Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Services of Gen. John A. Logan: As Soldier and Statesman The enthusiasm kindled in the Chicago Convention of June, 1884, by the presentation of his name as the candidate of Illinois for the Presidential nomination, and the extraordinarily unanimous vote by which he was nominated for the Vice-Presidency, showed plainly enough the estimation in which General Logan was held by Republican men of affairs. But despite his admitted popularity and strength throughout the country - among the workingmen for whose interests he had so sturdily worked, among the Union soldiers of the war whom he had so often led in battle, among the colored people whose champion he had been on the tented field, in the Congressional forum, and upon the stump - his life-work covered so many fields, during more than a quarter of a century, that much of it is unknown to the younger men of the present day. I have therefore thought that a biographical sketch of this remarkable man would meet a public necessity, and help to place the General in military and political history in that true light which his own modesty denied him. In preparing this work I enjoyed all the advantages which full access to the General's scrapbooks, private papers, and military order-books could give me, in addition to the Rebellion Records and other official information accessible at Washington, and also freely consulted, and in some instances quoted from, the military works of the Comte de Paris, General Sherman's Memoirs, and Badeau's "Military History of Grant," besides securing authentic narrations of battle-scenes in which the General was engaged, from other active participants in the same. Book excerpt: A New York Times bestselling historian sheds new light on Sherman’s epic “March to the Sea,” especially the soldiers, doctors, nurses, and civilians who would change the nation for the better. America in the antebellum years was a deeply troubled country, divided by partisan gridlock and ideological warfare, angry voices in the streets and the statehouses, furious clashes over race and immigration, and a growing chasm between immense wealth and desperate poverty. The Civil War that followed brought America to the brink of self-destruction. But it also created a new country from the ruins of the old one—bolder and stronger than ever. No event in the war was more destructive, or more important, than William Sherman’s legendary march through Georgia—crippling the heart of the South’s economy, freeing thousands of slaves, and marking the beginning of a new era. This invasion not only quelled the Confederate forces, but transformed America, forcing it to reckon with a century of injustice. Dickey reveals the story of women actively involved in the military campaign and later, in civilian net- works. African Americans took active roles as soldiers, builders, and activists. Rich with despair and hope, brutality and compassion, Rising in Flames tells the dramatic story of the Union’s invasion of the Confederacy, and how this colossal struggle helped create a new nation from the embers of the Old South.

Book excerpt: "James P. Jones ... uses newspaper accounts, private letters, and the records of Congress to examine Major General John A. Logan's return to his political and legislative career after the Civil War. Logan emerged from the national conflict a military hero and uncommitted to any political party ... By 1884 his personality and fiercely defended principles had earned him the vice-presidential nomination on the ill-fated Republican ticket. Many writers on this period have portrayed Logan as a corrupt politician, but Jones successfully clears the Illinoisan's record"--Description of previous edition.

Book excerpt: John A. Logan, called "Black Jack" by the men he led in Civil War battles from the Henry-Donelson campaign to Vicksburg, Chattanooga, and on to Atlanta, was one of the Union Army’s most colorful generals. James Pickett Jones places Logan in his southern Illinois surroundings as he examines the role of the political soldier in the Civil War. When Logan altered his stance on national issues, so did the southern part of the state. Although secession, civil strife, Copperheadism, and the new attitudes created by the war contributed to this change of position in southern Illinois, Logan’s role as political and military leader was important in the region’s swing to strong support of the war against the Confederacy, to the policies of Lincoln, and eventually, to the Republican party.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Politician Turned General offers a critical examination of the turbulent early political career and the controversial military service of Stephen Augustus Hurlbut, an Illinois Whig. Republican politician, and Northern political general who rose to distinction as a prominent member of the Union high command in the West during the Civil War. Though traditionally there are two different characterizations of those who exercised command during the Civil War - soldier-politician and the political generals - Hurlbut was viewed as a military politician. This book provides an important study of another friend and/or political supporter of Lincoln who rose to general during the war and gained important appointments after the war. This first biography of Hurlbut chronicles the early life and the Civil War career of one of Abraham Lincoln's foremost military appointments. Through exhaustive research of primary and secondary sources, author Jeffrey N. Lash identifies and evaluates the successes and failures of Hurlbut's generalship and combat leadership, both as a field commander in Missouri in 1861 and as a division commander at the Battles of Shiloh and Hatchie Bridge in 1862.
