Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Principles of Abraham Lincoln Over two centuries and a half have passed away since the ruler of any great Nation of the world has fallen by the murderous attack of an assassin; and for the first time in our history there is blood on the Presidential chair of our Republic. Death is almost always saddening. The passing away of some dear friend from our earthly sight for ever, fills the heart with sorrow. When it strikes down one who fills honorably a position of influence and power, as in the case of our two Presidents who died of disease in the White House, the sincerest grief is felt throughout the land. But when this affliction is aggravated by death coming through the hand of a murderer, it is not strange that the wave of we sweeps gloomily over a nation, which sits down to mourn in sackcloth, its pulses of business stilled, feeling in every individual heart as if there was one dead at our own hearth-stones. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln The story of Lincoln's struggles, triumphs, and heroic death has become, a commonplace of history, and no series of biographies of the noble and good would be complete without a sketch of his life. While he owed his inspiration and training to the great Republic which he saved, and which has entered, as a direct fruit. Of his heroism, upon a new era of prosperity, all British people claim him as of their stock and kin. The anglo-saxon homely virtues of simplicity, tena city, and fidelity' were seen in him; Lincoln was a product of the principles which have given Milton, Cromwell, Livingstone, and other heroes to the world. All English-speaking people delight in his character and work, and it is not too much to say that all have been directly benefited by him and by his achievements. The world is brighter and purer because such a life once Shed its radiance in a dark place; nor will Lincoln ever be forgotten among the heroes who have made history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Abraham Lincoln: His Early History, Political Career, Speeches in and Out of Congress Gentlemen, only a few more words as to this alliance. For my part, I have to say, that whether there be such an alliance, depends, so far as I know, upon what may be a right defini tion of the tei'm alliance. If for the Republican party to see the other great party to among themselves, and not be glad of it - if that is an I am in; but if it is meant to be said that the Republicans had formed an alliance going beyond that, by which there is contribution of money or sacrifice Of principle on the one side or the other, so far as the Republican party is concerned, if there be any such thing, I protest that I neither know any thing of'it, nor do I believe it. I will, however, say - as I think this branch of the argument is lugged in - I would before I leave it, state, for the benefit Of those concerned, that one of those same Buchanan men did once tell inc of an argument that he made for his opposition to Judge Douglas. He said that a friend of our Senator Douglas had been talking to him, and had among other things said to him Why, you don't _want to beat Douglas? Yes, said he I do want to beat him, and I will tell you why. I believe his original Nebraska Bill was right in the abstract, but it was wrong in the time that it was brought forward. It was wrong in the application to a Territory in regard to which the question had been settled; it Was brought forward at a time when nobody asked him it Was tendered to the South when the South had not asked for it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Complete Works of Abraham Lincoln, Vol. 1 Something more than a decade has elapsed since the preceding words were written, and dur ing that period the assiduity of a multitude of Lincoln collectors has brought to light a large amount of manuscript material which inevitably escaped even such conscientious workers as Nic olay and Hay. The collectors have been so dili gent during this period it is hardly probable that any of Lincoln's writings of importance can be any longer undiscovered. The aim has been to collect this material, add it to the work of the two great biographers, and so make a complete and definitive edition. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Abraham Lincoln, Vol. 1: Drawn From Original Sources and Containing Many Speeches, Letters and Telegrams The work here offered the public was begun in 1894 at the suggestion of Mr. S. S. McClure and Mr. J. S. Phillips, editors of "McClure's Magazine." Their desire was to add to our knowledge of Abraham Lincoln by collecting and preserving the reminiscences of such of his contemporaries as were then living. In undertaking the work it was determined to spare neither labor nor money and in this determination Mr. McClure and his associates have never wavered. Without the sympathy, confidence, suggestion and criticism which they have given the work it would have been impossible. They established in their editorial rooms what might be called a Lincoln Bureau and from there an organized search was made for reminiscences, pictures and documents. To facilitate the work all persons possessing or knowing of Lincoln material were asked through the Magazine to communicate with the editor. The response was immediate and amazing. Hundreds of persons from all parts of the country replied. In every case the clews thus obtained were investigated and if the matter was found to be new and useful was secured. The author wrote thousands of letters and travelled thousands of miles in collecting the material which came to the editor simply as a result of this request in the magazine. The work thus became one in which the whole country co-operated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abraham Lincoln, the greatest of all American presidents, left us a vast legacy of writings, some of which are among the most famous in our history. Lincoln was a marvelous writer—from the humblest letter to his great speeches, including his inaugural addresses, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the Gettysburg Address. His sentences were so memorably crafted that many resonate across the