Book Synopsis Computational Aspects of Linear Control by : Claude Brezinski
Download or read book Computational Aspects of Linear Control written by Claude Brezinski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many devices (we say dynamical systems or simply systems) behave like black boxes: they receive an input, this input is transformed following some laws (usually a differential equation) and an output is observed. The problem is to regulate the input in order to control the output, that is for obtaining a desired output. Such a mechanism, where the input is modified according to the output measured, is called feedback. The study and design of such automatic processes is called control theory. As we will see, the term system embraces any device and control theory has a wide variety of applications in the real world. Control theory is an interdisci plinary domain at the junction of differential and difference equations, system theory and statistics. Moreover, the solution of a control problem involves many topics of numerical analysis and leads to many interesting computational problems: linear algebra (QR, SVD, projections, Schur complement, structured matrices, localization of eigenvalues, computation of the rank, Jordan normal form, Sylvester and other equations, systems of linear equations, regulariza tion, etc), root localization for polynomials, inversion of the Laplace transform, computation of the matrix exponential, approximation theory (orthogonal poly nomials, Pad6 approximation, continued fractions and linear fractional transfor mations), optimization, least squares, dynamic programming, etc. So, control theory is also a. good excuse for presenting various (sometimes unrelated) issues of numerical analysis and the procedures for their solution. This book is not a book on control.
Book Synopsis Lectures On Linear Algebra by : Donald S Passman
Download or read book Lectures On Linear Algebra written by Donald S Passman and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2022-03-16 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of the expanded notes from an upper level linear algebra course given some years ago by the author. Each section, or lecture, covers about a week's worth of material and includes a full set of exercises of interest. It should feel like a very readable series of lectures. The notes cover all the basics of linear algebra but from a mature point of view. The author starts by briefly discussing fields and uses those axioms to define and explain vector spaces. Then he carefully explores the relationship between linear transformations and matrices. Determinants are introduced as volume functions and as a way to determine whether vectors are linearly independent. Also included is a full chapter on bilinear forms and a brief chapter on infinite dimensional spaces. The book is very well written, with numerous examples and exercises. It includes proofs and techniques that the author has developed over the years to make the material easier to understand and to compute.
Book Synopsis Linear and Nonlinear Circuits: Basic and Advanced Concepts by : Mauro Parodi
Download or read book Linear and Nonlinear Circuits: Basic and Advanced Concepts written by Mauro Parodi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-03 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides readers with the necessary background information and advanced concepts in the field of circuits, at the crossroads between physics, mathematics and system theory. It covers various engineering subfields, such as electrical devices and circuits, and their electronic counterparts. Based on the idea that a modern university course should provide students with conceptual tools to understand the behavior of both linear and nonlinear circuits, to approach current problems posed by new, cutting-edge devices and to address future developments and challenges, the book places equal emphasis on linear and nonlinear, two‐terminal and multi‐terminal, as well as active and passive circuit components. This second volume focuses on dynamical circuits, which are characterized by time evolution and by the concept of state. The content is divided into a set of introductory and a set of advanced‐level topics, mirroring the approach used in the previously published volume. Whenever possible, circuits are compared to physical systems of different natures (e.g. mechanical or biological) that exhibit the same dynamical behavior. The book also features a wealth of examples and numerous solved problems. Further topics, such as a more general framing of linear and nonlinear components, will be discussed in volume 3.
Book Synopsis Linear Programming and Economic Analysis by : Robert Dorfman
Download or read book Linear Programming and Economic Analysis written by Robert Dorfman and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2012-10-10 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed primarily for economists and those interested in management economics who are not necessarily accomplished mathematicians, this text offers a clear, concise exposition of the relationship of linear programming to standard economic analysis. The research and writing were supported by The RAND Corporation in the late 1950s. Linear programming has been one of the most important postwar developments in economic theory, but until publication of the present volume, no text offered a comprehensive treatment of the many facets of the relationship of linear programming to traditional economic theory. This book was the first to provide a wide-ranging survey of such important aspects of the topic as the interrelations between the celebrated von Neumann theory of games and linear programming, and the relationship between game theory and the traditional economic theories of duopoly and bilateral monopoly. Modern economists will especially appreciate the treatment of the connection between linear programming and modern welfare economics and the insights that linear programming gives into the determinateness of Walrasian equilibrium. The book also offers an excellent introduction to the important Leontief theory of input-output as well as extensive treatment of the problems of dynamic linear programming. Successfully used for three decades in graduate economics courses, this book stresses practical problems and specifies important concrete applications.

Book Synopsis Linear Algebra by : Fernando Barrera-Mora
Download or read book Linear Algebra written by Fernando Barrera-Mora and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-05-08 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are numerous linear algebra textbooks available on the market. Yet, there are few that approach the notion of eigenvectors and eigenvalues across an operator's minimum polynomial. In this book, we take that approach. This book provides a thorough introduction to the fundamental concepts of linear algebra. The material is divided into two sections: Part I covers fundamental concepts in linear algebra, whereas Part II covers the theory of determinants, the theory of eigenvalues and eigenvectors, and fundamental results on Euclidean vector spaces. We highlight that: Consider hypothetical manufacturing models as a starting point for studying linear equations. There are two novel ideas in the book: the use of a production model to motivate the concept of matrix product and the use of an operator's minimal polynomial to describe the theory of eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Several examples incorporate the use of SageMath., allowing the reader to focus on conceptual comprehension rather than formulas.
