Book excerpt: When Jesus was walking the earth, everyone had a theory about who he was—healer, revolutionary, king, friend, humble carpenter. But out of the vast complexity of characteristics and ideas there emerges one simple word that no one can deny: “Rabbi.” These 36 Bible studies capture the heart of Jesus the Rabbi. He was a revolutionary, miracle-working, loving, powerful, divine teacher. For those whose minds are ready to be expanded, whose hearts are hungering to be touched, and whose lives are ripe for growth, John Ortberg and Bill Hybels invites people of all ages and backgrounds to pull up a chair and dig into the life lessons of Jesus captured in the Bible throughout the Gospels. Designed for use as personal Bible study or group study, the interactive format will help readers grow in their ability to reflect the character of Jesus. Studies include: Twelve Studies on the Sermon on the Mount by Bill Hybels Six Studies on The Lord’s Prayer by John Ortberg Six Studies on the Parables by John Ortberg Six Studies on The Passion Story by Bill Hybels Six Studies on Luke by Bill Hybels

Book excerpt: One of four books in the ILLUSTRATED BIBLE SUMMARY series, The Life and Teachings of Jesus draws on the four Gospels to provide a single narrative of Jesus' life and teachings. For the pastor or Bible teacher it serves as a concise summary that can be consulted and readily accessed for preaching and teaching from one of the Gospels or on a topic addressed in Jesus' teachings. The Life and Teachings of Jesus begins the prologue to John's Gospel who tells of the Word who was with God and was God. It moves through the announcement of Jesus' birth to the climactic events of his crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension to the Father. The book is colorfully illustrated and uses a number of icons to call attention to recurring features that are helpful in grasping the wonder of this One who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Catholics, how are we called to make a difference in a world that can be difficult to understand? Every weekend, parishes across our global church welcome millions on their faith journeys to share joy, pain, fellowship, and understanding. Finding a way to guide congregations through economic, cultural, and political problems is critical. We may not know exactly how Jesus would have handled specific issues of today, but we can look to his actions, words, and spirit to give us guidance for challenging situations. This resource provides a unique approach for understanding the important connection between the liturgy and the seven primary themes of Catholic social teaching. It will inspire you to deepen your relationship with God and with others, to become more aware of the needs of the world, and recommit yourself to live as Christ’s disciples in the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Dickens's other Christmas classic, with a new introduction by Dickens's great-great-grandson, Gerald Charles Dickens. Charles Dickens wrote The Life of Our Lord during the years 1846-1849, just about the time he was completing David Copperfield. In this charming, simple retelling of the life of Jesus Christ, adapted from the Gospel of St. Luke, Dickens hoped to teach his young children about religion and faith. Since he wrote it exclusively for his children, Dickens refused to allow publication. For eighty-five years the manuscript was guarded as a precious family secret, and it was handed down from one relative to the next. When Dickens died in 1870, it was left to his sister-in-law, Georgina Hogarth. From there it fell to Dickens's son, Sir Henry Fielding Dickens, with the admonition that it should not be published while any child of Dickens lived. Just before the 1933 holidays, Sir Henry, then the only living child of Dickens, died, leaving his father's manuscript to his wife and children. He also bequeathed to them the right to make the decision to publish The Life of Our Lord. By majority vote, Sir Henry's widow and children decided to publish the book in London. In 1934, Simon & Schuster published the first American edition, which became one of the year's biggest bestsellers.

Book excerpt: "Besides Jesus, no one has kept me from despair, or taken me deeper into the mysteries of the gospel, than the apostle Paul." —John Piper No one has had a greater impact on the world for eternal good than the apostle Paul—except Jesus himself. For John Piper, this impact is very personal. He does not just admire and trust Paul. He loves him. Piper gives us thirty glimpses into why his heart and mind respond this way. Can a Christian-killer really endure 195 lashes from a heart of love? Can a mystic who thinks he was caught up into heaven be a model of lucid rationality? Can an ethnocentric Jew write the most beautiful call to reconciliation? Can a person who lives with the unceasing anguish of empathy be always rejoicing? Can a man's description of the horrors of human sin be exceeded by his delight in human splendor? Can a man with a backbone of steel be as tender as a nursing mother? If we know this man—if we see what Piper sees—we too will love him. Paul's testimony is a matter of life and death. Piper invites you into his relationship with Paul in the hope that you will know life, forever.
