Book excerpt: A lifetime prediction model has been developed for polymer coating/ metal systems. The elements of the model fall into the category of system variables that describe the surface of the substrate, the coating or the environment, or the category of processes that determine the degradation of the coated metal. These processes include formation of defects in the coating and at the metal/coating interface, transport of corrosive species to the metal, loss of adhesion, corrosion and failure. The casual relationship between system variables and processes has been discussed. The lifetime prediction model is based on a series of experimental studies which have been performed during the course of this project. A number of new techniques have been developed which can be used to determine the properties of the coating/metal compound and its changes during interaction with corrosive environments. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) has been found to be very valuable in providing information concerning the coating and the metal surface and degradation of the coatings as corrosion proceeds. An acoustic pulse technique has been used to detect areas of delamination and corrosion. Acoustic emission from coated steel during straining of the sample has provided characteristic fingerprints for surface and coating properties and has demonstrated the importance of the mechanical properties of the coating. Keywords: Anodizing; Polyurethane coating; Copper; Zinc; Electrodes; Delamination; Cathodic protection; Pigments; Sodium chloride; Exposure.

Book excerpt: The objective of this project is to develop a lifetime model which takes into account the corrosion susceptibility of metal substrates, the properties of organic coatings and the corrosivity of the environment. The results obtained during the first year include the characterization of steel surfaces which had been subjected to different pretreatment methods using surface chemistry analysis (AES, XPS, SEM), surface energetics analysis, and surface mapping. The deposition kinetics and surface morphology of zinc phosphate coatings on steel surfaces with different pretreatment have been studied with preliminary analysis using a.c. impedance techniques. These results provide a quantitative characterization of the substrate and provide input for a lifetime prediction model of polymer coated metal. (Author).

The field has seen significant recent progress and this volume collects many of the new methods. It includes methods for characterizing outdoor and lab test chambers, related statistical methods, research on the chemistry and mechanics of failure, and current work on large data bases of experimental results. The book describes how to measure the environmental factors and the changes which occur in coatings, and then how to relate this information to cumulative damage models. It also discusses methods for risk management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of electrochemical noise (ECN) as a method to characterize the corrosion-protection properties of organic coatings on metal substrates was pioneered by Skerry and Eden, and since then has been used by others as a probe for coating metal corrosion studies. However, no statistical examination of the reproducibility of the data from such measurements has been published. In the data we present, we have done a systematic analysis of important experimental variables in such systems. We have examined the method for accuracy and reproducibility with respect to sample preparation, sample immersion, and metal substrate preparation. We have taken several marine coatings systems typical of U.S. Navy use, prepared duplicate samples of coating metal systems, and examined them under the same immersion exposure. The variables we considered for reproducibility are paint application (in three-coat systems), metal panel preparation (grit-blasted steel), and immersion conditions. We present ECN data with respect to immersion time on the values of noise voltage standard deviation ?V, noise current standard deviation ?l, and the noise resistance Rn as given by ?V/?l. The variation among supposedly identical sample pairs in identical immersion monitored under identical conditions is presented. The statistics of the time records of the data are considered, and the variations with respect to specific coatings classes are also considered within the limits of the data. Based on these data, comments concerning ECN on coated metal systems as a predictive test method are presented along with special considerations that must be made to properly use the method for coating ranking and lifetime prediction.

Book excerpt: Organic photovoltaics (OPV) are a new generation of solar cells with the potential to offer very short energy pay back times, mechanical flexibility and significantly lower production costs compared to traditional crystalline photovoltaic systems. A weakness of OPV is their comparative instability during operation and this is a critical area of research towards the successful development and commercialization of these 3rd generation solar cells. Covering both small molecule and polymer solar cells, Stability and Degradation of Organic and Polymer Solar Cells summarizes the state of the art understanding of stability and provides a detailed analysis of the mechanisms by which degradation occurs. Following an introductory chapter which compares different photovoltaic technologies, the book focuses on OPV degradation, discussing the origin and characterization of the instability and describing measures for extending the duration of operation. Topics covered include: Chemical and physical probes for studying degradation Imaging techniques Photochemical stability of OPV materials Degradation mechanisms Testing methods Barrier technology and applications Stability and Degradation of Organic and Polymer Solar Cells is an essential reference source for researchers in academia and industry, engineers and manufacturers working on OPV design, development and implementation.
