Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Robert, Marquis of Salisbury, Vol. 4: 1887-1892 IT was a troubled Europe, east and west, which faced Lord Salisbury on his return to the Foreign Office in January, 1887. With the larger questions Of policy raised by the kidnapping and abdication of Prince Alexander Of Bulgaria, in the previous September, he had already had to deal as Prime Minister.1 The abdication had been a disheartening sequel to the struggle which he had waged on the Prince's behalf in the preceding year; the outburst Of indignation which the kidnapping had aroused throughout the principality and the enthusiasm which had greeted the Prince on his return, had left his surrender an unexplained catastrophe. Book Synopsis Lord Salisbury and Nationality in the East by : Shih-tsung Wang
Download or read book Lord Salisbury and Nationality in the East written by Shih-tsung Wang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-07 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explains how Salisbury viewed cultural conflicts between the East and the West, how he treated Oriental nationality and nationalist aspirations in British dominions in the East, and how he directed British policy in the Eastern world in a time when the Western Powers were plunging into a struggle for spheres of predominance. In pursuit of British imperial interests, Salisbury was outwardly determined, but acutely aware of the inherent moral conflicts. He understood that the expansion of Europe was inevitable, but, taking into account the rights and feelings of the Eastern nations, he endeavoured to reduce his country’s impact on the peoples subjected to British control. Hence his preference for the generally peaceful invasion effected by informal empire. Following an introductory discussion on Salisbury’s ideas and policy, particularly in the light of his treatment of nationality, this research investigates his record in India, Turkey, Egypt, and China to argue for a strikingly sympathetic attitude in his dealings with Eastern nationalities. While it is a truism to say that British imperialism was coloured by Christian beliefs and liberal principles, it has not yet been appreciated how far Salisbury succeeded in reconciling the moral and practical demands of Western civilization upon itself with the requirements of power.

Download or read book At Power's Elbow written by Andrew Blick and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discreet, inconspicuous, prudent... The perfect prime-ministerial aide is always in the background, a low-profile figure unknown outside the Westminster bubble. Unfortunately, reality often falls short of the ideal; for as long as the office of Prime Minister has existed, its occupants have been supported by a range of colourful individuals who have garnered public interest, controversy and criticism. At Power's Elbow tells their story for the first time, uncovering the truth behind three centuries' worth of prime ministers and their aides. Its subjects range from the early media-managers and election-fixers of Sir Robert Walpole, to the teams supporting the wartime premierships of David Lloyd George and Winston Churchill, to the semi-official 'Department of the Prime Minister' established under Tony Blair. Along the way, Andrew Blick and George Jones demonstrate how these essential advisers can be a source of both solace and strife to their chiefs, solving and causing problems in almost equal measure. Above all, they reveal how a Prime Minister's approach to his staff can define his premiership, for better or for worse.
