Download or read book Writing Labour written by Mohammad Talib and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-10-06 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In most globalizing economies, workers engaged in the informal sector occupy the lowest rungs of society. This book examines one such group—stone quarry workers located beyond the expanding rim of south Delhi and beneath the radar of effective law and policy. Drawing upon extensive case studies and personal narratives of this labouring class, Talib focuses on their inner world and interprets their life stories. He records the dwindling oral tradition of these people and brings to the fore the dynamics of survival. Questioning the discourse that views this group as passive objects, the book portrays them as active negotiators of their own circumstances. This work is crucial to an understanding of the current debates on labour and development studies. It presents the workers' story of social exclusion and struggle for survival, which is rarely heard amidst the counter narratives of the formal sector's economic boom.

Book Synopsis Labours old and new by : Stephen Meredith
Download or read book Labours old and new written by Stephen Meredith and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is concerned with the ‘Old’ Labour right at a critical juncture of social democratic and Labour politics. It attempts to understand the complex transition from so-called ‘Old Right’ to ‘New Right’ or ‘New Labour’, and locates at least some of the roots of the latter in the complexity, tensions and fragmentation of the former during the ‘lean’ years of social democracy in the 1970s. The analysis addresses both the short and long-term implications of the emerging ideological, organisational and political complexity and divisions of the parliamentary Labour right and Labour revisionism, previously concealed within the loosely adhesive post-war framework of Keynesian reformist social democracy. It establishes the extent to which ‘New’ Labour is a legatee of at least some elements of the disparate and discordant Labour right and tensions of social democratic revisionism in the 1970s. In so doing, it advances our understanding of a key moment in the development of social democracy and the making of the contemporary British Labour Party.

Download or read book After the Car written by Kingsley Dennis and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-05-20 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is difficult to imagine a world without the car, and yet that is exactly what Dennis and Urry set out to do in this provocative new book. They argue that the days of the car are numbered: powerful forces around the world are undermining the car system and will usher in a new transport system sometime in the next few decades. Specifically, the book examines how several major processes are shaping the future of how we travel, including: Global warming and its many global consequences Peaking of oil supplies Increased digitisation of many aspects of economic and social life Massive global population increases The authors look at changes in technology, policy, economy and society, and make a convincing argument for a future where, by necessity, the present car system will be re-designed and re-engineered. Yet the book also suggests that there are some hugely bleak dilemmas facing the twenty first century. The authors lay out what they consider to be possible 'post-car' future scenarios. These they describe as 'local sustainability', 'regional warlordism' and 'digital networks of control'. After The Car will be of great interest to planners, policy makers, social scientists, futurologists, those working in industry, as well as general readers. Some have described the 20th Century as the century of the car. Now that century has come to a close – and things are about to change.
