Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea for this book of limericks came about pretty much out of nowhere one day while lunching with several good "buddies." Thanks Carl, Ed, Richard, et al.! We all had reminiscences about life in general and our experiences growing up and in our work. I was surprised how often my memories came out in a rhyme. Throughout the course of writing these limericks, I found that many of them popped into my head at bedtime or upon rising in the morning. They cover all aspects of life, both humorous and words to live by. It is my hope that they will provide humor to some and inspiration to others. One note of caution, the first names used in my limericks are not meant to reflect upon any family member or acquaintance. I dedicate this book to my "big sister," Loma; my mother, who passed away in 1999, and several siblings (and cousin Garth) who, in one way or another, prompted me to publish this book.

Written under the spell of a medieval Welsh poetic form, the poems in Anthony Madrid's incantatory second book, TRY NEVER, each offer up their own strange world. They're full of erudition, humor, and rare magnificence. A single poem can contain "bottles and cans," Mount Everest, an upset stomach, Texas rain, a hawk, the evil queen, a "twice- mended lid," and Ralph; as if to say, anything's possible.

Book excerpt: In the moral vacuum and world of shifting values following World War I, Aldous Huxley was both a sensitive refl ector and an articulate catalyst. This work provides a highly illuminating analysis of Huxley's evolution from skeptic to mystic. As Milton Birnbaum shows, in a perceptive interpretation of Huxley's poetry, fi ction, essays and biographies-what evolved in Huxley's moral and intellectual pilgrimage was not so much a change in direction as a shift in emphasis. Even in the sardonic Huxley of the 1920s and 1930s, there is a moral concern. In the later Huxley, there are traces of the satirical skepticism which delighted his readers in the decades preceding World War II. A man of letters, a keen observer, seeker of new ways while profoundly knowledgeable in the truths of ancient wisdom, Huxley tried to achieve a symbiotic synthesis of the best of all worlds. In clarifying and interpreting Huxley's intellectual, moral, and philosophical development, Birnbaum touches upon all the subjects that came under the scrutiny of a singularly encyclopedic mind. This book is of great worth to those interested both in Huxley the brilliant satirist and in Huxley the seeker of salvation. In his search, Huxley typifi ed the modern quest for values. Milton Birnbaum's study is an invaluable guide in that journey. His new introduction takes account of research and analysis of Huxley that has occurred since this book's original publication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the ‘Land of Song and Literature’ that is Wales, what could be more natural than writing music and poetry? So this book is a collection of song lyrics and limericks. It is primarily a light-hearted look at the worlds of song writing and poetry. But it is much more than that. It is also a patchwork quilt of interviews, autobiography and mythology. Each lyric and set of limericks is preceded by prose, related (sometimes tenuously) to the reason for writing the verse. The lyrics were not written as poems, they are verses divorced from their musical settings. Are song lyrics poetry? This is a theme which runs through the book. Nine authors and songwriters were asked this question. The list of those who contributed is like a ‘Who’s Who’ of Welsh music and poetry. Dannie Abse, Steve Balsamo, Peter Finch, Ron Griffiths, Paul Henry, Gwyneth Lewis, Robert Minhinnick, Mal Pope and solitary Scot Al Stewart. Their answers to this and other questions make fascinating reading. There is also a previously unpublished short poem from Robert Minhinnick and a two line verse from Paul Henry. What was their conclusion? Are song lyrics the same as poetry? For the answers be sure to read the entertaining ‘Lyrics and Limericks’. Book reviews online: PublishedBestsellers website.

Book excerpt: Radio personality and author Garrison Keillor delights and astounds in this hybrid memoir/poetry collection that combines anecdotes from his childhood and his "A Prairie Home Companion" years with literary limericks, darkly humorous limericks, extended limericks (aka limericks with porches), and so much more. Limericks are the poems that can be written in the empty spaces between life, Keillor posits, and this compact book illustrates the full range of the form's utility: thank-you notes to doctors, odes to "Prairie Home" performers, postcard greetings from exotic places, succinct biographies of favorite writers, and scribbles in the margins of Sunday church programs. Readers who have always pined for the perfect limerick hinging on the place name "Schenectady" will at long last be placated. Meanwhile, longtime Keillor fans will gain insight into a whole new side of the bestselling author, whose obsession with limericks goes all the way back to when the bespectacled, lanky youth wearing hand-me-down jeans (from his sister) recited to his Anoka High School class: There was a young man of Anoka Who tried to write a great limerick. He tried and he tried And some were not bad, But something seemed to be missing.

Book excerpt: Called "the flour of Cities all," London has long been understood through the poetry it has inspired. Now poet Mark Ford has assembled the most capacious and wide-ranging anthology of poems about London to date, from Chaucer to Wordsworth to the present day, providing a chronological tour of urban life and of English literature. Nearly all of the major poets of British literature have left some poetic record of London: Chaucer, Spenser, Shakespeare, Donne, Milton, Dryden, Pope, Johnson, Wordsworth, Keats, Byron, and T. S. Eliot. Ford goes well beyond these figures, however, to gather significant verse of all kinds, from Jacobean city comedies to nursery rhymes, from topical satire to anonymous ballads. The result is a cultural history of the city in verse, one that represents all classes of London's population over some seven centuries, mingling the high and low, the elegant and the salacious, the courtly and the street smart. Many of the poems respond to large events in the city's history--the beheading of Charles I, the Great Fire, the Blitz--but the majority reflect the quieter routines and anxieties of everyday life through the centuries. Ford's selections are arranged chronologically, thus preserving a sense of the strata of the capital's history. An introductory essay by the poet explores in detail the cultural, political, and aesthetic significance of the verse inspired by this great city. The result is a volume as rich and vibrant and diverse as London itself.

Book excerpt: This book encourages health professionals to reconceptualise their practice in the light of the fact that their patients are deteriorating and dying, supporting them in their dichotomous role which involves affirming that person's life whilst acknowledging that that life is ending. Professionals are encouraged to think laterally, to be creative in their use of their core skills, and to use their life skills and experience to change the focus of their interventions. By making these changes, those involved with caring for the dying will be able to address issues related to burnout and feeling de-skilled. The authors share their considerable experience with the reader - what works for both patient and carer/professional when working in this field. By providing workable solutions, they empower those in disempowering situations, such as when working with terminally ill children and adults. The book is truly holistic and client-centred in its approach, upholding the philosophy of palliative care. Aimed at all who interact with children and adults who have a life-limiting condition or who are dying Offers practical examples of approaches to dilemmas and emotional issues commonly face by those working in palliative care Encourages professionals to think laterally, to be creative in their use of core skills, and to use their life skills and experience to change the focus of their interventions Moves the emphasis away from the medical model to the emotional and spiritual influences on quality of life Offers clear, workable guidelines and demonstrates practical solutions, based on proven theory and experience, to problems encountered on a day-to-day basis by patients and those coming into contact with them

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is really my fathers book. Dad was a great fan of Edward Lear, constantly reciting the Nonsense Poems throughout my childhood. He asked me, when I was a teenager, to quote the first line of a Lear limerick. Without reading the rest of the verse, Dad composed his own version using Lears first line and he continued until he had rewritten all hundred and nine limericks, bringing them into the twentieth century. If this little book amuses and delights even a few people, I think Dad would be pleased. His motto in life was to put more into this world than he took out of it. I have tried, out of love for him, to enable him to leave a little more in this world. Barbara Whitehead (nee Lowe)
