M'ginnes, of Shade Gap, Pa Books live, when those who wrote them are dead. A good book, like a true Christian, is of inestimable worth. They are both sentinels for truth - for God. They are both "epistles," the one "living" the other "written," and each may be read of all men "to the praise of the glory of God's grace." The more, therefore, both are multiplied the better; they will have not only their day, but their healthful influence. The following unpretending sketch has been prepared, because the author, with many others, felt that everything relating to one who was so universally beloved, and so useful in his "day and generation," ought not to be lost to the Church and the world - that although comparatively young and unknown when he died, his noble traits of character, and his labors in behalf both of education and religion, seemed to demand an extended notice. In the attempt, the author has been encouraged at every step by the special providence of God, and by the best wishes of not a few in regard to the enterprise. Book excerpt: A beautiful commemorative edition of Dr. Martin Luther King's essay "Letter from Birmingham Jail," part of Dr. King's archives published exclusively by HarperCollins. With an afterword by Reginald Dwayne Betts On April 16, 1923, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., responded to an open letter written and published by eight white clergyman admonishing the civil rights demonstrations happening in Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. King drafted his seminal response on scraps of paper smuggled into jail. King criticizes his detractors for caring more about order than justice, defends nonviolent protests, and argues for the moral responsibility to obey just laws while disobeying unjust ones. "Letter from Birmingham Jail" proclaims a message - confronting any injustice is an acceptable and righteous reason for civil disobedience. This beautifully designed edition presents Dr. King's speech in its entirety, paying tribute to this extraordinary leader and his immeasurable contribution, and inspiring a new generation of activists dedicated to carrying on the fight for justice and equality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Letters of Rev. Mother Teresa Dease: Foundress and Superior General of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary in America On the fifth of November, 1686, Sir Thomas Gascoigne, an English gentleman, purchased a house and garden at a place called Micklegate-Bar, in Yorkshire, and deeded it to a select religious community of English ladies established in the City of Munich, Bavaria. Some of the members were voluntary exiles who had left England during the turbulent reign of James I and entered the Community that they might in peace and security, answer the call of their Divine Master to a life of prayer and contemplation. The foundress of this Community was the illustrious Mary Ward, an English lady, intimately associated by birth with many of the great Catholic families of Yorkshire, England. She was born on the twenty-fifth of January, 1583, in Yorkshire, and, during the dark days following the apostasy of Henry VIII, lived with her parents in Paris, France. Here, in the twenty-fourth year of her age, she founded her Community and opened at St. Omer, 1609, a select school for young ladies. The Community increased in numbers, and in time was able to answer appeals to open schools in Bavaria, Flanders, Austria and Italy. In 1642, the saintly Mary Ward visited Heworth, England, where she died on the twenty-third of January, 1645. J Temple Notwithstanding the peculiar and private character of this correspondence, which certainly reflects in many parts little credit on the memory of the writer, still there can be little doubt that, could he now have a voice with respect to its publication, his morbid ego tiam would have approved of its thus appearing at the present day: indeed passages will be found in this volume which indicate that, not only did he reckon on Mr. Temple's preserving his letters, but even on the possibility of their coming to the eyes of the Public. It is interesting, in connection with the appearance of this volume, to read Boswell's own opinion upon the subject of the publication of private letters, which is expressed in the Preface to his correspondence with the Hon. Andrew Erskine which he published at an early period of his life Curiosity, says he, is the most prevalent of all our passions, and the curiosity for reading letters is the most prevalent of all kinds of curiosity. Had any man in the three kingdoms found the following letters, directed, sealed, and addressed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
