These codes break down when they are transmitted over channels with memory, which is in fact what real-world channels look like since errors often occur in bursts. Therefore, these systems employ interleaving to spread the errors so that the channel looks more or less memoryless (for the decoder) at the cost of added delay and complexity. In addition, they fail to exploit the memory of the channel which increases the capacity for a wide class of channels. On the other hand, most channels with memory do not have simple and mathematically tractable models, making the design of suitable channel codes more challenging and possibly not practical. Recently, a new model has been proposed known as the queue-based channel (QBC) which is simple enough for mathematical analysis and complex enough for modeling wireless fading channels. In this work, we examine the performance of linear block codes when transmitted over this channel. We break down our focus into two parts. First, we investigate the maximum likelihood decoding of binary linear block codes over the QBC. Since it is well known that for binary symmetric memoryless channels, maximum likelihood decoding reduces to minimum Hamming distance decoding, our objective here is to explore whether there exists a similar relation between these two decoding schemes when the channel does have memory. We give a partial answer for the case of perfect and quasi perfect codes. Next, we study Reed-Solomon (RS) codes and analyze their performance when transmitted over the QBC under the assumption of bounded distance decoding. In particular, we examine the two interleaving strategies encountered when dealing with non-binary codes over a binary input channel; namely, symbol interleaving and bit interleaving. We compare these two interleaving schemes analytically and show that symbol interleaving always outperforms bit interleaving. Non-interleaved Reed-Solomon codes are also covered. We derive some useful expressions pertaining to the calculation of the probability of codeword error. The performance of non-interleaved RS codes are compared to that of interleaved ones for the simplest scenario of the QBC which is the additive (first-order) Markov noise channel with non-negative noise correlation.

Book excerpt: We introduced nested search methods to design (n, k) block codes for arbitrary channels by optimizing an appropriate metric spectrum in each iteration. For a given k, the methods start with a good high rate code, say k/(k + 1), and successively design lower rate codes up to rate k/2[superscript]k corresponding to a Hadamard code. Using a full search for small binary codes we found that optimal or near-optimal codes of increasing length can be obtained in a nested manner by utilizing Hadamard matrix columns. The codes can be linear if the Hadamard matrix is linear and non-linear otherwise. The design methodology was extended to the generic complex codes by utilizing columns of newly derived or existing unitary codes. The inherent nested nature of the codes make them ideal for progressive transmission. Extensive comparisons to metric bounds and to previously designed codes show the optimality or near-optimality of the new codes, designed for the fading and the additive white Gaussian noise channel (AWGN). It was also shown that linear codes can be optimal or at least meeting the metric bounds; one example is the systematic pilot-based code of rate k/(k + 1) which was proved to meet the lower bound on the maximum cross-correlation. Further, the method was generalized such that good codes for arbitrary channels can be designed given the corresponding metric or the pairwise error probability. In synchronous multiple-access schemes it is common to use unitary block codes to transmit the multiple users' information, especially in the downlink. In this work we suggest the use of newly designed non-unitary block codes, resulting in increased throughput efficiency, while the performance is shown not to be substantially sacrificed. The non-unitary codes are again developed through suitable nested searches. In addition, new multiple-access codes are introduced that optimize certain criteria, such as the sum-rate capacity. Finally, the introduction of the asymptotically optimum convolutional codes for a given constraint length, reduces dramatically the search size for good convolutional codes of a certain asymptotic performance, and the consequences to coded code-division multiple access (CDMA) system design are highlighted.

This combination known as multi-carrier spread spectrum (MC-SS) benefits from the advantages of both systems and offers high flexibility, high spectral efficiency, simple detection strategies, narrow-band interference rejection capability, etc. The basic principle of this combination is straightforward: The spreading is performed as direct sequence spread spectrum (DS-SS) but instead of transmitting the chips over a single carrier, several sub-carriers are employed. The MC modulation and demodulation can easily be realized in the digital domain by performing IFFT and FFT operations. The separation of the users' signals can be performed in the code domain. MC-SS systems can perform the spreading in frequency direction, which allows for simple signal detection strategies. Since 1993, MC-SS has been deeply studied and new alternative solutions have been proposed. Meanwhile, deep system analysis and comparison with DS-CDMA have been performed that show the superiority of MC-CDMA.
