Book excerpt: Over half of Americans believe in a literal heaven, in a literal hell. Most people who hold these beliefs are Christian and assume they are the age-old teachings of the Bible. Ehrman shows that eternal rewards and punishments are found nowhere in the Old Testament, and are not what Jesus or his disciples taught. He recounts the long history of the afterlife, ranging from The Epic of Gilgamesh up to the writings of Augustine, focusing especially on the teachings of Jesus and his early followers. Ehrman shows that competing views were intimately connected with the social, cultural, and historical worlds out of which they emerged. -- adapted from jacket

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death is a mystery, and people fear that which they do not understand. No one looks forward to dying, but it is inevitable. The mystery is, "Is there something or someplace where a person will go to after their last breath?" There are many beliefs concerning this matter, and not all of them can be true. Television and the media have trained our minds to believe that heaven and hell is a figment of our imagination. There is no life after this one. Others believe in some sort of heaven or hell. They have questions: Are they real? What are they like? What goes on while there? Where are they? And vitally important, Who will reside in either place, and why? The focus of this book is to develop an understanding about hell. Hell will remain a mystery as long as a person does not go to the source for the information. There are books written which speak of people who have died, gone to hell, and then come back. Should we believe them? Are they fiction or fact? Where can we go to receive the truth and answers? Is there a source which we can believe and not question? This book is not written on fable or fiction but on fact. The writer never went to hell or had visions from God. The answers concerning hell are available to any who seeks and is interested in their life after death. Read on and become informed. Knowledge of hell will help the reader in making a life-changing decision. Read on if you desire the truth.

Book excerpt: A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Choose you this day whom you will serve (Joshua 24:15). Every day, we are making that choice, whether we realize it or not, to live a life that reflects God or a life that reflects Satan. Whichever way we choose to live our life, at the end of that life comes death, then the judgment (Hebrews 9:27). You can believe this or not. The Word of God is faithful and true, and anyone's disbelief of the Scriptures cannot change it or make it become untrue. It only concludes one of two things: if you are right, then you did not waste any time; but if you are wrong, then the wrath of God lieth at your door, and hell will be your final "nonresting" place. He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. (John 3:36) I pose the question to you: Where do you think you will go after you die? There is a place called heaven, and there is a place called hell, and you have the choice now to decide which place you will reside for all eternity. I hope believers who read this book will become even further assured, through the Scriptures, that they will see their loved ones again in heaven; and those who do not believe will receive the clarity they need to know that there is life after death, and the decision for where they spend eternity is their choice.

Book excerpt: Heaven Heaven is not a ghostlike, foggy atmosphere where disembodied spirits float around. Heaven is as real as this earth. Jesus told His disciples, "I go to prepare a place for you" (John 14:2). Paul taught that Christians would have new imperishable bodies (1 Corinthians 15:51-57). Again, contrary to many popular ideas, Heaven is not dull. The things that are killjoys on earth--selfishness, hatred, death--all will be gone. Heaven will not be a place where we sit around with nothing to do. The Bible suggests that Heaven will be a place for dynamic, creative and untiring activity, but without toil and fatigue (Revelation 21:1-7). Heaven will also be a place of intellectual stimulation. Here we "see through a glass darkly," but there, "face to face," we shall see God (1 Corinthians 13:12). Are you going? Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.... He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life" (John 14:6; 5:24). Hell Jesus and the New Testament writers use every image in their power to tell us that Hell is real, terrible, something to be feared and avoided at all costs. Never forget that the talk about outer darkness and the lake of fire came from Jesus, who died to save us. In His parable of the last judgment Jesus taught that some would go to eternal punishment, some to eternal life (Matthew 25:46). In other words, Hell will be as real and lasting as Heaven. The most frightening thing about Hell is that it is spiritual separation from God, moral remorse, the consciousness that one deserves what he is getting. Hell is total separation from the love, joy, and peace that come from God. Are you going? "He that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him" (John 3:36). "The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; and shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth" (Matthew 13:41-42). Which will you choose? You must decide where you will spend eternity. Jesus Christ has paid the full penalty for your sins on the cross. "Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God" (1 Peter 3:18). Now you must come to Him just as you are--a guilty sinner unable to save yourself. Commit your life to Christ today! You can pray something like this: God, thank You for sending Jesus to take the punishment for my sins that I might spend eternity in Heaven with You. I turn from my sin and invite You into my life to be my Lord and Savior. In Jesus' name, amen. Portions of this text were written by Leighton Ford. (c)1974 Campus Crusade for Christ, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this companion book to Heaven and Hell, David Pawson continues with the subject of the life to come, which despite being integral to the Christian faith is too often neglected. David considers the biblical teaching on the last things (death, judgment, heaven, and hell) and the challenges posed to the Christian in the modern world. In doing so, he asks penetrating questions such as: What does the Bible teach about resurrection? What happens immediately after death? Did Jesus really go to hell? The book also features interviews with two professionals whose work has brought them face to face with bereavement - a doctor and a funeral director. In response to David's searching questions, they offer candid first-hand accounts and insights about the challenges faced by the Christian in secular work environments and reveal ways in which their faith informs their view of mortality. They also share their observations about the effects of bereavement while revealing how their belief in the life to come provides solace. David also responds to a series of questions from other Christians about the afterlife. In doing so, he goes straight to the heart of the Christian faith, often covering subjects that are overlooked or ignored in churches. Some of his answers may surprise you! This book an invaluable resource for newcomers to the faith and more mature Christians alike.
