Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hilarious collection of Jack Knox's best-loved humour columns. In this side-splitting follow-up to the bestseller Hard Knox: Musings from the Edge of Canada, Jack Knox presents his best writing, marking his twenty-year anniversary as a humour columnist at the Victoria Times Colonist, the newspaper that made him a household name. Revisiting his most—and least!—popular columns, Knox weighs the potential benefits of a marijuana-like drug that reduces anxiety in rats; reports on the “Bush Boys,” a pair of brothers who emerged from the forest near Vernon with a dubious story about being raised in the wilderness (they were actually from suburban California); and muses over fictional characters such as Barbie, Ken, Harry Potter, and Archie growing up and facing the grim realities of life. He also includes a hilarious collection of “nastygrams” (a.k.a. hate mail) that he’s received over the past two decades. Opportunity Knox goes to show that humour comes when you least expect it. From politics to weather, sports to entertainment, Knox finds the bizarre in everyday life and the ordinary in what should by all accounts be bizarre.

Book excerpt: The nature writing of Gary Ferguson arises out of intimate experience. He trekked 500 miles through Yellowstone to write Walking Down the Wild and spent a season in the field at a wilderness therapy program for Shouting at the Sky. He journeyed 250 miles on foot for Hawks Rest and followed through the seasons the first fourteen wolves released into Yellowstone National Park for The Yellowstone Wolves. But nothing could prepare him for the experience he details in his new book. The Carry Home is both a moving celebration of the outdoor life shared between Ferguson and his wife Jane, who died tragically in a canoeing accident in northern Ontario in 2005, and a chronicle of the mending, uplifting power of nature. Confronting his unthinkable loss, Ferguson set out to fulfill Jane's final wish: the scattering of her ashes in five remote, wild locations they loved and shared. The act of the carry home allows Ferguson the opportunity to ruminate on their life together as well as explore deeply the impactful presence of nature in all of our lives. Theirs was a love borne of wild places, and The Carry Home offers a powerful glimpse into how the natural world can be a critical prompt for moving through cycles of immeasurable grief, how bereavement can turn to wonder, and how one man rediscovered himself in the process of saying goodbye.

Book excerpt: RBC Bronwen Wallace Award winner Noor Naga's bracing debut, a novel-in-verse about a young woman's romantic relationship with a married man and her ensuing crisis of faith. 2021 Arab American Book Award - George Ellenbogen Poetry Award, Winner Pat Lowther Memorial Award, Winner Gerald Lampert Memorial Award, Longlist Fred Cogswell Award For Excellence In Poetry, Second Place Winner CBC Best Canadian Poetry of 2020 Coocoo is a young immigrant woman in Toronto. Her faith is worn threadbare after years of bargaining with God to end her loneliness and receiving no answer. Then she meets her mirror-image; Muhammad is a professor and father of two. He's also married. Heartbreaking and hilarious, this verse-novel chronicles Coocoo's spiraling descent: the transformation of her love into something at first desperate and obsessive, then finally cringing and animal, utterly without grace. Her best friend, Nouf, remains by her side throughout, and together they face the growing contradictions of Coocoo's life. What does it mean to pray while giving your body to a man who cannot keep it? How long can a homeless love survive on the streets? These are some of the questions this verse-novel swishes around in its mouth.

Book excerpt: The creativity that has resulted in this writing was packaged in a special receptacle that was finally rediscovered after many years of storage. The title came from feelings unearthed as a result of its new makeover. Life is a self-renewing journey packed with thoughts of lost times. The refreshed visualizations that resulted from those lost times brought forth new freedom of discovery. Like walking into an antique store, busily perusing and exploring, feelings mesh with the mindful artifacts or treasures of the past. The passion attached to those artifacts stitches that past into who we are today. To quote Anais Nin, "We don't see things as they are. We see them as we are." Outward Bound is a novel built upon those free-flowing thoughts that are born with youth and somehow remain attached. In Carl Sagan's best seller, Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, it is stated that we are all orphans on the doorstep of time. Ingeniously, the cover depicts a tiny baby naked with flailing arms in a basket next to double doors opening up into a dark universe beyond. As tiny particles of cosmic dust, we thrive past that threshold to realize who we are and grow from the sensory stimulus that we encounter. In this chance experience of life, moments of the past are captured, and those threads are sewn into a trajectory toward the future. It is the intention of the author of this novel to also knit parts of the fixtures of space and time together into a mosaic that paints the future. The present enters widely into a free-flowing intact world that reunites all the threads resulting from the past, present, and future. These fixtures of time mingle freely throughout the framework of the novel. Love is a special tune that grows boundless in the wilderness of the eucalyptus. In Outward Bound, there is freedom expressed through the setting, the people, the way of life, and the infinite sense of awe that reflects off the Australian sky.

When her father's caretaker fails to show one evening, she’s terrified she’ll lose her job. And then Willow runs away. Panicked, Kerry gives chase and immediately runs smack into a tall, dark and sexy wall of muscle, palming a squirming bundle of fur. Her new hero seems like an answer to her prayers. Sure he can handle a cranky old man, but the quiet comfort of Willow who follows him around with liquid-eyed sympathy tugs at the heart he’s trying to keep walled-off after his many painful losses. Kerry knows Willow can ease Caleb’s grief, but he continues to push her away. Even though her life is in shambles and she too should walk, Kerry knows she can’t and won’t. Will Caleb accept her help or will he close himself off completely?

Book excerpt: Taiwan aboriginal song has received extensive media coverage since the launch and settlement of a copyright lawsuit following pop group Enigma's allegedly unauthorized use of Amis voices in the 1996 Olympics hit, Return To Innocence. Taking as her starting point the ripple effects of this case, Shzr Ee Tan explores the relationship of this song culture to contemporary Amis society. She presents Amis song in its multiple manifestations as an ecosystem, symbiotic components of which interact and feed back upon one another in cross-cutting platforms of village life, festival celebration, cultural performance, popular song, art music and Christian hymnody. Tan's investigation hinges upon drawing a conceptual line between ladhiw, the Amis term for 'song' - a word vested with connotations of life-force, tradition, ritual and taboo - and the foreign term of yinyue ('music' - borrowed from Mandarin). This difference forms the basis of how Amis song is (re)constructed through processes of modernization, Christianization and politico-economic change. A single Amis melody, for example, can exist in several guises that are contextually exclusive but functionally mutually-supportive. Thus, a weeding song (ladhiw), which may have lost its traditional context of existence following advancements in farming technology, becomes sustained within a larger ecosystem, finding new life on the interacting platforms of Amis Catholic hymnody, karaoke and tourist shows. The latter genres (collectively, yinyue) may not rely on traditional livelihoods for survival, but thrive on a traditional melody's deeper associations to local memory and idealized Amis identities. While these new and old genres are stylistically separate, they feed into each other and back into themselves - through transforming contexts and cross-referenced memes - in organic and developing cycles of song activity. Drawing from fieldwork conducted from 2000-2010 as well as a background in ethnomusicology and journalism, Ta
