Ces représentations (ou conceptions) préalables constituent autant de systèmes explicatifs à partir desquels nous structurons notre monde personnel, notre réalité des choses. Dans le cadre plus strict de l'école, un apprentissage n'est possible que si l'enseignant s'emploie, non pas à démanteler les représentations de ses élèves sur le concept qu'il a prévu d'enseigner, aussi "erronées" soient elles, mais tout d'abord à les repérer, puis à les faire évoluer pour mieux les faire fonctionner. C'est à cette condition que le "nouveau" savoir pourra prendre place dans la structure cognitive de l'élève sans en perturber l'équilibre. Les enseignants disposent de multiples moyens leur permettant de faire évoluer ces représentations. Parmi eux, les modèles explicatifs sont une option possible en ce sens qu'ils permettent, par une analogie simplifiée de la réalité, de mettre à la portée de jeunes élèves des phénomènes complexes, ceci dans le but de leur permettre d'en comprendre le fonctionnement. Mais certains des modèles utilisés par les enseignants de l'école primaire leur sont proposés avec un niveau de simplification et d'épuration tel, qu'ils contribuent à forger dans l'esprit de l'élèves de nouvelles représentations. Nous avons donc tenté, par la réalisation de ce Travail d'Etude et de Recherche, de vérifier l'hypothèse selon laquelle "l'utilisation par l'enseignant à l'école primaire de modèles explicatifs, dans l'objectif de faire évoluer les représentations des élèves relativement à un concept donné, contribue au contraire à forger dans leur esprit de nouvelles représentations qui, au lieu de leur permettre d'accéder à un niveau conceptuel supérieur, constituent de nouveaux obstacles épistémologiques qui seront d'autant plus difficiles à franchir qu'ils auront été enseignés par le maître".

En nous appuyant sur le système des activités professionnelles (Blin, 1997), nous avons considéré que représentations, pratiques et identités professionnelles sont étroitement liées et qu'elles interagissent. La scolarisation d'élèves à besoins éducatifs particuliers (EBEP) peut se révéler déstabilisante pour certains enseignants (Saunier et Toullec-Théry, 2017). Nous nous sommes demandé si les difficultés qu'ils rencontrent peuvent provenir d'un hiatus entre leurs représentations de l'élève idéal et les EBEP. Pour rendre compte des multiples influences qu'exercent ces représentations sur l'élaboration des pratiques et de l'identité professionnelle, nous avons construit le concept de rapport à l'élève idéal, en écho au rapport au savoir (Charlot, 1997). Notre méthodologie s'appuie sur des données quantitatives et qualitatives. Nous avons élaboré et diffusé un questionnaire pour recueillir des données sur l'élève idéal, puis nous avons mené des focus groupes afin de compléter et d'affiner notre analyse. Le traitement statistique des données quantitatives a débouché sur des typologies d'enseignants et sur la constitution d'un portrait de l'élève idéal. Les entretiens collectifs ont permis de comprendre les différentes fonctions que l'élève idéal occupe pour ces enseignants ainsi que les liens entre leurs représentations et la façon dont ils définissent leur métier et leurs pratiques. L'analyse des données a également fait apparaitre l'influence des normes et des valeurs institutionnelles sur leur construction identitaire professionnelle et leurs pratiques.

We have experienced a taste of this scenario in the U.S. in the last decade with the new emphasis on de-institutionalization, but Denise Jodelet takes us to an extraordinary community in France where the mentally ill have assumed a visible and prominent role for more than seventy years. The small French town of Ainay-le-Ch�teau and its environs are the site of a "family colony" for men, established in 1900. Here the patients ("lodgers") live with ordinary families ("foster parents"), hold jobs, and are free to move about the countryside. Jodelet's chronicle of daily life in the colony is made rich and vivid by extensive ethnographic material as she unravels a complex set of relationships, ultimately finding that while some of the barriers between the "other" and the larger society have been overcome, new ones have arisen in their place. This unique social experiment provides invaluable social and cultural insights, illuminating many fundamental issues in psychology, psychiatry, and sociology.
