Book excerpt: Linear Stochastic Control Systems presents a thorough description of the mathematical theory and fundamental principles of linear stochastic control systems. Both continuous-time and discrete-time systems are thoroughly covered. Reviews of the modern probability and random processes theories and the Itô stochastic differential equations are provided. Discrete-time stochastic systems theory, optimal estimation and Kalman filtering, and optimal stochastic control theory are studied in detail. A modern treatment of these same topics for continuous-time stochastic control systems is included. The text is written in an easy-to-understand style, and the reader needs only to have a background of elementary real analysis and linear deterministic systems theory to comprehend the subject matter. This graduate textbook is also suitable for self-study, professional training, and as a handy research reference. Linear Stochastic Control Systems is self-contained and provides a step-by-step development of the theory, with many illustrative examples, exercises, and engineering applications.

Book excerpt: Since its origins in the 1940s, the subject of decision making under uncertainty has grown into a diversified area with application in several branches of engineering and in those areas of the social sciences concerned with policy analysis and prescription. These approaches required a computing capacity too expensive for the time, until the ability to collect and process huge quantities of data engendered an explosion of work in the area. This book provides succinct and rigorous treatment of the foundations of stochastic control; a unified approach to filtering, estimation, prediction, and stochastic and adaptive control; and the conceptual framework necessary to understand current trends in stochastic control, data mining, machine learning, and robotics.

Book excerpt: "This volume is a textbook on linear control systems with an emphasis on stochastic optimal control with solution methods using spectral factorization in line with the original approach of N. Wiener. Continuous-time and discrete-time versions are presented in parallel.... Two appendices introduce functional analytic concepts and probability theory, and there are 77 references and an index. The chapters (except for the last two) end with problems.... [T]he book presents in a clear way important concepts of control theory and can be used for teaching." —Zentralblatt Math "This is a textbook intended for use in courses on linear control and filtering and estimation on (advanced) levels. Its major purpose is an introduction to both deterministic and stochastic control and estimation. Topics are treated in both continuous time and discrete time versions.... Each chapter involves problems and exercises, and the book is supplemented by appendices, where fundamentals on Hilbert and Banach spaces, operator theory, and measure theoretic probability may be found. The book will be very useful for students, but also for a variety of specialists interested in deterministic and stochastic control and filtering." —Applications of Mathematics "The strength of the book under review lies in the choice of specialized topics it contains, which may not be found in this form elsewhere. Also, the first half would make a good standard course in linear control." —Journal of the Indian Institute of Science

Book excerpt: This original work offers the most comprehensive and up-to-date treatment of the important subject of optimal linear estimation, which is encountered in many areas of engineering such as communications, control, and signal processing, and also in several other fields, e.g., econometrics and statistics. The book not only highlights the most significant contributions to this field during the 20th century, including the works of Wiener and Kalman, but it does so in an original and novel manner that paves the way for further developments. This book contains a large collection of problems that complement it and are an important part of piece, in addition to numerous sections that offer interesting historical accounts and insights. The book also includes several results that appear in print for the first time. FEATURES/BENEFITS Takes a geometric point of view. Emphasis on the numerically favored array forms of many algorithms. Emphasis on equivalence and duality concepts for the solution of several related problems in adaptive filtering, estimation, and control. These features are generally absent in most prior treatments, ostensibly on the grounds that they are too abstract and complicated. It is the authors' hope that these misconceptions will be dispelled by the presentation herein, and that the fundamental simplicity and power of these ideas will be more widely recognized and exploited. Among other things, these features already yielded new insights and new results for linear and nonlinear problems in areas such as adaptive filtering, quadratic control, and estimation, including the recent Hà theories.

