Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of the Rev. Henry Harbaugh, D.D Dr. Harbaugh was a typical Pennsylvania German. The dialect and its range of ideas he acquired at his mother's knee and from the companions of his child hood and youth. His powers of work and his love of fun were developed under the tutelage of the Old farm and under the influence Of its customs, traditions and forms Of speech. He was thoroughly familiar with the homes and habits, the social and religious life of the Pennsylvanians of German ancestry. He knew their merits, foibles, and Shortcomings, their peculiar ways and superstitions, their highest hopes and noblest emotions. He admired their frankness and simplicity, their thrift and industry, their honesty and integrity. He shared their fondness for good meals, their sense Of humor, their hatred Of every form of sham and hum bug. He summed up in his personality and exem plified in his life the best characteristics of these people. Of all the men whom they have given to the world, he was the most gifted and the most productive from a literary point Of View. Even in his criticism of the common school system he reflected their Views, their fears and their prejudices. Had he lived to our time he would have accepted, as a fixed fact among all civilized nations, schools supported by taxation; and he would have been untiring in the eflort to put into these schools teachers Of the highest skill and the most unblemished character. Book Synopsis Serious Nonsense by : William W. Donner
Download or read book Serious Nonsense written by William W. Donner and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2016-05-15 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Versammlinge—community events filled with songs, performances, speeches, and skits that celebrate Pennsylvania German heritage and culture—are held entirely in the Pennsylvania German Deitsch language. Some, the “groundhog lodges,” feature a ceremony honoring the groundhog, while others do not. These unique meetings, expressions of a distinctive ethnic identity in the context of a rapidly changing society, have become a traditional mainstay among Pennsylvania Germans who have worked to preserve their language and culture into the twenty-first century. Serious Nonsense introduces readers to Pennsylvania German cultural practices that tourists rarely see and that outsiders, including most scholars, rarely learn about. The book explores the origins of the versammlinge and details the practice’s significance since the 1930s, when the first meetings of the Pennsylvania German groundhog lodges were held. Much as they did then, versammlinge today follow a pattern of prayers, patriotism, and speeches extolling values associated with Pennsylvania German identity, as well as theatrical and oral events that humorously contrast a simpler past with a more complex and confusing present. And the groundhog lodges feature one Pennsylvania German tradition that has become familiar in popular culture: groundhog weather prognostication.
Book Synopsis Gettysburg Religion by : Steve Longenecker
Download or read book Gettysburg Religion written by Steve Longenecker and published by Fordham University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the borderland between freedom and slavery, Gettysburg remains among the most legendary Civil War landmarks. A century and a half after the great battle, Cemetery Hill, the Seminary and its ridge, and the Peach Orchard remain powerful memories for their embodiment of the small-town North and their ability to touch themes vital to nineteenth-century religion. During this period, three patterns became particularly prominent: refinement, diversity, and war. In Gettysburg Religion, author Steve Longenecker explores the religious history of antebellum and Civil War–era Gettysburg, shedding light on the remarkable diversity of American religion and the intricate ways it interacted with the broader culture. Longenecker argues that Gettysburg religion revealed much about larger American society and about how trends in the Border North mirrored national developments. In many ways, Gettysburg and its surrounding Border North religion belonged to the future and signaled a coming pattern for modern America.
