I hope the obligations are duly noted in the text, but some are so conspicuous as to call for a special reference. First, I must name the members of the Bishop's family - Mrs. Percival, The Rev. Preb. L. J. Percival, and Mrs. Johnson who have given me every kind of help and support. For the earlier chapters I have received invaluable assistance from Canon J. M. Wilson, Sir Herbert Warren, Bishop Robertson, and Mr. G. F. Bradby. The chapters dealing With the Hereford episcopate I could not have handled at all without the aid of Canon Bannister, who supplied me with a great quantity of documents admirably sorted. He was its first Bishop in the English line, and to him for fifty years fell the duty of guiding its growth and presiding over its councils. When he died in 1836, he was so well known that it was not thought necessary to write a biography in detail, and Dr. Wilson's Memoir is the only attempt that has been made to set forth his individual career. Bishop Perry has rendered invaluable service in gathering up and putting into print the docu mentary ecclesiastical history of the period; but, so far as I know, this is the first attempt that has been made to give a personal portrait of this great Church leader, and to show what part he had in the civil and religious life of the times in which he lived. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Cardinal Cheverus, Archbishop of Bordeaux, and Formerly Bishop of Boston, in Massachusetts IN the preparation of the present work, I have proceeded throughout on the principle, that the most scrupulous fidelity to the original is the first duty of a translator. Accordingly, it has been my endeavour, not only to preserve the general sense and spirit of each sentence, but, so far as the genius of languages so dissimilar would admit, to present in the English a translation in all respects literally conforming to the French. I should state, however, that, where quo tations from our own writers are introduced, i have not deemed it my duty to retranslate the French, but, wherever the original English was accessible, I have preferred always to cite it directly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Gilbert Haven, Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church When Bishop Haven died the call for a biography was very gen eral. Two well known editors and one college president offered their services for the preparation of such a work. It was every-where assumed that such a life must be carefully portrayed. Hence the literary executors thought themselves bound to undertake their appointed task. When a very imperfect life was issued by a Boston firm. The only option was to let that book have the field or to try to produce something different. The materials for such a volume are so ample and interesting that some features of the book were determined thereby. All could not be used, and the task was to select and combine such matter as would best tell the story and illustrate the traits of Gilbert Haven. The choice of these materials has not been easy, nor can one atter himself that in all cases the best selection has been made. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of Methodist Bishops Istory is, only a compilation of biographies, and the true study of history is from the stand-point of the men who make it. But because it is philosophical, it is none the less pleasurable thus to study it. There is enough of romance in the personal struggles, ambitions and successes, disappointments and defeats, of the historic men in the world, to exhilarate the mind through a deal of otherwise dull and distasteful details concerning simple events. And some such romance must go into the account of ecclesiastical events, or Church history will find few persons either pious enough or studious enough to read it, much less to study' it. The histories which are the most read are the biographies which are the best written. In these Life Sketches we have furnished the reader with a history of Episcopal Methodism from the stand-point of the men who have come down to us from the beginning of the Societies, and who, because of their position and influence, have not only had much to do with formulating the doctrines and polity of the Church, but were themselves personally related to preachers and people throughout the connection. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life-Story of Rev. Davis Wasgatt Clark, D.D: Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Compiled From Original Sources To write the biography of a recently deceased person is always a difficult and delicate task. Time, the great arbiter and the only reliable judge of what ought to be remembered or forgotten, has not yet made his decisions. The newly gathered fruits are yet crude, nor can it be determined which will mellow into richness and which will decay in the process. It seems to be conceded that none but a friendly hand should compose such a work, and yet that very friendship may inter fere with the cool and unprejudiced action of the writer. But when not only the individual in his actions and character is made the theme of disquisition, but the whole field of his relations are contemplated, and the related things in their connection with the subject of the memoir, the difficulty becomes greater in pr0portion.to the greatness of the theme. Nearly all subjects of public interest have their partisan aspects, and upon any contemporary subject all who may be sufficiently interested tr read a book relating to it may be supposed to belong to one or the other party. To discuss to the satisfaction of all parties the questions that must come under notice in such a work is quite impossible. If the writer pursues only the truth, without fear or favor, even were he infallible in his determinations, he can satisfy only those with whom he may agree. If he com promises the existing differences - the favorite method with some - he would probably offend all, and at the same time vio late truth and right, for it is far from being the case that these always lie midway between extremes. Such are some of the difficulties to be encountered in such a work as this before us. How well the writer has managed them will be seen by a peru sal of the volume itself.
