Book excerpt: Ligand design in general enables the formation of coordination compounds with multiple functionalities within a single framework. To date, two of the most widely studied ligands are 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (terpy) and acetylacetone (acac), whose tridentate and bidentate coordination pockets, respectively, enables the formation of metallic complexes with various geometries. The Brusso group had been incorporating imidoyl amidine (ImAm) ligands to build different materials such as organic radicals and fluorescent materials. In particular, the ligands N-2-pyridylimidoyl-2-pyridylamidine (Py2ImAm) and N-2-pyrimidylimidoyl-2-pyrimidylamidine (Pm2ImAm) were recently synthesized and have great appeal to build metallic complexes, as they poses two coordination sites similar to those in terpy and acac. The work presented herein represents the first studies involving the coordination of Py2ImAm and Pm2ImAm as discrete ligands. Our results demonstrate the versatility of these ligand frameworks, in which discrete mononuclear complexes, homometallic and heterometallic polynuclear complexes may be realized. Chapter one serves as a brief introduction to transition metal chemistry and has a comprehensive review of the coordination chemistry of the ImAm ligand framework. In chapter two, the selective coordination of first row transition metals into the bidentate or tridentate sites of Py2ImAm is explored. The formation of these mononuclear complexes is acid-base driven, where a weak acid induces coordination to the tridentate site and a weak base leads to coordination in the bidentate site. Coordination to both sides of Pm2ImAm with manganese or iron is explored in chapter three. The results show the formation of unusual tetranuclear complexes with the metal ions in both low spin and high spin configurations. Chapter four covers the coordination to cobalt, and the formation of polynuclear complexes with different geometries using Pm2ImAm. The magnetochemistry of these cobalt polynuclear complexes is also presented and reveal a single molecule magnet behaviour for one of the complexes. Finally, in chapter five, a one-pot synthesis of copper-manganese heterometallic complexes is presented. Overall, these imidoyl amidine ligands are able to build complexes with different geometries, different electronic configurations (i.e. low or high spin), and different metal ions. These results show a great versatility of ImAm ligands and suggest the future use of these ligands by other research groups.

Book excerpt: Two decades of research on single molecule magnets (SMMs) led to multiple concepts to reach one of the most ambitious goals in molecular magnetism, a high energy barrier (Ueff ) for the magnetization reversal of a single molecule. This energy barrier is dependent on the spin ground state (S) and the axial magnetoanisotropy (D) of the molecule. Previous research projects led to complexes with remarkably high S or D values but only few combining both. Up to now, a systematical manipulation and control of S and D on a molecular scope has not been accomplished yet. Herein, a systematic approach to obtain a high spin ground state accompanied with high molecular magnetic anisotropy is presented using the versatile compound class of metallacrowns (MCs). The magnetic director approach has proven to effectively yield 12-MC-4 structures with high spin ground states. In addition, the planar crown scaffold represents an ideal framework to align the Jahn-Teller axes of ring forming metal ions with high single ion anisotropy. Prerequisites for an effective use of both concepts are the ability of the central guest ion to take part in strong magnetic exchange coupling and a tuneable anisotropic electron distribution of the ring forming metal ions. Hence, 3d transition metal ions express themselves as the optimal choice. Systematic synthesis of heterometallic MCs requires varying selectivity of the central and the ring coordination pockets. To fulfill this condition, two distinct ligand optimizations were followed in this work. The donor atoms on apical coordination sites of the crown metal ions were varied yielding to a different binding affinity according to Pearson's HSAB concept. Moreover, additional coordinating functionalities were introduced in established MC ligand systems, like amidoximes, in order to adjust the whole coordination environment of the crown forming metal ions. According to these approaches, several new 3d MC compounds were synthesized and analyzed using infrared spectroscopy, single crystal X-ray diffraction and SQUID magnetometry. Synthesis and the use of 2-methylmercaptobenzohydroxamic acid led to the isolation of the very first cadmium(II) metallacrown opening new perspectives for an improvement of the luminescence properties of this compound class. To highlight some of the results, a mixed valent cobalt(II/III) MC, double decker and a discrete Cu(II) MC and even two manganese double decker MCs are reported in this work.

