Book excerpt: This book endeavours to identify terms and standards defining qualities in architectural lighting. It uses this identification to promote communication and aid dialogue between designers and engineers, building owners and planners, professionals and laymen. Its 21 chapters are arranged in three sections covering the actual qualities of light, the relationship between light and space and, finally, the dimension of light in relation to culture. In each chapter, paired terms explore the design dimensions of light. Using texts, photos, computer graphics and drawings, the team of authors investigates each pair of terms. They begin with the original cultural and historical context, move onto didactic material on perception, lighting design and lighting technology and conclude with case studies in virtual architectural situations.

Book excerpt: Howard Teich has discovered a brilliantly simple and invaluable way of helping men and women move towards wholeness and healing. With vivid examples from his therapeutic practice and from his own life, Solar Light, Lunar Light presents Teich's pioneering development of the solar/lunar polarity, and his sharp distinction of this from the masculine/feminine polarity with which it has long been uncritically and often destructively conflated. Recognizing this distinction, and moving towards a deep integration and rebalancing of the solar and lunar principles, represents a crucial task not only for every individual but for our civilization. --Richard Tarnas, Professor of Philosophy and Psychology, California Institute of Integral Studies, Author of The Passion of the Western Mind and Cosmos and Psyche--- This is a significant, life changing book. Howard Teich's work is crucial to understanding and healing the damage our rigid ideas of gender have done to us all, women and men alike. This is a book that can change how you see every problem you encounter and point you toward deeper more creative responses. Here is a psychology that has the potential of restoring us all and our world to wholeness. ---Susan Griffin, author of A Chorus of Stones and Woman and Nature--- The perception that masculine and feminine traits represent oppositional forces has contributed to a long history of personal and cultural dysfunctions. Through a skillful interweaving of modern psychology, mythology and ancient history, Howard Teich, PhD offers a thought provoking thesis that these polarizing traits are actually cooperative partners in evolution s dynamic dance. Solar Light, Lunar Light is a healing journey that encourages readers to transcend misperceived limitations so that we may write a new empowering chapter in human evolution. --Bruce H. Lipton, Ph.D., Cell biologist and bestselling author of The Biology of Belief: Unleashing the Power of Consciousness, Matter and Miracles.

Book excerpt: Adventures of the mind can be just as exciting as adventures to exotic places. Guides for these adventures are plentiful, some are fictional, some are explorations into the natural world and some examine our place in it. Formal reality tours can last for years and result in advanced degrees in science and the humanities. The short tours provided here offer only the excitement of new and refreshing viewpoints and insights. Essays include glimpses into social relationships and politics, the origins of awareness, the world of atoms and long looks into the beginnings of the universe and life. Choose a tour and enjoy the adventure. Share it, analyze it, and discuss it, but be aware that a mind stretched by a new idea can never return to its original dimensions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eye-arresting images in this original contemporary art book feature two popular mediums, painting and photography. Although the art is inspired by the Long Island landscape, its visual appeal in artists’ interpretations of locations is universal. Paired with the dialog of the artists, the narrative becomes an intimate conversation with the reader. Combining life, loss, serendipity and art, it portrays two artists, whose conceptually similar work evolved independently until social media brought them together. Their collaboration continues to produce treasures of stunning, memorable beauty. The improbable pairing of Holly Gordon, photographer from Bay Shore, Long Island, and Ward Hooper, painter from Northport, Long Island, is a symbiotic match. Their artistic relationship is an affirmation of the human spirit in an age where most can’t seem to detach from objects. These two contemporary artists discovered a serendipitous connection to the earlier American artistic and personal alliance of Arthur Dove and Helen Torr, whose work was inspired by the same Long Island locations. The past thus joined the present, deepening Gordon and Hooper’s bond, both personally and geographically. In Gordon and Hooper’s intimate relationship there is a sense of empathy, connection, and mutual discovery that is invincible. Ward Hooper and Holly Gordon understand that the meaning of their journey extends beyond themselves. Their camaraderie and brilliant exposition beckons others to do the same and thereby reach their own heights in art and life. The transformative journey that unfolds centers on art as a positive force that ultimately unites two creative spirits. I found the imagery captivating and the text inspirational. Learning about how these two people from different art disciplines came together to help heal and enrich each others’ lives (and create wonderful imagery throughout the process) made me appreciate my life and relationships even more. The book may even encourage you to create something new, or collaborate with someone you already know...or someone who is out there waiting to be a part of your “Light's Journey.” -- Andrew Darlow, Photographer, Educator and Author ......A love story of friendship and renewal. Holly and Ward were meant to meet to discover their connection through art and nature. Two wonderful artists exploring life together through the warmth of colors, brush and lens strokes and subjects they created separately at different times and then together revealing their deep passion for life, friendship and art. --Charlee M. Miller, Executive Director, Art League of Long Island, Dix Hills, N.Y. Parallel Perspectives: The Brush/Lens Project gives us seamlessly created images that work on many levels: They pay attention to tiny details yet pulse with large swaths of vibrant color. They look like paintings — but they could be photographs, and vice versa. These are eye-arresting scenes, a visual harvest of the natural beauty that surrounds us, creating lasting sights that celebrate what talented artists have always quested for: the light. Holly Gordon finds images and builds digital layers that blend an unflinching assessment by a documentary photographer and environmentalist with a painterly sensitivity; Ward Hooper’s loose brushstrokes capture the ever-shifting light and shadow through watercolors that are as elusive as the light. Their collaboration continues to produce treasures of stunning, memorable beauty.—Annie Wilkinson Blachley’s features and cover stories have been published by The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and national and regional newspapers and magazines. She is a copy editor and columnist for the Long Island Press and writes several monthly columns for Long Island Woman Magazine

