Smith, on his death-bed, charged me solemnly concerning it. Its production has therefore been both a work of duty and affection. Its kind acceptance by the Saints, and fair consideration by the world at large will be my ample reward. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Joseph Smith, the Prophet Joseph and Hyrum are now dead; but, like the first martyr they yet speak. Their united voice is one of testi mony, admonition and warning to the world. They lived men of God. They died pure and holy, sealing their testimony with their blood. No men ever suffered greater persecution than they; no men were ever less understood by their generation. It is in the hope that the Saints may find joy in read ing of their beloved Prophet and Patriarch, and that the world may judge more fairly of these benefactors of man kind, that this book is written. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History of Joseph Smith, by His Mother is a biography of Joseph Smith, founder of the Latter Day Saint movement, according to his mother, Lucy Mack Smith. Shortly following the death of Joseph Smith in 1844, and into 1845, Lucy Mack Smith dictated her recollections and family story to Nauvoo schoolteacher Martha Jane Coray who compiled these books of notes and other sources into a manuscript. Publication of the book came with the great controversy. After its publication, Brigham Young declared the book to be a "tissue of lies" and wanted corrections made. Young possibly opposed the book because of his own conflicts with its publisher, Orson Pratt. Lucy Smith portrayed the Smith family as the legitimate leaders of the church, which Young may also have seen as a challenge to his leadership.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Prophet Joseph This history of the Prophet Joseph Smith, originally entitled, The History of Mother Smith, by Herself, was written at the dictation of Lucy Smith, mother of the Prophet, by Mrs. Martha Jane Knowlton Coray who acted as her amanuensis. It was taken from the words of Mother Smith and dictated from memory mostly, but she also made use of such historical memoranda of the events related as were within her reach. Of the original manuscript one copy was taken which was left with Lucy Smith, while the original was retained by the writer. This original, Mrs. Coray held in her possession until her arrival in Utah, when she subsequently deposited a copy of it with President Brigham Young. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Questions and Answers on the Life and Mission of the Prophet Joseph Smith The Deseret Sunday School Union takes pleasure in presenting to its friends and co-workers this little volume of Questions and Answers on the Life and Mission of Joseph Smith, the great Prophet of the latter-day dispensation. Great care has been taken by the Publishing Committee to avoid errors, but should any appear, every effort will be made to correct them in future editions. Necessarily, in a work of this size many items of much value have been left out. If ever thing had been inserted that might interest the Saints, the volume would have been so large as to be unsuitable for the purpose intended, and the cost so high as to limit its circulation. It may be well to add that all the literary labor, compilation, etc., has been done by members of the Committee, without charge or payment of any kind, and any profit that may arise from its publication will be devoted by the Union to the preparation and publication of still other works, for which there is a demand among the laborers in our Sunday schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Prophet: History of Joseph Smith; Written for Young People In sending out this little work, the author hopes with all his heart that he has made interesting and instructive a subject that has been a source of inspiration to him. The book was called forth mainly by the need of the Sunday Schools for such a publication. In many schools the author's Life of Joseph Smith is being used, but that book was not written as a text-book for children. This little volume can be put to such a use, and can be placed in the hands of the children themselves. Teachers may gather new material to give them from any source they desire, but the children have a foundation furnished here. In this book there may be words that a child of ten or twelve years will not understand; but the child's vocabulary would never grow if he met no new words. However the author believes there are few if any places where an intelligent child cannot gather the meaning from the context. The work is purposely arranged in forty chapters, as that is the number of Sundays, fast-days excluded, in the year; but if possible, a little time once a month should be given to review work. Special attention is called to the chapter headings, which may be used as the topics on which different members of the class may prepare to talk. The maps and illustrations will be found valuable in aiding the child's understanding. While these suggestions apply to the use of this volume as a text-book, it has also been the aim to have the history suitable for general reading as well. It has been the author's desire through life to aid in giving the young Latter-day Saints so much that is good and pure in literature that they will have no excuse for reading that which is trashy or improper. Anathoth was one of the thirteen cities that were given to the priests in the time of Joshua. It was situated about three miles north of Jerusalem, within the limits of the tribe of Benjamin. Jeremiah was thus of the sacerdotal or priestly race. His fathers name was Hilkiah. Some have supposed that this was the high-priest who found the book of the law in the temple, in the eighteenth year of the reign of Josiah: but this is not probable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Joseph Smith, Vol. 1: The Prophet, His Family and His Friends, a Study Based on Facts and Documents We have the meanest devils on the earth in our midst and we intend to keep them, for we have use for them. I have many a time dared the world to produce as mean devils as we can; we can beat them at anything. We have the greatest and smoothest liars in the world, the cunningest and most adroit thieves and any other shade of character that you can mention. We can pick out elders in Israel right here who can beat the world at gambling; who can handle the cards; who can cut and shuffle them with the smartest rogue on the face of God's foot-stool. I can produce elders here who can shave their smartest shavers and take their money from them. We can beat the world at any game. We can beat them because we have men here that live in the light of the Lord; that have the holy priest hood and hold the keys of the Kingdom of God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fate of the Persecutors of the Prophet Joseph Smith: Being a Compilation of Historical Data on the Personal Testimony of Joseph Smith, His Greatness, His Persecutions and Prosecutions, Conspiracies Against His Life, His Imprisonments, His Martyrdom, His Funeral and Burial, the Trial of His Murderers The Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ as taught by the Prophet Joseph Smith is the gospel of love and forgiveness. The material found within this cover does not represent hate of the persecutors of the people but sorrow for them. They serve, however, as a warning to those who without proper investigation allow their prejudices to lead them to actions contrary to the spirit of right and justice. Certainly this book will be read with challenging interest by the members of the Church and by others.
