Book excerpt: Singapore is a small island city-state located in Southeast Asia with a diverse population of people from different ethnic backgrounds such as Chinese, Malay, and Indian. It is widely known for its high standards of living, impeccable cleanliness, and booming economies. Singapore has also been ranked as one of the most livable cities in the world by various surveys over the years. It is a highly developed country with a highly educated workforce, advanced infrastructure, and excellent health care systems. The country's economy is heavily dependent on exports, mainly electronics, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals. Singapore is also a popular tourist destination showcasing their vibrant culture, cuisine, and iconic landmarks such as Marina Bay Sands, Gardens by The Bay, and Sentosa Island. However, Singapore's journey towards growth has not been without challenges. The country’s strategic location led to it being a colony of several different countries over the years, Chinese dialects and Malay are the official languages, but English is commonly used as a medium of communication due to its role in international trade. The country's size has also been a significant challenge, leading to government initiatives such as reclaiming land from the sea to make more land available for development. Despite these challenges, Singapore has overcome many odds to become one of the most successful and progressive countries in the world. It is an example to many other countries on how to prioritize education, infrastructure, and innovation to drive national growth and development.

Book excerpt: For professional photographers, chasing the light, waiting for it, sometimes helping it, and finally capturing it is a constant preoccupation and for some, an obsession. Drawing on four decades of working with light, Michael Freeman takes a simple but practical approach to interpreting, reacting to, and capturing photography's most valuable commodity. Practical advice is organised into three straightforward sections: Waiting, Chasing, and Helping. Begin by mastering the art of patience, and recognise the immense value of anticipating and planning for gorgeous light that's just over the horizon. Then learn the techniques to meet otherwise transient and fleeting lighting conditions halfway, with quick thinking and fast reactions. Finally, make the most of the tools at your disposal to enhance and manipulate light as you find it, covering everything from in-the-field shooting choices to technical transformations in post-production. This is the method of a working professional the way to interpret, approach, and master whatever lighting situation is thrown at you and always get the shot, no matter what.

From supervising underwater stunts on the glossy horror flick Leviathan, to reassuring Indiana Jones before another hazardous ordeal. This book was released on 2023-11-20 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last fifty years, human exploitation of marine resources has become more efficient as the understanding of the habits and behaviour of the various species available in the sea gradually increased. Thus, technologies have developed naturally over time and fishing gears and practices have become more sophisticated. These technical advances in fishing gear have generally led to more efficient economic fishing operations and better access to resources. However, fishing implies the harvesting of marine organisms directly from their natural environment, therefore general awareness of environmental problems due to the exploitation of fishery resources has also increased. In particular, the poor selectivity of some gears is responsible for the capture of juveniles, immature and undersized specimens of many species, with negative consequences on the state of stocks. In addition, bycatch in marine fisheries is a major source of human-caused mortality of marine megafauna, often leading to the capture of vulnerable species. Finally, many bottom-towed gears are responsible for high impacts on bottom communities and habitats, with cascading consequences on the entire marine ecosystem. All these impacts can lead to changes in the structure, function and integrity of ecosystems, including effects on the food webs and multispecies predator-prey relationships.
