This book was released on 2001 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First privately published in the United States in 1920 and ruthlessly reviewed on both sides of Atlantic, “Women in Love” remains one of the most provoking novels of this century. Largely because it defies single-mindedness or dogmatic preconceptions, the text has consistently thwarted the critics in their attemps at “nailing it dow”. The present collection of essays sets out to explore how the novel keeps “walking away with the nail”, as Lawrence himself wrote in “Morality and the Novel”.
Book Synopsis D.H. Lawrence, Music and Modernism by : Susan Reid
Download or read book D.H. Lawrence, Music and Modernism written by Susan Reid and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-06 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first book-length study of D. H. Lawrence’s lifelong engagement with music surveys his extensive musical interests and how these permeate his writing, while also situating Lawrence within a growing body of work on music and modernism. A twin focus considers the music that shaped Lawrence’s novels and poetry, as well as contemporary developments in music that parallel his quest for new forms of expression. Comparisons are made with the music of Debussy, Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Wagner, and British composers, including Bax, Holst and Vaughan Williams, and with the musical writings of Forster, Hardy, Hueffer (Ford), Nietzsche and Pound. Above all, by exploring Lawrence and music in historical context, this study aims to open up new areas for study and a place for Lawrence within the field of music and modernism.
Book Synopsis The Philosophy of the Marquis de Sade by : Timo Airaksinen
Download or read book The Philosophy of the Marquis de Sade written by Timo Airaksinen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-04 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Marquis de Sade is famous for his forbidden novels like Justine, Juliette, and the 120 Days of Sodom. Yet, despite Sade's immense influence on philosophy and literature, his work remains relatively unknown. His novels are too long, repetitive, and violent. At last in The Philosophy of the Marquis de Sade, a distinguished philosopher provides a theoretical reading of Sade. Airaksinen examines Sade's claim that in order to be happy and free we must do evil things. He discusses the motivations of the typical Sadean hero, who leads a life filled with perverted and extreme pleasures, such as stealing, murder, rape, and blasphemy. Secondary sources on Sade, such as Hobbes, Erasmusm, and Brillat-Savarin are analyzed, and modern studies are evaluated. The Philosophy of the Marquis de Sade greatly enhances our understanding of Sade and his philosophy of pain and perversion.
Book Synopsis The First 'Women in Love' by : D. H. Lawrence
Download or read book The First 'Women in Love' written by D. H. Lawrence and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-05-02 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First 'Women in Love' is one of Lawrence's greatest works, and is the only full length work of fiction which he completed between The Rainbow and the extensively revised Women in Love. It is a piece of fiction generated in the England, and the Europe, of the First World War. Publishers were alarmed by the fate of his previous novel The Rainbow and The First 'Women in Love' was rejected by every publisher who saw it. As a result it is a novel whose very existence as an independent text has been ignored, and which has not been published until now. The First 'Women in Love' shares much of its material with Women in Love, but its central relationships are dissimilar, and the ending radically different.

Book excerpt: E-artnow presents to you the greatest novels by one of the greatest novelists of English literature. This edition includes: The White Peacock The Trespasser Sons and Lovers The Rainbow Women in Love The Lost Girl Aaron's Rod Kangaroo The Boy in the Bush The Plumed Serpent Lady Chatterley's Lover The Man Who Died (The Escaped Cock) The Ladybird The Fox The Captain's Doll St Mawr The Virgin and the Gypsy The Savage Pilgrimage – A Biography of D. H. Lawrence by Catherine Carswell D. H. Lawrence is best known for his novels Sons and Lovers, The Rainbow, Women in Love and Lady Chatterley's Lover. In these books, Lawrence explores the possibilities for life within an industrial setting. In particular Lawrence is concerned with the nature of relationships that can be had within such a setting. Though often classed as a realist, Lawrence in fact uses his characters to give form to his personal philosophy. His depiction of sexuality, though seen as shocking when his work was first published in the early 20th century, has its roots in this highly personal way of thinking and being. In his later years Lawrence developed the potentialities of the short novel form in The Ladybird, The Fox, The Captain's Doll, St Mawr, The Virgin and the Gypsy and The Escaped Cock.

Book Synopsis The Wedding Ring by : D. H. Lawrence
Download or read book The Wedding Ring written by D. H. Lawrence and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-03-25 with total page 1456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When D.H. Lawrence wrote The Rainbow and Women in Love he had intended for it to be a single novel. One of the names he was considering was The Wedding Ring. The publisher, however, chose to break the work into two novels. Here are the two novels once again in single form. This novel follows generations of the Brangwen family, focusing on the sexual dynamics of, and relations between, the characters. Lawrence's frank treatment of sexual desire and the power plays within relationships as a natural and even spiritual force of life caused The Rainbow to be prosecuted in an obscenity trial in late 1915, as a result of which all copies were seized and burnt. After this ban it was unavailable in Britain for 11 years.

This book was released on 2021-06-30 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women in Love - David Herbert Lawrence - "Women in Love" is a novel by British author D. H. Lawrence published in 1920. It follows the loves and lives of the Brangwen sisters, Gudrun and Ursula. Gudrun Brangwen, an artist, pursues a destructive relationship with Gerald Crich, an industrialist. Lawrence contrasts this pair with the love that develops between Ursula and Rupert Birkin, an alienated intellectual who articulates many opinions associated with the author. The emotional relationships thus established are given further depth and tension by an intense psychological and physical attraction between Gerald and Rupert. The novel ranges over the whole of British society before the time of the First World War. Ursula's character draws on Lawrence's wife Frieda, and Gudrun on Katherine Mansfield, while Rupert Birkin has elements of Lawrence himself, and Gerald Crich of Mansfield's husband, John Middleton Murry.

Book excerpt: "The Rainbow" tells the story of three generations of the Brangwen family, a dynasty of farmers and craftsmen who live in the east Midlands of England, on the borders of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. The book covers a period from the 1840s to 1905, and shows how the love relationships of the Brangwens change against the backdrop of the increasing industrialization of Britain. The first central character, Tom Brangwen, is a farmer whose experience of the world does not stretch beyond these two counties; while the last, Ursula, his granddaughter, studies at university and becomes a teacher in the progressively urbanized, capitalist and industrial world. "Women in Love" is a sequel to novel The Rainbow, and follows lives of the Brangwen sisters, Ursula a schoolteacher, and Gudrun a painter. They meet two men who live nearby, school inspector Rupert Birkin and Gerald Crich, heir to a coal-mine, and the four become friends. Ursula and Birkin begin a romantic friendship, while Gudrun and Gerald eventually begin a love affair. The emotional relationships thus established are given further depth and tension by an intense psychological and physical attraction between Gerald and Rupert. All four are deeply concerned with questions of society, politics, and the relationship between men and women. The novel ranges over the whole of British society before the time of the First World War and eventually concludes in the snows of the Tyrolean Alps.
