Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Unionid Mussels in Kansas The manufacture of buttons from the shells of fresh-water mussels began about 1891. In 1912 the income from this industry amounted to approximately yearly. With the advent of plastics, the shell industry declined sharply; today, fresh-water mussel shells are used primarily for novelty work, such as charm bracelets, hat pins, belt buckles, and fancy buttons. In 1912, approximately tons of shells were removed from the Neosho River in Kansas; this amounted to 17 per cent of the pearly products for the United States in that year. In the year 1960 in Kansas there was no commercial harvesting of unionid shells. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Karl von Frisch is reported to have turned the pages more quickly in texts where bivalves were treated because, according to him, they literally lack any behaviour. The fact that they can filtrate huge amounts of water, burrow into the sedi ment, actively swim, drill holes into rocks and boats or detect shadows with the aid of pretty blue eyes located on the rim of their mantle obviously left v. Frisch unimpressed. Why, then, a book on the large freshwater mussels (Naiads or Unionoida), which on first sight are much less spectacular than the marine ones? The main reason is that they are keepers of secrets which they reveal only on close and careful inspection. This is not only true for the pearls some species produce and which over centuries have contributed to the treasures of bishops and kings, but particularly for their ecology: their life cycles are linked with those of fishes, some can occur in incredible densities and some can live for more than 100 years. Thus, the presence or absence of naiads in a lake or stream has manifold implications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide and a first-rate reference for the angler, scientist, and amateur naturalist alike, this comprehensive volume profiles each of the 144 fish species inhabiting the waterways of Kansas--as well as 27 others that might make their way to the state from nearby river basins. With 121 maps and 184 full-color drawings by Joseph Tomelleri, arguably the best illustrator of North American fishes, Kansas Fishes is an incomparable resource. For each species, the authors, an all-star cast of regional biologists, provide information about fundamental natural history, anatomy, and physiology, along with in-state distributions, habitats, characteristics, and pertinent issues of conservation and ecology. With these experts authoring detailed accounts of the species they know best, this is a uniquely authoritative account of the region's fishes. As such, it will prove useful to students and professionals while providing the passionate amateur and the simply curious an entry into the fascinating world of the fishes of Kansas and nearby states. The Kansas Fishes Committee members represent each of the six state universities (Emporia State, Fort Hays State, Kansas State, Pittsburg State, and Wichita State Universities, and the University of Kansas), as well as the Kansas Biological Survey, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, and the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism--the people responsible for studying, protecting, and educating people about the fishes and waters of Kansas. In addition to the committee, nearly 50 biologists from the United States and Canada volunteered to contribute species accounts to the book based on their expertise with those species in Kansas and nearby states. These individuals work for a variety of universities, federal and state agencies, and private companies, making this book a broad collaboration of experts on the fish species of Kansas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readers familiar with the first three editions of Ecology and Classification of North American Freshwater Invertebrates (edited by J.H. Thorp and A.P. Covich) will welcome the comprehensive revision and expansion of that trusted professional reference manual and educational textbook from a single North American tome into a developing multi-volume series covering inland water invertebrates of the world. The series entitled Thorp and Covich's Freshwater Invertebrates (edited by J.H. Thorp) begins with the current Volume I: Ecology and General Biology (edited by J.H. Thorp and D.C. Rogers), which is designed as a companion volume for the remaining books in the series. Those following volumes provide taxonomic coverage for specific zoogeographic regions of the world, starting with Keys to Nearctic Fauna (Vol. II) and Keys to Palaearctic Fauna (Vol. III). Volume I maintains the ecological and general biological focus of the previous editions but now expands coverage globally in all chapters, includes more taxonomic groups (e.g., chapters on individual insect orders), and covers additional functional topics such as invasive species, economic impacts, and functional ecology. As in previous editions, the 4th edition of Ecology and Classification of North American Freshwater Invertebrates is designed for use by professionals in universities, government agencies, and private companies as well as by undergraduate and graduate students. - Global coverage of aquatic invertebrate ecology - Discussions on invertebrate ecology, phylogeny, and general biology written by international experts for each group - Separate chapters on invasive species and economic impacts and uses of invertebrates - Eight additional chapters on insect orders and a chapter on freshwater millipedes - Four new chapters on collecting and culturing techniques, ecology of invasive species, economic impacts, and ecological function of invertebrates - Overall expansion of ecology and general biology and a shift of the even more detailed taxonomic keys to other volumes in the projected 9-volume series - Identification keys to lower taxonomic levels
