Book Synopsis Orthopaedic Biomechanics by : Beth A. Winkelstein
Download or read book Orthopaedic Biomechanics written by Beth A. Winkelstein and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-12-18 with total page 659 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the strong current attention of orthopaedic, biomechanical, and biomedical engineering research on translational capabilities for the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of clinical disease states, the need for reviews of the state-of-art and current needs in orthopaedics is very timely. Orthopaedic Biomechanics provides an in-depth review of the current knowledge of orthopaedic biomechanics across all tissues in the musculoskeletal system, at all size scales, and with direct relevance to engineering and clinical applications. Discussing the relationship between mechanical loading, function, and biological performance, it first reviews basic structure-function relationships for most major orthopedic tissue types followed by the most-relevant structures of the body. It then addresses multiscale modeling and biologic considerations. It concludes with a look at applications of biomechanics, focusing on recent advances in theory, technology and applied engineering approaches. With contributions from leaders in the field, the book presents state-of-the-art findings, techniques, and perspectives. Much of orthopaedic, biomechanical, and biomedical engineering research is directed at the translational capabilities for the "real world". Addressing this from the perspective of diagnostics, prevention, and treatment in orthopaedic biomechanics, the book supplies novel perspectives for the interdisciplinary approaches required to translate orthopaedic biomechanics to today’s real world.

Book Synopsis Bones and Cartilage by : Brian K. Hall
Download or read book Bones and Cartilage written by Brian K. Hall and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-06-20 with total page 789 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bones and Cartilage provides the most in-depth review ever assembled on the topic. It examines the function, development and evolution of bone and cartilage as tissues, organs and skeletal systems. It describes how bone and cartilage is developed in embryos and are maintained in adults, how bone reappears when we break a leg, or even regenerates when a newt grows a new limb, or a lizard a tail. This book also looks at the molecules and cells that make bones and cartilages and how they differ in various parts of the body and across species. It answers such questions as "Is bone always bone? "Do bones that develop indirectly by replacing other tissues, such as marrow, tendons or ligaments, differ from one another? "Is fish bone the same as human bone? "Can sharks even make bone? and many more.* Complete coverage of every aspect of bone and cartilage* Full of interesting and unusual facts* The only book available that integrates development and evolution of the skeleton* Treats all levels from molecular to clinical, embryos to evolution* Written in a lively, accessible style* Extensively illustrated and referenced* Integrates analysis of differentiation, growth and patterning* Covers all the vertebrates as well as invertebrate cartilages* Identifies the stem cells in embryos and adults that can make skeletal tissues
Book Synopsis Tissue Engineering of Temporomandibular Joint Cartilage by : Kyriacos Athanasiou
Download or read book Tissue Engineering of Temporomandibular Joint Cartilage written by Kyriacos Athanasiou and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a site of intense morbidity for millions of people, especially young, pre-menopausal women. Central to TMJ afflictions are the cartilaginous tissues of the TMJ, especially those of the disc and condylar cartilage, which play crucial roles in normal function of this unusual joint. Damage or disease to these tissues significantly impacts a patient's quality of life by making common activities such as talking and eating difficult and painful. Unfortunately, these tissues have limited ability to heal, necessitating the development of treatments for repair or replacement. The burgeoning field of tissue engineering holds promise that replacement tissues can be constructed in the laboratory to recapitulate the functional requirements of native tissues. This book outlines the biomechanical, biochemical, and anatomical characteristics of the disc and condylar cartilage, and also provides a historical perspective of past and current TMJ treatments and previous tissue engineering efforts. This book was written to serve as a reference for researchers seeking to learn about the TMJ, for undergraduate and graduate level courses, and as a compendium of TMJ tissue engineering design criteria. Table of Contents: The Temporomandibular Joint / Fibrocartilage of the TMJ Disc / Cartilage of the Mandibular Condyle / Tissue Engineering of the Disc / Tissue Engineering of the Mandibular Condyle / Current Perspectives

Book Synopsis Ultrastructure of Skeletal Tissues by : E. Bonucci
Download or read book Ultrastructure of Skeletal Tissues written by E. Bonucci and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The calcified tissues have fundamental functions in the biology of organisms, not only because their strength, solidity, and elasticity permit movement and mechanical activities, and protect soft tissues against traumatic forces, but also on account of their role in mineral homeostasis. For this reason, extensive investigation in the last 30 years has provided much to explain the complex chemical and physical processes occurring in cells and matrices composing the skeleton, and their alterations in pathological conditions. The use of ultrastructural methods such as immunocytochemistry, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, cytoautoradiography, freeze/fracture etching, high voltage, etc. has proven to be of great value when applied to cells and matrix components of bone and cartilage, in spite of the technical difficulties due to the hardness of these tissues. However, available information on this subject is disseminated in a variety of scientific and medical articles. This volume is an attempt to collect together the most significant data on the ultrastructure of cartilage and bone in normalcy and pathology. Obviously, it cannot be a complete report of all these data, its principal aim being that of: a) giving a comprehensive statement of the results concerning the basic structures common to these tissues, especially collagen fibrils, noncollagenous proteins, and proteoglycans, and their relationships with the mineral substance (for which another volume of this series can also be consulted; see Ruggeri A. , Motta P. M. (eds.