This thesis also explores new ways of expanding our ligand systems, in order to improve their binding capacities. We accomplished this by utilizing familiar redox-active moieties and structures to those published previously in our group, but with enhanced topological capacities and predictable structural outcomes. Chapter 1 begins with a general outline of the fundamental principles that govern organic radicals including; their reactivity, their properties and applications, and how these can be applied to the design of ligands for polynuclear assembly. Chapter 2 starts with a brief overview of arylazo ligands and the synthesis of a new hydrazone substituted phenalenol ligand (2.1). In the following section (2.2) we use this ligand to produce homoleptic ligand mixed-valence complexes featuring trivalent cobalt and iron metals. The chapter is concluded (2.3) with the synthesis of a new ditopic aryl-azo ligand and its cobalt coordination chemistry involving a neutral tetra-radical/tetra-nuclear molecular grid featuring valence tautomerism. Chapter 3 begins with the design and synthesis of a new ditopic diamino phenol ligand, which was found to oxidize to a neutral stable phenoxyl radical (3.1-3.2). The solution properties, which include reversible pi-dimerization of this stable radical are also described (3.3), and later the substitution chemistry of this new ligand is explored (3.4). In chapter 4, we describe the coordination chemistry of this new ditopic aminophenol ligand, which includes assembly into several coordination clusters involving copper (4.2), iron (4.3), nickel (4.4), and zinc (4.5). These coordination clusters feature the ligand in a variety of oxidation states; including rare examples of dianion "aminyl" radical clusters. In chapter 5, we begin with a description of a new synthetic derivative which can be used for the construction of larger tetratopic or asymmetric diamino phenol ligands. In 5.2 we describe the synthesis of a tetratopic aminophenol ligand along with its reactivity and aerial oxidation to a tri-phenoxyl radical. In 5.3, we conclude the thesis with the use of an asymmetric diamino phenol ligand and it's Cu(II/III) coordination chemistry, which displayed unique reactivity with molecular oxygen.

Book excerpt: Interest in lanthanide (Ln) coordination chemistry has increased significantly over the past few years, in particular as a result of their intriguing spectral and magnetic properties. LnIII ions are “hard acids” and generally prefer to coordinate with “hard bases” such as O- and F-donor ligands. Their coordination geometries are usually determined by ligand steric factors rather than crystal field effects. The research described in this dissertation mainly focuses on the interaction of LnIII ions with O-donor ligands such as carboxylates and polyols, while aiming to synthesize Ln-based polynuclear coordination compounds having interesting magnetic properties. Moreover, investigation of the influence of ligand back-bone on the magneto-structural properties of the resulting compounds was explored. Consequently some novel and efficient one-pot synthetic methodologies have been successfully developed to prepare Ln-based polynuclear clusters as well as networks of various dimensionalities, displaying exciting magnetic properties. Also correlations between structural parameters and magnetic properties have been established. The resulting compounds were characterized in detail using analytical methods like FT-IR, elemental analysis, single crystal XRD, powder XRD, and magnetic SQUID measurements. The first approach, based upon a systematic study of Ln-carboxylate chemistry, has led to the isolation of two 1D chains possessing single chain magnet (SCM) properties, a 2D honeycomb network, two chiral metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and one porous MOF showing slow relaxation of the magnetisation. This study has increased the understanding of the self-assembly processes of LnIII ions under the influence of various aliphatic as well as aromatic carboxylate ligands. The second approach relies upon introducing an additional polyol ligand into the Lncarboxylate system, in order to investigate further the magneto-structural variations of the binary ligand system. This led to a variety of discrete molecular clusters ranging in nuclearity from 3 to 26, exhibiting SMM behavior. In addition to this, two 1D polymers with the highest energy barriers to reversal of the magnetization found for 4f-based single chain magnets reported so far and a 2D honeycomb network showing slow relaxation of its magnetization have been characterized. The third approach aimed to incorporate an additional metal ion, such as MnII, into the Ln-polyol-carboxylate system, thereby synthesizing heterometallic complexes with interesting magnetic properties. This resulted in a series of mixed-valent heterometallic decanuclear clusters exhibiting SMM behavior. Finally, the organic polyol ligand was replaced with a purely inorganic polyoxometalate anion, in order to synthesize some organic/inorganic hybrid materials with novel magnetic properties. This resulted in a series of polynuclear aggregates some of which show SMM behavior.
