Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lights and Shadows of Mormonism The initial though in connection with the writing of this volume was to assemble the evidences relating to the political perfidy of the Mormon "prophets," and to make a brief statement of the political incidents in the Utah from 1890 to 1909. The underlying motive was to prove that the continuous asseverations of the Mormon press and speakers to the effect that the prophets were not in politics are absolutely false. The falsehoods uttered and diligently circulated throughout the United States, and testified to under oath by the prophets during the "Smoot" investigation, relative to the non-interference of the Mormon leaders in politics, were so interwoven with their treachery in the matter of polygamy, that once phase of the subject could not be discussed without trenching upon the other. To make the subject intelligible to those unacquainted with the true inwardness of the Mormon theo-political imperium in imperio, an explanatory foundation was necessary. Every effort to find a starting place short of the very beginning of the system was fruitless. But a consecutive history of the rise and growth of Mormonism, no matter how condensed, would be too voluminous for the objective subject-matter of the work. It was therefore decided to discuss only those high-lights of the subject which hear more directly on the political aspect of Mormonism, and to introduce sufficient general details to keep the story intelligibly consecutive. In the matters of construction and direction, it is cheerfully conceded that the following pages are not bomb-proof to Mormon criticism. But the entire Mormon hierarchy, their servile tools and professional liars, are challenged to disprove the truth of the evidence of their unparalleled duplicity, and the legitimacy and justice of the conclusions and criticisms. Book excerpt: This is a turn of the century look at the Latter Day Saints by an opponent of the Mormons who hated them. It offers a glimpse of the kind of opposition faced by the Mormons in America during the late 19th century. From the intro: "The initial thought in connection with the writing of this volume was to assemble the evidences relating to the political perfidy of the Mormon "prophets," and to make a brief statement of the political incidents in Utah from 1890 to 1909. The underlying motive was to prove that the continuous asseverations of the Mormon press and speakers to the effect that the prophets were not in politics are absolutely false. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mormonism: Its Leaders and Designs My Friends: In writing the following work, I was not actuated by the base design of helping to malign an unpopular people, nor by the unworthy one of administering to mere idle curiosity. I wrote it nether to feed public prejudice, nor to supply public scandal. I wrote it for you; to you, therefore, I dedicate it. I know your sincerity; I know also your delusion. As sincerely deceived as yourselves, I have preceded you to Salt Lake City. Some things of what I there saw, with the reflections they have suggested, are contained herein. Of the much that ought to be said, I have endeavored to say a little. The subject, however, is by no means exhausted. While it is better to learn by personal experience than ever to remain ignorant, it is far wiser to profit by the experience of others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mormonism and the Mormons: An Epitome It seems a characteristic of American thought to center itself upon some important question, to hold it up to the searching gaze of the people, to examine it under the keen scalpel of criticism, concentrate the eye Of public Opinion upon it as the one thing alto gether important, pass judgment upon it, and then wave it to the background to make room for an other to be looked upon, examined and disposed of in like manner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mormonism: Its Origin, Doctrines and Dangers To say of Joseph Smith. He was one of the most disreputable and degenerate characters that appeared in that period of ignorance, irreligion and immigra tion. When God makes companions of devils, and reveals his truth to vicious and licentious men, then, but not till then, will it be possible to believe that Joseph Smith ever heard a voice or had a visitant from heaven.
