Book excerpt: Cultural critic Fredric Jameson, renowned for his incisive studies of the passage of modernism to postmodernism, returns to the movement that dramatically broke with all tradition in search of progress for the first time since his acclaimed A Singular Modernity . The Modernist Papers is a tour de froce of anlysis and criticism, in which Jameson brings his dynamic and acute thought to bear on the modernist literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Jameson discusses modernist poetics, including intensive discussions of the work of Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Mallarmé, Wallace Stevens, Joyce, Proust, and Thomas Mann. He explores the peculiarties of the American literary field, taking in William Carlos Williams and the American epic, and examines the language theories of Gertrude Stein. Refusing to see modernism as simply a Western phenomenon he also pays close attention to its Japanese expression; while the complexities of a late modernist representation of twentieth-century politics are articulated in a concluding section on Peter Weiss’s novel The Aesthetics of Resistance. Challenging our previous understanding of the literature of this pperiod, this monumental work will come to be regarded as the classic study of modernism.

Ignoring the way he still makes her feel is a losing battle. Saying yes when he throws her a lifeline that will mean living and working closer to him? That would be crazy... Noah Taylor has spent the last decade living life to the fullest. As drummer for Fractured, he's got everything he could ever want. But seeing Summer again reminds him of a time when she had been everything he wanted. That was until she'd made a decision that had torn his heart to shreds. He shouldn't care that her life has imploded. He shouldn't try to help her. And he definitely shouldn't start remembering how good they used to be together... Their chemistry might be undeniable, but second chances don't come easy. After all, shattered hearts can be mended, but trust, once broken, might just stay broken forever. Please be aware that Fractured Trust contains very brief mention of past infertility issues and brief mention of past miscarriage. If these are sensitive issues for you, please read with caution. Book excerpt: A journalist’s access to the music icon gives this account an “authenticity that sets the book apart from other biographies about the man and the legend” (Steve Richards, The Independent). The man who introduced reggae to a worldwide audience, Bob Marley was a hero figure in the classic, mythological sense. From humble beginnings, with talent and religious belief his only weapons, the Jamaican recording artist applied himself with unstinting perseverance to spreading his prophetic musical message across the globe. In 1980, on tour, Bob Marley and the Wailers played to the largest audiences a musical act had ever experienced in Europe. Less than a year later, Marley would die, only thirty-six years old. Sales of Marley’s albums before his death were spectacular; in the years since he died, they have been phenomenal. Chris Salewicz interviewed Bob Marley in Jamaica in 1979. Now, for the first time, in this thorough, detailed account of Marley’s life and the world in which he grew up and which he came to dominate, Salewicz brings to life not only the Rastafari religion and the musical scene in Jamaica, but also the spirit of the man himself. Interviews with dozens of people who knew Marley and have never spoken before are woven through the narrative as Salewicz seeks to explain why Marley has become such an enigmatic and heroic figure, loved by millions all over the world. “As gritty, entertaining, and starry-eyed as Marley himself.” —Publishers Weekly “The definitive account of the man and the myth.” —Steve Richards, The Independent “[Salewicz] invades and illuminates Marley’s privacy more effectively than previous biographers.” —Robert Sandall, The Sunday Times (London)

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK • An exhilarating, often deliciously funny and "beautifully written voyage of discovery" (Chicago Tribune) that is at once a travelogue, a social history, and a love letter to America. • From the bestselling, award-winning author of Bad Land In 1782 an immigrant with the high-toned name J. Hector St. John de Crèvecoeur—"Heartbreak" in English—wrote a pioneering account of one European's transformation into an American. Some two hundred years later Jonathan Raban, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award, arrived in Crèvecoeur's wake to see how America has paid off for succeeding generations of newcomers. In the course of Hunting Mr. Heartbreak, Raban passes for homeless in New York and tries to pass for a good ol' boy in Alabama (which entails "renting" an elderly black lab). He sees the Protestant work ethic perfected by Korean immigrants in Seattle—one of whom celebrates her new home as "So big! So green! So wide-wide-wide!"—and repudiated by the lowlife of Key West. And on every page of this peerlessly observant work, Raban makes us experience America with wonder, humor, and an unblinking eye for its contradictions.
