Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report on a search for flavor-changing neutral current decays of B mesons into [mu][mu]K[sup [plus-minus]] using data obtained in the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) 1992--1993 data taking run. To reduce the amount of background in our data we use precise tracking information from the CDF silicon vertex detector to pinpoint the location of the decay vertex of the B candidate, and accept only events which have a large decay time. We compare this data to a B meson signal obtained in a similar fashion, but where the muon pears originate from [psi] decays, and calculate the relative branching ratios. In absence of any indication of flavor-changing neutral current decay we set an upper limit on the branching ratio of 3.2 [times] 10[sup [minus]1], which is consistent with Standard Model expectations but leaves little room for non-standard physics.

Book Synopsis Random Walks and Electric Networks by : Peter G. Doyle
Download or read book Random Walks and Electric Networks written by Peter G. Doyle and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1984-12-31 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probability theory, like much of mathematics, is indebted to physics as a source of problems and intuition for solving these problems. Unfortunately, the level of abstraction of current mathematics often makes it difficult for anyone but an expert to appreciate this fact. Random Walks and electric networks looks at the interplay of physics and mathematics in terms of an example—the relation between elementary electric network theory and random walks —where the mathematics involved is at the college level.
Book Synopsis An Introduction to Probabilistic Number Theory by : Emmanuel Kowalski
Download or read book An Introduction to Probabilistic Number Theory written by Emmanuel Kowalski and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-05-06 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its seemingly deterministic nature, the study of whole numbers, especially prime numbers, has many interactions with probability theory, the theory of random processes and events. This surprising connection was first discovered around 1920, but in recent years the links have become much deeper and better understood. Aimed at beginning graduate students, this textbook is the first to explain some of the most modern parts of the story. Such topics include the Chebychev bias, universality of the Riemann zeta function, exponential sums and the bewitching shapes known as Kloosterman paths. Emphasis is given throughout to probabilistic ideas in the arguments, not just the final statements, and the focus is on key examples over technicalities. The book develops probabilistic number theory from scratch, with short appendices summarizing the most important background results from number theory, analysis and probability, making it a readable and incisive introduction to this beautiful area of mathematics.

Download or read book Analysis I written by Terence Tao and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-29 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is part one of a two-volume book on real analysis and is intended for senior undergraduate students of mathematics who have already been exposed to calculus. The emphasis is on rigour and foundations of analysis. Beginning with the construction of the number systems and set theory, the book discusses the basics of analysis (limits, series, continuity, differentiation, Riemann integration), through to power series, several variable calculus and Fourier analysis, and then finally the Lebesgue integral. These are almost entirely set in the concrete setting of the real line and Euclidean spaces, although there is some material on abstract metric and topological spaces. The book also has appendices on mathematical logic and the decimal system. The entire text (omitting some less central topics) can be taught in two quarters of 25–30 lectures each. The course material is deeply intertwined with the exercises, as it is intended that the student actively learn the material (and practice thinking and writing rigorously) by proving several of the key results in the theory.
Book Synopsis Preparing for the Worst by : Hrishikesh (Rick) D. Vinod
Download or read book Preparing for the Worst written by Hrishikesh (Rick) D. Vinod and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2004-11-11 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A timely approach to downside risk and its role in stock market investments When dealing with the topic of risk analysis, most books on investments treat downside and upside risk equally. Preparing for the Worst takes an entirely novel approach by focusing on downside risk and explaining how to incorporate it into investment decisions. Highlighting this asymmetry of the stock market, the authors describe how existing theories miss the downside and follow with explanations of how it can be included. Various techniques for calculating downside risk are demonstrated. This book presents the latest ideas in the field from the ground up, making the discussion accessible to mathematicians and statisticians interested in applications in finance, as well as to finance professionals who may not have a mathematical background. An invaluable resource for anyone wishing to explore the critical issues of finance, portfolio management, and securities pricing, this book: Incorporates Value at Risk into the theoretical discussion Uses many examples to illustrate downside risk in U.S., international, and emerging market investments Addresses downside risk arising from fraud and corruption Includes step-by-step instructions on how to implement the methods introduced in this book Offers advice on how to avoid pitfalls in calculations and computer programming Provides software use information and tips
Book Synopsis Partial Differential Equations and Mathematical Physics by : Lars Hörmander
Download or read book Partial Differential Equations and Mathematical Physics written by Lars Hörmander and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 17-19 and May 19-21,1995, analysis seminars were organized jointly at the universities of Copenhagen and Lund, under the heading "Danish-Swedish Analysis Seminar". The main topic was partial differen tial equations and related problems of mathematical physics. The lectures given are presented in this volume, some as short abstracts and some as quite complete expositions or survey papers. They span over a large vari ety of topics. The most frequently occurring theme is the use of microlocal analysis which is now important also in the study of non-linear differential equations although it originated entirely within the linear theory. Perhaps it is less surprising that microlocal analysis has proved to be useful in the study of mathematical problems of classical quantum mechanics, for it re ceived a substantial input of ideas from that field. The scientific committee for the invitation of speakers consisted of Gerd Grubb in Copenhagen, Lars Hormander and Anders MeHn in Lund, and Jo hannes Sjostrand in Paris. Lars Hormander and Anders Melin have edited the proceedings. They were hosts of the seminar days in Lund while Gerd Grubb was the host in Copenhagen. Financial support was obtained from the mathematics departments in Copenhagen and Lund, CNRS in France, the Danish and Swedish Na tional Research Councils, Gustaf Sigurd Magnuson's foundation at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, and the Wenner-Gren foundation in Stockholm. We want to thank all these organisations for their support