Book Synopsis The Origin of Life by : Raymond Aron
Download or read book The Origin of Life written by Raymond Aron and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical biology is still in its early stages as an academic discipline. There is even little agreement as to what topics it should deal with or in what manner it should precede; and it is only recently that philosophers felt called upon to notice the relevance of biological topics as evolution or perception to their traditional problems. This work is a publication of the International Union of Biological Sciences, the central organization of all the branches of biology. The main focus here is to explore the possibility of formulating some frame of concepts and methods around which theoretical biology can grow. The intention of this collective effort was that discussions would be concerned, not with the theory of particular biological processes, such as membrane permeability, genetics, and neural activity, but rather with an attempt to discover and formulate general concepts and logical relations characteristic of living as contrasted with inorganic systems. Further, this project is a consideration of implications these might have for general philosophy. Many well-known scientists contributed to this volume, such as J. Maynard Smith, Ernst Mayr, Brian Goodwin, and Renu Thom. The Origin of Life: Toward a Theoretical Biology explores the character of the problems facing any theory of general biology. It contains a series of chapters and exchanges discussing such topics as the origin of life, cellular differentiation, morphogensis, evolution, and indeterminacy in biological and physical systems, the organization of the brain, the statistical mechanics of non-linear oscillators, and many other topics. This is a pioneering volume by recognized leaders in an emerging field the first of four such works.
Book Synopsis Advanced Linear Algebra by : Nicholas A. Loehr
Download or read book Advanced Linear Algebra written by Nicholas A. Loehr and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-06-21 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in linear or abstract algebra, Advanced Linear Algebra covers theoretical aspects of the subject, along with examples, computations, and proofs. It explores a variety of advanced topics in linear algebra that highlight the rich interconnections of the subject to geometry, algebra, analysis, combinatorics, numerical computation, and many other areas of mathematics. The author begins with chapters introducing basic notation for vector spaces, permutations, polynomials, and other algebraic structures. The following chapters are designed to be mostly independent of each other so that readers with different interests can jump directly to the topic they want. This is an unusual organization compared to many abstract algebra textbooks, which require readers to follow the order of chapters. Each chapter consists of a mathematical vignette devoted to the development of one specific topic. Some chapters look at introductory material from a sophisticated or abstract viewpoint, while others provide elementary expositions of more theoretical concepts. Several chapters offer unusual perspectives or novel treatments of standard results. A wide array of topics is included, ranging from concrete matrix theory (basic matrix computations, determinants, normal matrices, canonical forms, matrix factorizations, and numerical algorithms) to more abstract linear algebra (modules, Hilbert spaces, dual vector spaces, bilinear forms, principal ideal domains, universal mapping properties, and multilinear algebra). The book provides a bridge from elementary computational linear algebra to more advanced, abstract aspects of linear algebra needed in many areas of pure and applied mathematics.

Book Synopsis Strategic Allocation of Resources Using Linear Programming Model with Parametric Analysis: in MATLAB and Excel Solver by : Dinesh Gupta
Download or read book Strategic Allocation of Resources Using Linear Programming Model with Parametric Analysis: in MATLAB and Excel Solver written by Dinesh Gupta and published by Anchor Academic Publishing (aap_verlag). This book was released on 2014-05-27 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the late 1940s, linear programming models have been used for many different purposes. Airline companies apply these models to optimize their use of planes and staff. NASA has been using them for many years to optimize their use of limited resources. Oil companies use them to optimize their refinery operations. Small and medium-sized businesses use linear programming to solve a huge variety of problems, often involving resource allocation. In my study, a typical product-mix problem in a manufacturing system producing two products (each product consists of two sub-assemblies) is solved for its optimal solution through the use of the latest versions of MATLAB having the command simlp, which is very much like linprog. As analysts, we try to find a good enough solution for the decision maker to make a final decision. Our attempt is to give the mathematical description of the product-mix optimization problem and bring the problem into a form ready to call MATLAB’s simlp command. The objective of this study is to find the best product mix that maximizes profit. The graph obtained using MATLAB commands, give the shaded area enclosed by the constraints called the feasible region, which is the set of points satisfying all the constraints. To find the optimal solution we look at the lines of equal profit to find the corner of the feasible region which yield the highest profit. This corner can be found out at the farthest line of equal profit, which still touches the feasible region. The most critical part is the sensitivity analysis, using Excel Solver, and Parametric Analysis, using computer software, which allows us to study the effect on optimal solution due to discrete and continuous change in parameters of the LP model including to identify bottlenecks. We have examined other options like product outsourcing, one-time cost, cross training of one operator, manufacturing of hypothetical third product on under-utilized machines and optimal sequencing of jobs on machines.
