Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of St. Brigid: Virgin; First Abbess of Kildare, Special Patroness of Kildare Diocese, and General Patroness of Ireland The publication of a full and critical Life of Ireland's Virgin Patroness had long been desired, by the clergy and laity of our country. While preparing the following biography, as a leading feature in his " Lives of the Irish Saints," the author was urged, by many devout clients of St. Frigid, to issue it in a separate form, to satisfy the wants and wishes of numerous kind friends. Not alone members of religious communities, under the special patronage of this holy virgin, and pastors or teachers, whose churches or educational institutions have been placed under her invocation, will be afforded a better opportunity, for becoming acquainted with her surpassing virtues and miracles, through this medium; but, even the general public can learn such particulars of her Life, as may serve still more to extend the love and veneration, due to her memory and merits. Abroad, as well as at home, the Irish race has never ceased to regard this holy virgin as a bright example of the active and contemplative life, united in a purity of purpose and an energy of will, which enabled her to confer countless blessings, on the country of her birth, and during the period when she flourished; but, even in our own times, and to the most remote parts of the earth, her fame has been diffused; while, thousands of Erin's daughters, who have received her name in baptism, and who have assumed it at Confirmation-not to speak of the numbers who have chosen to be called by it in the hallowed retirement of the cloister-are justly proud of and grateful fot that distinction and those spiritual advantages, which are inseparably connected with a pious and faithful regard, for the efficacy of her intercession. After our illustrious Apostle, St. Patrick, no other Irish saint, probably, has secured a greater depth of affection and reverence, in the hearts of our people, than she, who, in so special a manner, has been designated, "the Mary 01 Erin." At a time, when our Island was just emerging from the darkness o: heathen superstition, she obtained heavenly monitions and inspiration, while eagerly receiving the teaching and impulse that glorious missionary so trium phantly proclaimed and imparted to a believing nation. Seldom, if ever, has the Church witnessed more glorious and peaceful conquests than these effected through the arguments and preaching of St. Patrick; while, among all hi: distinguished converts, none appear to move in more radiant light, than the nobly bom and predestined child of grace, St. brigid. Book excerpt: 'The Life of Saint Bridget, Virgin and Abbess' is a book about Saint Brigid of Kildare or Brigid of Ireland, who is the patroness saint (or 'mother saint') of Ireland, and one of its three national saints along with Patrick and Columba. According to medieval Irish hagiographies, she was an abbess who founded several convents of nuns, most notably that of Kildare, which was one of the most important in Ireland. She is patroness of many things, including poetry, learning, healing, protection, blacksmithing, livestock and dairy production. The saint shares her name with a Celtic goddess. Brigid's feast day is 1 February, which was originally a pre-Christian festival called Imbolc, marking the beginning of spring.

