Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life on the Ocean, or Thirty-Five Years at Sea: Being the Personal Adventures of the Author All the incidents of this book are facts from my own personal experience during thirty-five years passed upon the ocean. Of that time I spent four years on board of a whaleship, and thirty-one years on board of merchant vessels. I do not pretend to be a literary character; but I do claim to know how to rig and sail a ship, and to be familiar with whatever is connected with a nautical life. Book excerpt: A Silent Spring for oceans, written by "the Rachel Carson of the fish world" (The New York Times) Who can forget the sense of wonder with which they discovered the creatures of the deep? In this vibrant hymn to the sea, Callum Roberts—one of the world’s foremost conservation biologists—leads readers on a fascinating tour of mankind’s relationship to the sea, from the earliest traces of water on earth to the oceans as we know them today. In the process, Roberts looks at how the taming of the oceans has shaped human civilization and affected marine life. We have always been fish eaters, from the dawn of civilization, but in the last twenty years we have transformed the oceans beyond recognition. Putting our exploitation of the seas into historical context, Roberts offers a devastating account of the impact of modern fishing techniques, pollution, and climate change, and reveals what it would take to steer the right course while there is still time. Like Four Fish and The Omnivore’s Dilemma, The Ocean of Life takes a long view to tell a story in which each one of us has a role to play.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life on the Ocean, or Twenty Years at Sea: Being the Personal Adventures of the Author The reader will perceive that, in the narrative itself, as well as in the dialogues introduced, the author has preserved the maritime technicalities, and rough mode of expression, peculiar to sailors; his chief object, in fact, has been to exhibit a true picture of life on the ocean, blending with it those wholesome moral and religious truths, which should be inculcated upon the minds of seamen. That it may more forcibly serve as a mirror for his brother tars, wherein they may view their defects as well as their excellences; that a fresh impulse may be given to the efforts of the Christian community H1 behalf of the spiritual wants of those who go down to the sea in ships; and that it may prove a source of recreation and (he humbly trusts) of instruction to all who may honor him by classing themselves among his readers, is the sincere desire of the author. Book excerpt: Captain Paddack first went to sea in 1847 where he spent four years on a whaling boat and the next 31 years on merchant vessels. During his 35 years at sea, Paddack traversed much of the world, often accompanied by his wife and children. Life on the Ocean reads like part travelogue, part ship's diary, and part personal journal. The topics he covers are as diverse as whale fishery, native dentistry, how to make coconut oil, seasickness, officers' duties, seal hunting, discipline on board ship, "colored" crews, storms, wrecks, murders, and mishaps at sea. As captain of various merchant ships, he took oil to Cork, coal to Rio de Janeiro, and sugar to Baltimore. Among the other cargo loads he transported around the globe were ice, lumber, cotton, and even cabbage. While Paddack does not lay any claim to a "literary character" he is "familiar with whatever is connected with a nautical life." Not having a literary bent is a boon in Paddack's case as the resulting prose is clear, informative, and entertaining. Indeed Paddack's ability to write about the extraordinary and the ordinary with equal equanimity is striking. In one breath he can describe the childhood heartbreak of his young daughter after accidentally dropping her favorite doll overboard. In the next breath, he describes how, after a toddler son dies at sea in route to Genoa, he and his wife find themselves unable to bear the idea of a burial at sea and so place the child's body in a barrel and cover it with pickling salt. Aptly named, Life on the Ocean provides a rare window onto the experiences that constituted what must have been the relatively 'normal' life of a ship's captain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four volumes of history and biography for fans of the Aubrey-Maturin novels, with lore on the Royal Navy and much more. What is a sandgrouse, and where does it live? What are the medical properties of lignum vitae, and how did Stephen Maturin use it to repair his viola? Who is Adm. Lord Keith, and why is his wife so friendly with Capt. Jack Aubrey? More than any other contemporary author, Patrick O’Brian knew the past. His twenty Aubrey–Maturin novels, beginning with Master and Commander (1969), are distinguished by deep characterization, heart-stopping naval combat, and an attention to detail that enriches and enlivens his stories. In the revised edition of A Sea of Words, Dean King and his collaborators dive into Jack Aubrey’s world. In the revised edition of Harbors and High Seas, King details not just where Aubrey and Maturin went, but how they got there. Packed with maps and illustrations from the greatest age of sail, it is an incomparable reference for devotees of O’Brian’s novels and anyone who has dreamed of climbing aboard a warship, as well as a captivating portrait of life on the sea during a time when nothing stood between man and ocean but grit, daring, and a few creaking planks of wood. At the dawn of the nineteenth century, the British navy was the mightiest instrument of war the world had ever known. The Royal Navy patrolled the seas from India to the Caribbean, connecting an empire with footholds in every corner of the earth. Such a massive navy required the service of more than 100,000 men—from officers to deckhands to surgeons. Their stories are collected in Every Man Will Do His Duty. The inspiration for the bestselling novels of Patrick O’Brian and C. S. Forester, these twenty-two memoirs and diaries, edited by Dean King, provide a true portrait of life aboard British warships during one of the most significant eras of world history. Patrick O’Brian was well into his seventies when the world fell in love with his greatest creation: the maritime adventures of Royal Navy Capt. Jack Aubrey and ship’s surgeon Stephen Maturin. But despite his fame, little detail was available about the life of the reclusive author, whose mysterious past King uncovers in this groundbreaking biography. King traces O’Brian’s personal history from his beginnings as a London-born Protestant named Richard Patrick Russ to his tortured relationship with his first wife and child to his emergence from World War II with the entirely new identity under which he would publish twenty volumes in the Aubrey–Maturin series. What King unearths is a life no less thrilling than the seafaring world of O’Brian’s imagination. Patrick O’Brian: A Life Revealed is a penetrating and insightful examination of one of the modern world’s most acclaimed historical novelists.
