Book Synopsis Dancing with Devtas: Drums, Power and Possession in the Music of Garhwal, North India by : Andrew Alter
Download or read book Dancing with Devtas: Drums, Power and Possession in the Music of Garhwal, North India written by Andrew Alter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Central Himalayan region of Garhwal, the gods (devtas) enjoy dancing. Musicians - whether ritual specialists or musical specialists - are therefore an indispensable part of most entertainment and religious events. In shamanistic ceremonies, their incantations, songs and drumming 'make' the gods possess their mediums. In other contexts, such as dramatic theatrical renditions of stories of specific deities, actors 'dance' the role of their character having become possessed by the spirit of their character. Through the powerful sounds of their drumming, musicians cause the gods to dance. Music, and more particularly musical sound, is perceived in Garhwal as a powerful force. Andrew Alter examines music and musical practice in Garhwal from an analytical perspective that explores the nexus between musical sounds and performance events. He provides insight into performance practice, vocal techniques, notions of repertoire classification, instruments, ensembles, performance venues, and dance practice. However, music is not viewed simply as a system of organized sounds such as drum strokes, pitch iterations or repertoire items. Rather, in Garhwal, the music is viewed as a system of knowledge and as a system of beliefs in which meaning and spirituality become articulated through potent sound iterations. Alter makes a significant contribution to the discipline of ethnomusicology through a detailed documentation of musical practice in the context of ritual events. The book offers a traditionally thorough historical-ethnographic study of a region with the aim of integrating the local field-based case studies of musical practices within the broader Garhwali context. The work contains invaluable oral data, which has been carefully transliterated as well as translated. Alter blends a carefully detailed analysis of drumming in conjunction with the complex ritual and social contexts of this sophisticated and semantically rich musical practice.

Download or read book Beyond the Rainbow written by Prabhakar and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-09-13 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond the Rainbow by Prabhakar is a work of fiction. Each story is a poetic experience, aesthetic as well as elevating. The story connotes as a whole without any annotation. The moral and aesthetic coalesce. The stories are a portrayal of simple characters that come and go as silently as the day or the night. The stories approximate to an Indian macrocosm of vision and variety without any prejudice to their universal extent and intent. A pervasive sense of irony is ever there to chasten any romantic pigmentation. The book serves a sumptuous cocktail of romance and symbolism, humour and irony, realism and religion with a sympathetic human concern. It betrays a simple soul’s predicament and pride. Going through the book the reader would hear the echoes of the past, the present, and the future of humanity. A journey from ‘The Champion’ to ‘The Mahakumbha’ is a pilgrimage through India.

Book Synopsis Kavanagh by : Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Download or read book Kavanagh written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2012 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the annotated edition including an extensive primer on the author's life and works as well as a detailed introductory note to the work itself. There are some authors who take the world by storm, and, happening to produce at the first effort precisely what popular taste demands, escape the long probation of unrequited drudgery and unmerited neglect, and secure with one bold, brilliant leap the honor and emolument of literary success. You will be in love with " Kavanagh." from the very start. You can wander through its fascinations for the ninety-ninth time, and its fragrance continues to linger about you. It is a pleasant companion for any leisure hour ; and so is everything that comes from the pen of its author. Longfellow stands by himself, peculiar and ever distinct. No one of his brotherhood resembles him, and he resembles no one of them. A village teacher, a newly elected clergyman,an independent Yankee servant, and a couple of school girls are the dramatis persona. The plot is quite original. It turns on an accident to a carrier pigeon, which frightened by a kingbird misses its course, and bears a declaration of the young clergyman's love for one of the maidens to the house of her rival. The descriptions are all of a quaint and domestic kind, suitable to a portrayal of semi-rural life in New England.

Download or read book Islam in India written by Nasir Raza Khan and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-09 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islam in India: History, Politics and Society is based on the historical and contemporary relevance of the religion and its related culture(s) in India. Besides being a major religious doctrine, Islam has been the main political ideology for many dynasties in India such as Delhi Sultanate (1206-1451); the Illbaris Turks (also known as Mamluk 1206–90); Khiljis (1290–1320); Tughlaqs (1320–1414); Sayyids (1414–51), Afghans and the Mughal Empire. Islam played a pivotal role in shaping the polity and society during the period of each dynasty. This book argues that Islam in India ought to be seen not only as a political and religious ideology of the dynasties, but also as a significant force that shaped the cultural fabric of the country.
