Book Synopsis The Death of the Mannikin by : Art Weldy
Download or read book The Death of the Mannikin written by Art Weldy and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mannikin who washes ashore one morning in Atlantic City has red hair, a painted face, and the word Pengo stamped on her bum. It brings together two spectators: a seventy-five-year-old highly sophisticated widow of a naval officer who feeds feral cats and a retired Pittsburgh cop, just a guy from the gritty Lawrenceville district of Pittsburgh, working part-time for the coroner. The appearance of a real redheaded young woman washing up on the same location days later bonds these two older people who live in the present and plan for the future. They begin a private investigation of their own and experience a budding romance. One wonders, Arent they too old for that? Tom has a wife back home by the way, suffering from Alzheimers disease. Their snooping introduces us to an assortment of suspects ranging from members of a rock band to a badly wounded Korean War vet, as well as two gangsters from Newark. Locales range from Carnegie Street in Pittsburgh to Reading Market in Philly and Peacock Alley in the Waldorf, and lead us through many streets and attractions with Monopoly Board names. Lest the readers think this is a sad, dark story, its unexpectedly upbeat and humorous. Lillian and Tom eventually connect the dots that mark the rise and fall of a young woman exposed to the ugly undercurrents of life in Century 21. The very unlikely and unexpected murderer is uncovered, and the mystery is solved (or is it?) by two senior citizens who firmly believe that life is full of new beginnings.

Download or read book Holy Hell written by Elizabeth Sims and published by . This book was released on 2014-12-29 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lillian Byrd is a small-time reporter with a flair for making big-time mistakes-like getting fired for fending off the boss's son with an X-Acto knife and breaking up with her girlfriend for no good reason-so her investigation into the disappearances of women in the Detroit area might not be the best idea. But when one of the missing women turns up dead and Lillian recognizes the bizarrely mutilated corpse, she's in too deep to get out. Of course, it doesn't help that she's still fighting off the boss's son and ducking the intensely aggressive amorous overtures of the roughest dyke in town. Now, after simultaneously blowing the case for the police and revealing herself to the off-kilter killers, she's completely on her own. Can she catch the murderers before they catch up with her? "In the wisecracking tradition of Janet Evanovich, Elizabeth Sims brings us a delightfully down-to-earth character in Lillian Byrd, a woman who refuses to take herself too seriously, even in the face of serious threats of grievous bodily harm. Sims's tight plot, delicious irony, crisp dialogue, and colorful cast make Holy Hell not only an impressive first novel, but an honest-to-God page-turner." -Lauren Maddison, author of Deceptions and Witchfire
Book Synopsis Sculpting Lillian by : Iris Pachler PhD
Download or read book Sculpting Lillian written by Iris Pachler PhD and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-07-29 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since her divorce, people in Lillians life have said such things as Be happy its over, Now you dont have to put up with him anymore, Enjoy being single, I wish I had that type of freedom. Lillian wants to punch these people, as all of these words are bullshit, they dont describe her experience at all. She thought it would be just like any other relationship breakup she had experienced in the past, with the usual feelings of anger, sadness, even heartbreak, eventually simply being able to let go and move on. But here she is, feeling what can best be described as disorientation. Yes, there are commonalities to a relationship breakup, especially a long-term relationship, but she is much more confused than she had ever been, doesnt know who she is anymore, why she chose this person in the first place, how to be single when she was sure she would spend the rest of her life with the same person. Considering this confusion, Lillians post-divorce journey includes casual sex-dates, followed by more confusion, digging into her past and childhood for answers, and eventually the decision to attempt healing. Lillian has to find herself, understand her motivations, triggers, fears, insecurities. In short, this process is one, big, fat shit storm. Pride and pretences have to be left behind for Lillian to get in touch with her authentic, messy, and complicated self.