years. "Fourscore and seven years ago," begins the Gettysburg Address, "our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal." In 1940, the prolific author and historian Philip Van Doren Stern produced this volume as a guide to Lincoln's life through his writings. Stern's "Life of Abraham Lincoln" is a full biography of the man and includes a detailed chronology. Stern has collected all the essential texts of Lincoln's public life, from his first public address—a stump speech in New Salem, Illinois, in 1832 for an election he went on to lose—to his last piece of public writing, a pass to a congressman who was to visit the president the day after Lincoln went to Ford's Theater on April 14, 1865. Some 275 such documents are collected and placed in their historical context. Together with the "Life" and the Introduction, "Lincoln in His Writings," by noted historian Allan Nevins, they give a full and vivid picture of Abraham Lincoln.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Abraham Lincoln, Vol. 1 Besides the biography proper, comprised in twenty-six short chapters, this volume contains a liberal collection of the most treasured stories and anecdotes either told by Lincoln or concerning him. Every effort has been made to include only such "Lincoln stories" as have well-established authenticity. Here also are estimates of Lincoln's character and achievements as presented in the eloquent tribute of Robert G.Ingersoll and the memorable eulogy pronounced by Henry Watterson. The life of Lincoln cannot be fully understood without a study of his letters and speeches, including the great debates with Stephen A. Douglas. As a stump speaker and an orator of singular effectiveness Lincoln left the impress ohis genius on the body politic no less plainly marked than the influence of his character and deeds. Owing to the comparative brevity of the present Life, it has been deemed best to give here but few quotations from speeches and letters, but in the other volumes of this series all the speeches are included, together with as many of the letters as are considered interesting or important. Read in connection with the Life, these will leave little wanting that is needful to a full appreciation of the personality and public services of the "first American." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heroic Life of Abraham Lincoln: The Great Emancipator Abraham was the firstborn, and then there was a sister Sarah, a year younger than he; then came Thomas two years later, who died in infancy. The first schooling Abraham got was from his mother, who taught his sister and him to spell and to read. \vhen in his Seventh year he went to school in the little log school-house near his home. But Thomas Lincoln, the father, heard of the richand fertile lands of Indiana, which had recently been admitted into the Union, and the tales of the Indians so inspired him that. He pulled up stakes and started for the new home, which to them was the Land of Promise. With all their household stuff packed on two horses, they made their way, by night sleeping on the fragrant pine twigs, clearing their way through tangled thickets and fording the streams. At last after a week or more on the tiresome journey they came to the banks of the river and, looking over, they saw the almost trackless forest which was to be their home. The family pushed their way forward, and on a grassy knoll in the heart of the untrodden forest they built their first rude cabin. Abraham was now in his eighth year. He was tall, thin and gawky, and clad in frontier fashion. He said himself he never wore stockings until he was a young man grown. In this log hut, in the first year of their frontier life, came their first great sorrow, the death of their mother, on the 3d of October. She was buried under the shade of a wide-spreading sycamore tree, and over her grave little Abe shed his first tears of real sorrow. Years after he would say with tear-dimmed eyes, All I am or hope to be I owe to my angel mother. In the autumn Of 1816, Thomas Lincoln, with the slight assistance little Abe could give him, felled the logs and raised a more substantial cabin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: The Practical Mystic In modern history there is no man whose life so finely bears for the world the sig nificance of a great work of creative wisdom as Abraham Lincoln. If it should be asked whether Lincoln was a greater man than Shakespeare, it must at least be remem bered, whatever the answer, that in Lincoln his life stands for the Lear and Marbetb and Twelfth Night and Tempest of Shakespeare. And it is the spectacle of the one perfecting his own soul that moves us as deeply and instructs us as surely as that of the other perfecting the creatures of his imagination. It seems to me that it is this faculty in Lincoln for investing the life of a statesman, absorbed in the medley of daily affairs, with spiritual significance, so that what he does, however pregnant, is always of secondary consideration to what he so supremely is, that Mr. Grierson has in mind when he calls him the practical mystic. The theme is a great one, and Mr. Grierson is to be thanked for dealing by it so justly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of Abraham Lincoln Mr. Lincoln himself made many political speeches; and he essayed several times, with varying success, to deliver popular lectures. Herndon says that on one occasion, when Lincoln was advertised to speak at Springfield, there were but two persons in his audience.42 Angle has shown this story to be apocryphal; but we can forgive Herndon his error, because it serves to recall a similar in eident in the career of Eli Perkins. On one occasion, as that humorist relates, he ploughed through a raging blizzard to a hall where he was to lecture, only to find that but one other man had ventured out. He said: My friend, to show my appreciation for your coming to hear me on such a night, I'm going to give my lecture in full, word for word, just as I would have given it if the hall had been filled with people. Well, all right, said his lone auditor; but I wish you would speak as rapidly as possible; I'm the janitor, and I'm anxious to get home.