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PROCESSES AND PERSPECTIVES deals with the evolution/creation issue, but in a different manner from the usual mainstream works. As a retired professional biologist and Christian, I defend Darwins basic concepts of natural selection and disagree with the creationists perspective on Darwin in general and this topic specifically. This work focuses on modern science and scriptures commonalities by examining the full range of meaning for the Genesis Hebrew-words and the most current legitimate science. As a result, there are many new insights into science and the Genesis story. Also addressed are random/chance, falsification, literalism, and other related issues. This book not only demonstrates to religious and secular skeptics that the concept of organic and inorganic evolution is perfectly valid, but that the Genesis account is also valid if read without all the historic and current presumptions. This work violates only both sides preconceived notions and entrenched misunderstandings of each other. There is no scripture twisting or alternative science used to show the commonalities of the two on this subject. This work does not isolate one from the other. This is about building a legitimate, functioning bridge between the two groups. This topic has fascinated me ever since I saw my first prehistoric animals book in 4th grade. I am a retied U.S. Government scientist (Oceanographer/Ecologist/ Biologist) and a retired U.S. Air Force Reserves Lieutenant Colonel (Missile Launch Officer/Science Officer). I am also a Christian, specifically a Southern Baptist. Consequently, with these affiliations, I have seen and heard much about the Genesis and science conflict from both sides. Because of this, I accumulated references over some 30-years strictly for my own interest. However, this interest eventually took on a life of its own and became a manuscript.

The most effective family ministries refocus every church process to engage parents in discipling their children and to draw family members together instead of pulling them apart. In this second edition, Jones expands the definition of family ministry, and broadens the book's focus to address urban perspectives and family ministry in diverse settings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walter and Julia Alston were two parents with two different upbringings—one was from a family of means, and the other was from a family with very little. One was about trying to have success and wealth, and the other was about having nothing, spending and splurging and wasting more than could be grasped. Both Walter and his spouse, Julia, had major flaws. Both were all about him and herself. They had no plans to effectively share between themselves or among their ten children. They were all in it for themselves and not for each other and certainly not for their offspring. Despite their selfishness, they left their children with more than they realized; they left their children a treasure trove of stories—stories that were handed down through several generations from their parents and their parents’ parents. For generations, this had transpired by word of mouth that revealed family history, culture, entertainment, and family accomplishments. These stories brought pride, pleasure, and a sense of direction and well-being to the Alston family. These stories brought assured tangibles that would encourage, empower, teach, and would point the way forward.