Book Synopsis Selected Letters of Norman Mailer by : Norman Mailer
Download or read book Selected Letters of Norman Mailer written by Norman Mailer and published by Random House. This book was released on 2014-12-02 with total page 1032 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A genuine literary event—an illuminating collection of correspondence from one of the most acclaimed American writers of all time Over the course of a nearly sixty-year career, Norman Mailer wrote more than 30 novels, essay collections, and nonfiction books. Yet nowhere was he more prolific—or more exposed—than in his letters. All told, Mailer crafted more than 45,000 pieces of correspondence (approximately 20 million words), many of them deeply personal, keeping a copy of almost every one. Now the best of these are published—most for the first time—in one remarkable volume that spans seven decades and, it seems, several lifetimes. Together they form a stunning autobiographical portrait of one of the most original, provocative, and outspoken public intellectuals of the twentieth century. Compiled by Mailer’s authorized biographer, J. Michael Lennon, and organized by decade, Selected Letters of Norman Mailer features the most fascinating of Mailer’s missives from 1940 to 2007—letters to his family and friends, to fans and fellow writers (including Truman Capote, James Baldwin, and Philip Roth), to political figures from Henry Kissinger to Bill and Hillary Clinton, and to such cultural icons as John Lennon, Marlon Brando, and even Monica Lewinsky. Here is Mailer the precocious Harvard undergraduate, writing home to his parents for the first time and worrying that his acceptances by literary magazines were “all happening too easy.” Here, too, is Mailer the soldier, confronting the violence of war in the Pacific, which would become the subject of his masterly debut novel, The Naked and the Dead: “[I’m] amazed how casually it fits into . . . daily life, how very unhorrible it all is.” Mailer the international celebrity pledges to William Styron, “I’m going to write every day, and like Lot’s Wife I’m consigning myself to a pillar of salt if I dare to look back,” while the 1980s Mailer agonizes over the fallout from his ill-fated friendship with Jack Henry Abbott, the murderer who became his literary protégé. (“The continuation of our relationship was depressing for both of us,” he confesses to Joyce Carol Oates.) At last, he finds domestic—and erotic—bliss in the arms of his sixth wife, Norris Church (“We bounce into each other like sunlight”). Whether he is reflecting on the Kennedy assassination, assessing the merits of authors from Fitzgerald to Proust, or threatening to pummel William Styron, the brilliant, pugnacious Norman Mailer comes alive again in these letters. The myriad faces of this artist and activist, lover and fighter, public figure and private man, are laid bare in this collection as never before. Praise for Selected Letters of Norman Mailer “Extraordinary.”—Vanity Fair “As massive as the life they document . . . the autobiography [Mailer] never wrote . . . a kind of map, from the hills and rice paddies of the Philippines through every victory and defeat for the rest of the century and beyond.”—Esquire “The shards and winks at Mailer’s own past that are scattered throughout the letters . . . are so tantalizing. They glitter throughout like unrefined jewels that Mailer took to the grave.”—The New Yorker “Indispensable . . . a subtle document of an unsubtle man’s wit and erudition, even (or especially) when it’s wielded as a weapon.”—New York “Umpteen pleasures to pluck out and roll between your teeth, like seeds from a pomegranate.”—The New York Times

Book excerpt: Maury Green was once a proud man. Now middle-aged, unmarried, and stuck in a dead-end job as a small-time real estate agent, he has few social prospects and fewer friends. The local Jewish community wrote him off years ago, when he slunk home to New Haven from the Israeli War of Independence, his spirit broken by the very men he tried to help. But now, twenty-five years later, Israeli General Yaacov Ronen is passing through the city on a fundraising tour, ahead of his run for prime minister. Somehow, the nebbish Maury winds up on the guest list for a soiree in the general’s honor. When he finally meets the general, Maury sees not an Israeli hero, but the taunting smile that’s been haunting his nightmares for decades. As he soon learns, General Ronen needs someone to do a bit of dirty work, someone expendable—someone like Maury. The general promises an impressive commission—but Maury will only collect if he lives. Maury launches a daring gambit the like of which nobody ever dreamed he could pull off: Outwit the great tactician, get even, and, in the process, regain his pride, his manhood, and the love of a wonderful woman—not to mention pocket the commission. If he survives. It’s Maury’s chance to be a hero once more … but to whom, and at what price?
