Excerpt from the book: "Greater than that of any or all of these combined, is the purpose of him who goes to open paths of fresh conquest for the kingdom of Christ and to carry the message of salvation to nations that for ages have not felt the throb of spiritual life. A glance at the missionary field in Persia will give the reader an impression of its present prosperous condition. The work begun and for years successfully carried forward by the American Board, was in 1871 transferred to the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church. The missions of this Board in Persia now comprise five stations and several outstations."

Justin Perkins, D.D: Pioneer Missionary to Persia The object of this volume is to reflect the character and work of my honored father, the late Rev. Justin Perkins, D. D., pioneer missionary to Persia. This work is attempted in response to the desire of many friends in the United States, as well as in Persia. Friends of missions in England, Germany and elsewhere will be glad to renew their memories of the subject of this biography. Not long ago the Jubilee of the mission to Persia was observed. While there is cause of rejoicing over present results, a tribute to the memory of the earliest member of that mission becomes the more appropriate. It is my hope that the following chapters will serve to increase interest in the cause of missions, and especially as carried forward in Persia, where thirty-seven years of an earnest life were consecrated to the Master's service. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anglican and Reformed Approaches in India and the Near East, 1800-1938 This book aims to offer the reader access to the treasury of experience and literature resulting from nineteenth- and twentieth-century missions to Muslims. Based on the author's doctoral work completed at the University of Edinburgh, this research also grew out of the author's mission service in the Near East. This volume represents research completed under the direction of professors W. M. Watt and A. C. Cheyne. Christian Mission to Muslims will prove of good encouragement to the host of Christ's disciples living and witnessing among their Muslim neighbors. This work is consistent with the larger biblical vision granted by God through prophet, Messiah, and apostle--a vision voiced in the Abrahamic prayer and the motto of the Arabian Mission: "O that Ishmael might live in thy sight!" (Gen 17:18); in Jesus's words: "I lay down my life for the sheep. And I have other sheep that are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will heed my voice" (John 10:15-16); and in the abiding hope of Revelation 11:15: "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign for ever and ever."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In celebration of the 200th anniversary of Amherst College, a group of scholars and alumni explore the school's substantial past in this volume. Amherst in the World tells the story of how an institution that was founded to train Protestant ministers began educating new generations of industrialists, bankers, and political leaders with the decline in missionary ambitions after the Civil War. The contributors trace how what was a largely white school throughout the interwar years begins diversifying its student demographics after World War II and the War in Vietnam. The histories told here illuminate how Amherst has contended with slavery, wars, religion, coeducation, science, curriculum, town and gown relations, governance, and funding during its two centuries of existence. Through Amherst's engagement with educational improvement in light of these historical undulations, it continually affirms both the vitality and the utility of a liberal arts education. Contributions by Martha Saxton, Gary J. Kornblith, David W. Wills, Frederick E. Hoxie, Trent Maxey, Nicholas L. Syrett, Wendy H. Bergoffen, Rick López, Matthew Alexander Randolph, Daniel Levinson Wilk, K. Ian Shin, David S. Reynolds, Jane F. Thrailkill, Julie Dobrow, Richard F. Teichgraeber III, Debby Applegate, Michael E. Book excerpt: This book tells for the first time, in rich detail, and without apologetics, what Americans have done, in the voluntary sector and often without official sanction, for human welfare in all parts of the world. Beneath the currently fashionable rhetoric of anti-colonialism is the story of people who have aided victims of natural disasters such as famines and earthquakes, and what they contributed to such agencies of cultural and social life as libraries, schools, and colleges. The work of an assortment of individuals, from missionaries to foundation executives, has advanced public health, international education, and technical assistance to the Third World. These people have also assisted in relief and relocation of refugees, displaced persons, and those who suffered religious and racial persecution. These activities were especially noteworthy following the two world wars of the twentieth century. The United States established great foundations—Carnegie, Rosenwald, Phelps-Stokes, Rockefeller, Ford, among others—which provided another face of capitalist accumulation to those in backward economic regions and those suffering political persecution. These were meshed with religious relief agencies of all denominations that also contributed to make possible what Arnold Toynbee called “a century in which civilized man made the benefits of progress available to all mankind.” This is a massive work requiring more than five years of research, drawing upon a wide array of hitherto unavailable materials and source documents.
