In the sincere desire, therefore, to bring order out of chaos and to determine whether perchance there may be two grains of wheat hid in two bushels of chaff, I propose to examine the question from every possible point of view. To this end I shall present all available source material, call attention to the leading versions of the pardon story, and re view the late controversy in its various phases. In brief, I propose to examine everything and suppress nothing which tends to throw light on the subject.
