Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Benedict Arnold: His Patriotism and His Treason Standing, not very long ago, on the battle-field of Saratoga, near where Benedict Arnold was grievously wounded, as he led as gallant a charge as was ever made, I realized that if he had died on that bloody field how brilliant would have been his record as a soldier and patriot. His name, associated with those of Montgomery and Warren, would have been canonized in American history, and his faults and foibles would have been lost in the blaze of glory which would have encircled it. Standing there, I was impressed with the injustice which has been done him; not in condemning his treason, but in ignoring his virtues, and in refusing to recognize his great services; and I resolved to tell the story of his life truthfully and fairly. Yet conscious of the deep and merited and universal prejudice existing against him, I fear the American people will listen with some impatience to such a story of his life. He was not so black as he has been painted. I have no desire to change the indignation and resentment felt towards him for his treason. I can neither excuse nor extenuate his guilt. But I wish to make known his patriotic services, his sufferings, heroism, and the wrongs which drove him to desperation, and converted one of the most heroic men of a heroic age to the perpetration of an unpardonable crime. Book Synopsis The Real Benedict Arnold by : Jim Murphy
Download or read book The Real Benedict Arnold written by Jim Murphy and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2007 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every account of the American Revolution mentions Benedict Arnold and brands him--correctly--as a traitor. There's no question that Arnold, an American army officer, switched his loyalty to the British side. Over the years, however, historians, partisans, and gossips have added to Arnold's unsavory reputation by distorting, embroidering, or simply ignoring factual details. In this informed and thoughtful account, Jim Murphy goes in search of the real man behind the "traitor" label, rumors, and folktales that became part of the Benedict Arnold legend. Drawing on Arnold's few surviving writings and on the letters, memoirs, and political documents of his contemporaries, Murphy builds a fascinating portrait of a brilliant man, consistently undervalued by his peers, who made a choice that continues to reverberate through American history. Dramatic accounts of crucial battles and political maneuvers round out this lively biography of a patriot who could have been a hero.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Benedict Arnold: A Biography A traitor is despised of all the world. I have stated in my preface, that is is the design of the Biographical Series of which this volume is a part, to "furnish from the pages of the world's history a few examples of true manhood, lofty purpose, and persevering effort, such as may be safely held up either for the admiration or emulation of the youth of the present day;" and I am sure it is needless to add that the life of Benedict Arnold offers no such example. On the contrary, his memory will be detested as long as time shall help to keep it alive. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Benedict Arnold is one of America's most notorious traitors, but his story is more complicated than the simple narrative of treachery that dominates popular accounts. George Canning Hill's biography offers a nuanced and compelling portrait of Arnold, exploring his early heroism in the American Revolution, his growing disillusionment with the new nation, and ultimately his decision to join the British. Hill's work is a masterful retelling of a complex and often tragic life.
