Design, from places of worship to our places of rest, drives the way we live and learn as individuals. Buildings sizes and shapes play a role in transforming our cities into communities, and dictate the way we live within them. This holds true to all forms of architectural buildings. The proposed Light Rail Station and Streetcar Interpretation Center, located in Charlotte, NC, on Camden Road in Historic South End will shape the population of Charlotte in a unique way. The Architecture for this project focuses on the glass box. The transparent cube displays a part of Charlotte's trolley history within, while allowing it to become a part of the urban fabric in which it was built. The light rail station along with the Trolley museum will become a destination, adding to South End's unique fabric. Designed with modern materials and techniques, the building should be a reflection of Charlotte's rail transportation past and future. With this in mind, the Trolley Interpretation Center should be designed as an interactive museum that displays the working trolley line refurbished in all its glory. While the modern design with dining and outdoor recreation areas begin to identify movement in Architecture that begins to form the culture of light rail in Charlotte.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trains, Culture and Mobility: Riding the Rails goes beyond textual representations of rail travel to engage an impressive range of political, sociological and urban theory. Taken together, these essays highlight the complexity of the modern experience of train mobility, and its salient relation to a number of cultural discourses. Incorporating traditionally marginal areas of cultural production such as graffiti, museums, architecture or even plunging into the social experience of travel inside the traincar itself, each essay constitutes an attempt to work from the act of riding the train toward questions of much larger significance. Crisscrossing cultures from the New World and Old, from East and West, these essays share a common preoccupation with the way in which trains and railway networks have mapped and re-mapped the contours of both cities and states in the modern period. Bringing together individual and large-scale social practices, this volume traces out the cultural implications of "Riding the Rails."