Book excerpt: This book presents a treatise on the theory and modeling of second-order stationary processes, including an exposition on selected application areas that are important in the engineering and applied sciences. The foundational issues regarding stationary processes dealt with in the beginning of the book have a long history, starting in the 1940s with the work of Kolmogorov, Wiener, Cramér and his students, in particular Wold, and have since been refined and complemented by many others. Problems concerning the filtering and modeling of stationary random signals and systems have also been addressed and studied, fostered by the advent of modern digital computers, since the fundamental work of R.E. Kalman in the early 1960s. The book offers a unified and logically consistent view of the subject based on simple ideas from Hilbert space geometry and coordinate-free thinking. In this framework, the concepts of stochastic state space and state space modeling, based on the notion of the conditional independence of past and future flows of the relevant signals, are revealed to be fundamentally unifying ideas. The book, based on over 30 years of original research, represents a valuable contribution that will inform the fields of stochastic modeling, estimation, system identification, and time series analysis for decades to come. It also provides the mathematical tools needed to grasp and analyze the structures of algorithms in stochastic systems theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern control theory and in particular state space or state variable methods can be adapted to the description of many different systems because it depends strongly on physical modeling and physical intuition. The laws of physics are in the form of differential equations and for this reason, this book concentrates on system descriptions in this form. This means coupled systems of linear or nonlinear differential equations. The physical approach is emphasized in this book because it is most natural for complex systems. It also makes what would ordinarily be a difficult mathematical subject into one which can straightforwardly be understood intuitively and which deals with concepts which engineering and science students are already familiar. In this way it is easy to immediately apply the theory to the understanding and control of ordinary systems. Application engineers, working in industry, will also find this book interesting and useful for this reason. In line with the approach set forth above, the book first deals with the modeling of systems in state space form. Both transfer function and differential equation modeling methods are treated with many examples. Linearization is treated and explained first for very simple nonlinear systems and then more complex systems. Because computer control is so fundamental to modern applications, discrete time modeling of systems as difference equations is introduced immediately after the more intuitive differential equation models. The conversion of differential equation models to difference equations is also discussed at length, including transfer function formulations. A vital problem in modern control is how to treat noise in control systems. Nevertheless this question is rarely treated in many control system textbooks because it is considered to be too mathematical and too difficult in a second course on controls. In this textbook a simple physical approach is made to the description of noise and stochastic disturbances which is easy to understand and apply to common systems. This requires only a few fundamental statistical concepts which are given in a simple introduction which lead naturally to the fundamental noise propagation equation for dynamic systems, the Lyapunov equation. This equation is given and exemplified both in its continuous and discrete time versions. With the Lyapunov equation available to describe state noise propagation, it is a very small step to add the effect of measurements and measurement noise. This gives immediately the Riccati equation for optimal state estimators or Kalman filters. These important observers are derived and illustrated using simulations in terms which make them easy to understand and easy to apply to real systems. The use of LQR regulators with Kalman filters give LQG (Linear Quadratic Gaussian) regulators which are introduced at the end of the book. Another important subject which is introduced is the use of Kalman filters as parameter estimations for unknown parameters. The textbook is divided into 7 chapters, 5 appendices, a table of contents, a table of examples, extensive index and extensive list of references. Each chapter is provided with a summary of the main points covered and a set of problems relevant to the material in that chapter. Moreover each of the more advanced chapters (3 - 7) are provided with notes describing the history of the mathematical and technical problems which lead to the control theory presented in that chapter. Continuous time methods are the main focus in the book because these provide the most direct connection to physics. This physical foundation allows a logical presentation and gives a good intuitive feel for control system construction. Nevertheless strong attention is also given to discrete time systems. Very few proofs are included in the book but most of the important results are derived. This method of presentation makes the text very readable and gives a good foundation for reading more rigorous texts. A complete set of solutions is available for all of the problems in the text. In addition a set of longer exercises is available for use as Matlab/Simulink ‘laboratory exercises’ in connection with lectures. There is material of this kind for 12 such exercises and each exercise requires about 3 hours for its solution. Full written solutions of all these exercises are available.

Book excerpt: This book gathers the most essential results, including recent ones, on linear-quadratic optimal control problems, which represent an important aspect of stochastic control. It presents the results in the context of finite and infinite horizon problems, and discusses a number of new and interesting issues. Further, it precisely identifies, for the first time, the interconnections between three well-known, relevant issues – the existence of optimal controls, solvability of the optimality system, and solvability of the associated Riccati equation. Although the content is largely self-contained, readers should have a basic grasp of linear algebra, functional analysis and stochastic ordinary differential equations. The book is mainly intended for senior undergraduate and graduate students majoring in applied mathematics who are interested in stochastic control theory. However, it will also appeal to researchers in other related areas, such as engineering, management, finance/economics and the social sciences.

Book excerpt: Advanced Topics in Control and Estimation of State-Multiplicative Noisy Systems begins with an introduction and extensive literature survey. The text proceeds to cover the field of H∞ time-delay linear systems where the issues of stability and L2−gain are presented and solved for nominal and uncertain stochastic systems, via the input-output approach. It presents solutions to the problems of state-feedback, filtering, and measurement-feedback control for these systems, for both the continuous- and the discrete-time settings. In the continuous-time domain, the problems of reduced-order and preview tracking control are also presented and solved. The second part of the monograph concerns non-linear stochastic state- multiplicative systems and covers the issues of stability, control and estimation of the systems in the H∞ sense, for both continuous-time and discrete-time cases. The book also describes special topics such as stochastic switched systems with dwell time and peak-to-peak filtering of nonlinear stochastic systems. The reader is introduced to six practical engineering- oriented examples of noisy state-multiplicative control and filtering problems for linear and nonlinear systems. The book is rounded out by a three-part appendix containing stochastic tools necessary for a proper appreciation of the text: a basic introduction to stochastic control processes, aspects of linear matrix inequality optimization, and MATLAB codes for solving the L2-gain and state-feedback control problems of stochastic switched systems with dwell-time. Advanced Topics in Control and Estimation of State-Multiplicative Noisy Systems will be of interest to engineers engaged in control systems research and development, to graduate students specializing in stochastic control theory, and to applied mathematicians interested in control problems. The reader is expected to have some acquaintance with stochastic control theory and state-space-based optimal control theory and methods for linear and nonlinear systems.
