Excerpt: ... the interest of the Jameses finding a couple of blankets, and evidences of the late presence of men among Mr. Askew's haystacks. To still further confirm them in the belief that Askew assisted the detectives in the attack on the Samuels house, a young man known as Jack Ladd, who had been in Askew's employ as a farmer, departed from the country on the night of the assault. It is but justice to the memory of Mr. Askew, to state in this place that he frequently and earnestly disclaimed having any knowledge whatever of the movements of the detectives in the employ of Mr. Pinkerton. But his denials had no weight with the vengeful Jameses. They and their friends continued to believe that the attacking party were sheltered and led by farmer Daniel H. Askew, and they resolved to execute dire vengeance upon him. On the night of April I2th, 1875, Mr. Askew went with a bucket to a spring some distance from his residence, and returned to the house with the bucket filled with water. He had sat the bucket on a bench and was standing on his back porch, not having yet Death of Farmer Askew. entered the house after returning from the spring. Just in the rear of the house, and within ten paces of the edge of the porch on which Mr. Askew was standing, there was a heap of firewood reaching perhaps to the height of five or six feet. Behind this wood-heap the assassins found a convenient hiding place. Whoever they may have been, they had ridden to the rear of a field, hitched their horses, and walked through the field to their place of concealment. Suddenly the report of a pistol, followed instantaneously by the report of two shots, rang out on the night air, and Mr. Askew fell upon the floor of the porch and immediately expired. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Adventures of Frank and Jesse James: The Noted Western Outlaws The extraordinary demand for this history having worn out the orignal set of electrotype plates within the first year of its issue, the publishers, at heavy outlay, had the entire work reset and newly electrotyped. Advantage was taken of this opportunity to revise and also to enlarge and greatly improve the work, as befits its character as the standard authority on this important and popular historic subject. Authentic and carefully written biographies of the famous Younger Brothers were also added, forming the second part of the present volume. As it is the steadfast purpose of the publishers to keep the work fully up to the highest standard of authenticity and completeness, two subsequent revisions and enlargements have been made, bringing the history down to date and describing the exciting events connected with the Winstonville robbery and the death of Jesse James. Numerous carefully engraved portraits and views have been added, taken from life and from photographs furnished by Mrs. Samuels, mother of the James Brothers. At great trouble and expense, the publishers have also secured the original manuscript of the only letter written by Jesse James as Thomas Howard, and an exact fac-simile of it forms an attractive feature of the present edition. The extraordinary favor with which the work has been received, is due beyond doubt to its accuracy and truthfulness, and the easy, picturesque style in which it is written. These characteristics will be looked for in vain in any of the feeble yet pretentious imitations which the wonderful success of our canvassers has called into life. The publishers are confident that in its present shape Mr. Dacus' fascinating volume will prove more attractive and salable than ever. In the first serious biography of Jesse James in forty years, T. J. Stiles paints a strikingly new and vivid portrait of the period before the American Civil War, during the conflict and its aftermath. With groundbreaking scholarship and dazzling reinterpretation, T. J. Stiles has refashioned one of the great legends of American history.
