Book excerpt: Lightning Shell marks the dramatic conclusion to the People of Cahokia sub-series by bestselling authors W. Michael and Kathleen O'Neal Gear. Spotted Wrist’s squadrons are about to launch an assault on Evening Star Town. Meanwhile, the new Keeper’s loyal squadrons have taken control of central Cahokia. Blue Heron’s enemies have declared her dead, a supposed victim of the fire that consumed her palace. She’s alive and in the end it will be her wits, Seven Skull Shield’s licentious cunning, and a desperate gamble that determine who lives and who dies in Cahokia. Meanwhile, in the distant east, a desperate three-way race is underway. Walking Smoke—the Lightning Shell witch—hastens to make his way back to Cahokia, understanding that the cure for his impotence lies atop Morning Star’s Mound. Night Shadow Star means to stop him before he can get to Morning Star. Following in her wake, Fire Cat is merciless. He will stop at nothing to ensure that it is he, not Night Shadow Star, who pays the ultimate price. The final showdown will shake Cahokia to its roots, and nothing will be the same again. Book excerpt: Echoing with the sounds of the sea, an exquisite survey of the science and customs of conchs, clams, coquinas, cowries, and much more. Shells have captivated humans from the dawn of time: the earliest known artwork was made on a shell. As well as containers for food, shells have been used as tools, jewelry, decorations for dwellings, and to bring good luck or to ward off spirits. Many Indigenous peoples have used shells as currency, and in a few places, they still do. This beautifully illustrated book investigates the fascinating scientific and cultural history of shells. It examines everything from pearls—the only gems of animal origin—to how shells’ diverse colors and shapes are formed. And it reveals how shells have inspired artists throughout history, how shells have been used in architecture, and even how shells can be indicators of changing environmental conditions. Also including two essays by shell expert M. G. Harasewych, emeritus curator of gastropods in the Smithsonian’s Department of Invertebrate Zoology, Shells is an authoritative exploration of the deep human connection to these molluscan exoskeletons of sea, lake, land, and stream.

Book Synopsis Shamans of the Lost World by : William F. Romain
Download or read book Shamans of the Lost World written by William F. Romain and published by AltaMira Press. This book was released on 2009-10-16 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shamans of the Lost World bridges the gap between recent work in the cognitive sciences and some of humankind's oldest religious expressions. In this detailed look at the prehistoric shamanism of the Ohio Hopewell, Romain uses cognitive science, archaeology, and ethnology to propose that the shamanic worldview results from psychological mechanisms that have a basis in our cognitive evolutionary development. The discussions in this volume of the most current theories concerning how early peoples came to believe in spirits and gods, as well as how those theories help account for what we find in the archaeological record of the Hopewell, are of interest to archaeologists and cognitive scientists alike.
Book Synopsis The Puzzle of a Twin Paradox by : Ein .S
Download or read book The Puzzle of a Twin Paradox written by Ein .S and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2022-01-24 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two young men; an Artist and an Author, began The Puzzle of A Twin Paradox by introducing their talents to one another. The Artist displayed his musical talents and The Author listened, but when The Author displayed his writing talents, the two individuals were absorbed into the story he wrote, which turned out to be the same story the readers were reading. After being absorbed into the story, the two boys woke up in an underground library having no memory of who they were or how they got there. All they knew was that they looked alike, so they named one another and from then on they addressed each other as brother. The two brother's, Seth and Aiden, climbed to the surface together and in the midday sun they found that they were supposedly on an empty island. They thoroughly searched the island for hours and eerily found no other signs of life. Seth became bored during the searching process and requested a little entertainment from his brother, Aiden. Seeing that both boys were starting from a blank slate, Aiden said that he couldn't recap a tale because he knew no other story but the one they were living. However, to keep his brother's spirit up, he began to foreshadow the possibility of a boy that can wield lightning to fight against monsters. He titled the boy, an Alpha and he called the monsters, the Organisms. The narrative that Aiden had began, kept his brother focused, happy, and entertained while they searched for signs of life or an exit. After the sun sat the two decided to rest on the beach and continue the next morning. But when the moon rose, the narrative showed signs of coming to life around the brothers when they were targeted by the terrifying Organisms. Will they remember who they are in time to escape the story that trapped them inside of it? Or is it deeper than they think and they're not inside a story at all?
Download or read book Texas Seafood written by PJ Stoops and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2019-11-01 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The abundance of seafood available from the northwest Gulf of Mexico includes hundreds of delicious species that are often overlooked by consumers. Celebrating this regional bounty, Texas Seafood showcases the expertise of longtime fishmongers and chefs PJ and Apple Stoops. Readers will find familiar fish like Red Snapper along with dozens of little-known finfish and invertebrates, including tunas, mackerels, rays, and skates, as well as bivalves, shrimps, crabs, and other varieties, many of which are considered “bycatch” (seafood that a fisher didn’t intend to catch), but are no more difficult to prepare and are just as delicious as those commonly found at your local supermarket. The Stoopses provide a complete primer on sourcing these wild-caught delicacies, with fascinating details about habitats and life cycles as well as practical advice on how to discern quality. Texas Seafood concludes with simple, delectable recipes, many infused with the flavors of Apple’s Thai heritage. Dishes such as Steamed Curried Crab, Crispy White Shrimp, Escolar on a Grill with Green Mango Salad, Cast Iron Roasted Gulf Coast Swordfish Steaks with Rio Grande Grapefruit, and Chicken-Fried Ribbonfish are just a few ways to savor the best of the Gulf.
