Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In my work on "John Brown, the Forgotten Chess Composer", Troubador (2011) I came across this booklet (100 pages, A4) on Lilian Baird, the young composer. It was kindly sent to me by the author, Christopher Ravilious, after a fruitless search for a copy on the internet. Only a few copies of the original book ever existed. I rate it very highly as an essential piece of research, and feel that it should be more widely known. Sadly Christopher passed away in January 2016. For thirty-two years he had been a librarian at Sussex University and was well respected as a first-rate archivist. Fortunately, Rita, Christopher's widow, agreed to it to being published so it has fallen to me to bring his book to you in this form. Besides fifty one of Lilian's compositions and solutions, it contains letters from famous 19th Century problemists such as Charles Gilberg, Frideswide F. Rowland, Heinrich F.L .Meyer, Philip H. Williams. and so on. It reminds us of an age which was slower and more comfortable, especially if one was fortunate enough to be born into a wealthy middle-class family. Frederick Gittins' description of Lilian in his book "The Chess Bouquet" (1897) sums up the heroine of this book "... A child of thirteen, with long sunny golden hair falling back from a fine and lofty forehead, thoughtful eyes, and all the shy grace of childhood, she has already, in some mysterious, intuitive way, learned the secret of problem-composing, and, absolutely unaided, has produced upwards of seventy compositions which have excited the admiration of the most critical judges. Some of the first composers of the day have dedicated problems to her honour, editors of chess columns are continually asking her to contribute, and people have asked her for her autograph - one of the surest evidence of fame. Like a wise mother, however, Mrs Baird seeks to keep her back rather than to press her forward, so she is now being kept mainly to her lessons and those natural pleasures of childhood to which even the most gifted boy or girl turns with joy. Like her mother, she writes verses quite charmingly and draws beautifully; but, with all her gifts, she remains a child and the happiest and most industrious of schoolgirls...". Lilian's mother, Mrs Edith Baird, was a very prolific composer. She published about 2000 of her problems under her husband's initials. "Mrs W. J. Baird". She created a new type of chess problem -the retractor, and wrote two books on chess problems: "The Twentieth Century Retractor" (1907) and "Seven Hundred Chess Problems" (1902). You are beginning to wonder how much help Lilian received from her famous mother? Fortunately, Christopher deals with this question in the book, and I am not going to spoil it by telling you his judgement. Sit back and enjoy the wonderful world of the 19th-century chess problem. Brian Gosling. July 2018.

Book excerpt: This Companion examines the connections between LGBTQ populations and American literature from the late eighteenth to twenty-first centuries. It surveys primary and secondary writings under the evolving category of gay and lesbian authorship, and incorporates current thinking in US-based LGBTQ studies as well as critical practices within the field of American literary studies. This Companion also addresses the ways in which queerness pervades persons, texts, bodies, and reading, while paying attention to the transnational component of such literatures. In so doing, it details the chief genres, conventional historical backgrounds, and influential interpretive practices that support the analysis of LGBTQ literatures in the United States.

Book excerpt: A page-turning novel that is also an exploration of the great philosophical concepts of Western thought, Jostein Gaarder's Sophie's World has fired the imagination of readers all over the world, with more than twenty million copies in print. One day fourteen-year-old Sophie Amundsen comes home from school to find in her mailbox two notes, with one question on each: "Who are you?" and "Where does the world come from?" From that irresistible beginning, Sophie becomes obsessed with questions that take her far beyond what she knows of her Norwegian village. Through those letters, she enrolls in a kind of correspondence course, covering Socrates to Sartre, with a mysterious philosopher, while receiving letters addressed to another girl. Who is Hilde? And why does her mail keep turning up? To unravel this riddle, Sophie must use the philosophy she is learning—but the truth turns out to be far more complicated than she could have imagined.

Book excerpt: Covering the nurse's role in promoting community health, Community/Public Health Nursing, 5th Edition is known for its "upstream" preventive focus and social justice approach, photo novellas with clinical stories, and a concise, readable style. It shows how you, as a nurse, can take an active role in social action and health policy – especially in caring for diverse population groups. Expert authors Mary A. Nies and Melanie McEwen discuss today's issues and trends, and describe the key issues and responsibilities of contemporary community/public health nursing. An "upstream" focus addresses factors that are the precursors to poor health in the community. A "social justice" approach promotes health for everyone. Photo novellas use photographs to tell stories showing real-life clinical scenarios and applications of important community health nursing roles. Case Study: Application of the Nursing Process feature presents specific community components of the nursing process separately from individual and family. Clinical examples offer snippets of real-life client situations. Research Highlights boxes show the application of current research to chapter content. Ethical Insights boxes highlight ethical issues and concerns. Healthy People 2020 boxes summarize objectives and their importance in community health. Objectives, key terms, and chapter outlines introduce important concepts and terminology at the beginning of every chapter. Learning Activities at the end of each chapter ask you to apply concepts to the world outside the classroom. New Health Promotion and Risk Reduction chapter details the promotion of health and presents strategies that can identify risk factors for illness. Faith Community Nursing chapter reflects current terminology from the ANAÕs Scope and Standards of Practice, and includes more coverage of the spiritual health of clients. Health: A Community View chapter expands its discussion of the continual challenges and strategies associated with the delivery of health care. Communicable Disease chapter includes new information about public health surveillance, outbreaks, and bioterrorism. Cultural Diversity and Community Health Nursing chapter features new content on complementary and alternative therapies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Chess, easy game!” – Miguel el Grande Among major chess figures of the 20th century, few stand out more than Miguel Najdorf. One of the world’s best players for decades, he was also one of the most active and colorful. And his life, both at the chessboard and away from it, was rich in experience, both joyful and deeply painful. In this biography, Najdorf’s daughter Liliana paints an intimate portrait of her larger-than life father. She writes about him, warts and all, showing us her father as a man both greatly talented and deeply flawed, a man at once loving and rage-prone, noble and petty, generous and selfish, jovial but despotic, earthy but vain, exuberant yet deeply sad. A genius who could conduct 40 blindfold games simultaneously and memorize long strings of random numbers, yet forgot where he parked his car. For the English-language edition, Dutch grandmaster Jan Timman has prepared a selection of annotated games and an in-depth foreword. These are complemented nicely by several historical essays, while many photographs round out this engrossing biography of one of the world’s most fascinating chessplayers of the 20th century.