Book Synopsis The Mathematics of Voting and Elections: A Hands-On Approach by : Jonathan K. Hodge
Download or read book The Mathematics of Voting and Elections: A Hands-On Approach written by Jonathan K. Hodge and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mathematics of Voting and Elections: A Hands-On Approach, Second Edition, is an inquiry-based approach to the mathematics of politics and social choice. The aim of the book is to give readers who might not normally choose to engage with mathematics recreationally the chance to discover some interesting mathematical ideas from within a familiar context, and to see the applicability of mathematics to real-world situations. Through this process, readers should improve their critical thinking and problem solving skills, as well as broaden their views of what mathematics really is and how it can be used in unexpected ways. The book was written specifically for non-mathematical audiences and requires virtually no mathematical prerequisites beyond basic arithmetic. At the same time, the questions included are designed to challenge both mathematical and non-mathematical audiences alike. More than giving the right answers, this book asks the right questions. The book is fun to read, with examples that are not just thought-provoking, but also entertaining. It is written in a style that is casual without being condescending. But the discovery-based approach of the book also forces readers to play an active role in their learning, which should lead to a sense of ownership of the main ideas in the book. And while the book provides answers to some of the important questions in the field of mathematical voting theory, it also leads readers to discover new questions and ways to approach them. In addition to making small improvements in all the chapters, this second edition contains several new chapters. Of particular interest might be Chapter 12 which covers a host of topics related to gerrymandering.

Book Synopsis Fertilization of Dryland and Irrigated Soils by : J. Hagin
Download or read book Fertilization of Dryland and Irrigated Soils written by J. Hagin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been learned about the proper and judicious use of fertilizers. Fertilizer application by farmers has grown from an art to a science. As food producers have strived to increase crop yields by overcoming nutrient deficiencies the use of fertil izers has increased dramatically. This has created a large chemical industry capable of supplying the needed plant food elements. A more complete understanding of soil chemistry and plant nutrition has led to greater fertilizer use with improved fertilization methods and crop cultural practices. Improved fertilizer technology has led to the production of more efficient forms of fertilizer. The modem fertilizer industry and with it fertilization practices began in the humid countries of the world. The use of fertilizers in arid and semiarid regions was later in development, although agriculture had its beginning in semiarid and arid regions. The development offertilizer use is parallel to industrial development in various areas of the world.
Book Synopsis Reshaping Urban Conservation by : Ana Pereira Roders
Download or read book Reshaping Urban Conservation written by Ana Pereira Roders and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-07 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the implementation of the 2011 UNESCO Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL approach), designed to foster the integration of heritage management in regional and urban planning and management, and strengthen the role of heritage in sustainable urban development.Earlier publications and research looked at the underlying theory of why the HUL approach was needed and how this theory was developed and elaborated by UNESCO. A comprehensive analysis was carried out in consultation with a multitude of actors in the twenty-first-century urban scene and with disciplinary approaches that are available to heritage managers and practitioners to implement the HUL approach. This volume aims to be empirical, describing, analyzing, and comparing 28 cities taken as case studies to implement the HUL approach. From those cases, many lessons can be learned and much guidance shared on best practices concerning what can be done to make the HUL approach work.Whereas the previous studies served to illustrate issues and challenges, in this volume the studies point to innovations in regional and urban planning and management that can allow cities to avoid major conflicts and to further develop in competitiveness. These accomplishments have been possible by building partnerships, devising financial strategies, and using heritage as a key resource in sustainable urban development, to name but a few effective strategies. For these reasons, this volume is primarily pragmatic, linked to the daily work and challenges of practitioners and administrators, using specific cases to assess what was and is good about current practices and what can be improved, in accordance with the HUL approach and aims.