Book excerpt: This book consists of The Revelations of Saint Bridget of Sweden, Book 11: "The Sermon of the Angel," on Salvation History from Adam and Eve to Christ, including much on the Blessed Virgin Mary; Book 12: "Four Prayers" which were divinely revealed to Saint Bridget; plus The 15 "Magnificent Prayers of Saint Bridget" to Our Suffering Lord Jesus Christ. The reader will find in it a fruitful source of prayer and meditation, as have so many people throughout the centuries since they were first revealed to the holy mystic and visionary. See also "The Revelations of St Bridget and Church Reform" and the edited "Revelations of Saint Bridget of Sweden: Books 1-5." St Bridget (or "Birgitta") of Sweden was born in June 1303 in the castle of Finsta near Uppsala in Sweden; her father Birgen Persson was the governor of the region of Upplan, her mother Ingeborga was also of noble lineage. Bridget married very early, had several children, and then in 1341, Bridget and her husband decided to celebrate their Silver Anniversary by going on a pilgrimage to Santiago of Compostella. This event marks a decisive turning point in the life of the two spouses, who for some time were already living their matrimony in chastity. During the return trip, Ulf, her husband, decided to embrace the religious life and was received into the Cistercian Abbey of Alvastra, where he died only a few years later. Bridget, having completed her mission as wife and mother, decided to transfer herself to an outbuilding to the monastery at Alvastra, where she remained for almost three years until 1346. It was the beginning of the most extraordinary phase of her life; after a period of austerity and of meditation on the Divine Mysteries of the Passion of the Lord and the Sorrows and Glories of the Virgin, she began to have visions of Christ, Who in one of these visions elects her "Messenger of the Great Lord." To her spiritual directors, such as Fr. Matthias, Bridget dictated her famous "Revelations," sublime intuitions and supernatural illuminations, which she had all her life and were then collected in eight volumes. Afterwards she went to Rome and here, under the dictation of an Angel, wrote "The Hymn of the Angel" or "Angelic Sermon." It deals with twenty-one Letters to be read every day of the week during the morning Masses in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Saint Bridget, during one Eucharistic celebration, has a revelation of the Angels in Eucharistic Adoration: "After the priest had pronounced the divine words over the bread, it seemed to me that that same bread took on three figures, although it remained in the hands of the priest. That Bread became a living Lamb, in the Lamb was seen the face of a man and on the inside and on the outside of the Lamb and of that face there was an ardent flame. As I was watching the face with attention, without averting my eyes, in it I saw the Lamb. And looking at the Lamb I also saw that same face in the Lamb. A Crowned Virgin was sitting with the Lamb and all the Angels were attending to her; the Lamb emanated a marvelous splendor. Also the multitude of holy souls was so numerous that my eyes could not contain it all, not in length, not in width, not in depth" (Book 8, 54). Later on, the Saint is a witness to a conversation between Jesus and the Virgin about the creation of the world and of all things visible and invisible. Among these the Angels, who at the moment of their creation, in complete liberty, were given the choice either to accept God and His love, or to refuse Him.

Book excerpt: Rich in historical detail, Heather Terrell’s mesmerizing novel Brigid of Kildare is the story of the revolutionary Saint Brigid and the discovery of the oldest illuminated manuscript in the annals of the Church, a manuscript that contains an astonishing secret history. Fifth-century Ireland: Brigid is Ireland’s first and only female priest and bishop. Followers flock to her Kildare abbey and scriptorium. Hearing accounts of Brigid’s power, the Church deems her a threat and sends Decius, a Roman priest and scribe, on a secret mission to collect proof of Brigid’s heresy. As Decius records the unorthodox practices of Brigid and her abbey, he becomes intrigued by her. When Brigid assigns Decius a holy task—to create the most important and sacred manuscript ever made—he finds himself at odds with his original mission and faces the most difficult decision of his life. Modern day: Alexandra Patterson, an appraiser of medieval relics, has been summoned to Kildare to examine a reliquary box believed to belong to Saint Brigid. Hidden within the sacred box is the most beautiful illuminated manuscript Alex has ever seen. But even more extraordinary is the contents of the manuscript’s vellum pages, which may have dire repercussions for the Catholic Church and could very well rewrite the origins of Christianity.

Book excerpt: Brigid of Kildare, Ireland, is uniquely venerated as both a goddess and a saint throughout Ireland, Europe and the USA. Often referred to as Mary of the Gael and considered the second most important saint in Ireland after St Patrick, her widespread popularity has led to the creation of more traditional activities than any other saint; some of which survive to this day. As a result of original historical and archaeological research Brian Wright provides a fascinating insight into this unique and mysterious figure. This book uncovers for the first time when and by whom the goddess was 'conceived' and evidence that St Brigid was a real person. It also explains how she 'became' a saint, her historical links with the unification of Ireland under a High King in the first century and discusses in depth her first documented visit to England in AD 488. Today, Brigid remains strongly connected with the fertility of crops, animals and humans and is celebrated throughout the world via the continuation of customs, ceremonies and relics with origins dating back to pre-Christian times. Using a combination of early Celtic history, archaeology, tradition and folklore from Ireland, Britain and other countries, this comprehensive study unravels the mystery of a goddess and saint previously complicated by the passage of time.
