Book Synopsis Animal Intimacies by : Radhika Govindrajan
Download or read book Animal Intimacies written by Radhika Govindrajan and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-05-29 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A delightful read [and] an important addition to human-animal relations studies.” —Anthropology Matters What does it mean to live and die in relation to other animals? Animal Intimacies posits this central question alongside the intimate—and intense—moments of care, kinship, violence, politics, indifference, and desire that occur between human and non-human animals. Built on extensive ethnographic fieldwork in the mountain villages of India’s Central Himalayas, Radhika Govindrajan’s book explores the number of ways that human and animal interact to cultivate relationships as interconnected, related beings. Whether it is through the study of the affect and ethics of ritual animal sacrifice, analysis of the right-wing political project of cow-protection, or examination of villagers’ talk about bears who abduct women and have sex with them, Govindrajan illustrates that multispecies relatedness relies on both difference and ineffable affinity between animals. Animal Intimacies breaks substantial new ground in animal studies, and Govindrajan’s detailed portrait of the social, political and religious life of the region will be of interest to cultural anthropologists and scholars of South Asia as well. “Immerses us in passionate case studies on the multiple relationships between Kumaoni villagers and animals in Uttarakhand.” —European Bulletin of Himalayan Research “A memorable and innovative ethnography.” —Piers Locke, University of Canterbury

It examines closely how education, in turn, influences their development and prepares them for an uncertain future. The chapters focus on the rapid developments of the 21st century that are changing the nature of education, especially the shift needed to being able to sift through and meaningfully deal with overwhelming volumes of information now available. This book helps readers understand how children can benefit from the digital environment while avoiding its pitfalls. Keeping in mind that in today’s world parents are getting to spend less time with their children, the authors provide research-backed ideas on how they can best enable children’s development, including their thoughts, feelings and notions of self. Given the increasing disparities, there is a perceptive analysis of how education can build an awareness of equity in a context marked by diversity and disadvantage. This book addresses issues such as these in a reliable, scholarly yet accessible manner, for students, young researchers and lay readers. Consequently, it is a valuable source of fundamental insights and understanding for educators, policy-makers, educational administrators and students of human and child development, education, and teacher training courses.

Book Synopsis Rage of the River by : Hridayesh Joshi
Download or read book Rage of the River written by Hridayesh Joshi and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2016-06-09 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 17 June 2013, a normally calm Mandakini came crashing down from the hills in Uttarakhand and destroyed everything in its path: houses, bridges, dams and the town of Kedarnath. Thousands of people perished and lakhs lost their livelihood. Three years after the disaster, stories from the valley-of pain and sorrow, the state government's indifference and the corporate goof-ups, and the courage and heroism shown by the locals in the face of an absolute catastrophe-still remain largely unheard of. While the government continues to remain in denial and chooses to ignore the environmental issues in Uttarakhand, the ravaged Kedarnath valley continues to haunt us-though the temple has been restored, given its religious importance and centrality to the local economy. NDTV journalist Hridayesh Joshi covered the floods in 2013, exposing the government's apathy and inefficiency. He was the first journalist to reach Kedarnath after the disaster and brought to light the stories from the mostremote parts of the state: areas cut off from the rest of the world. Woven into this haunting narrative is also the remarkable history of the ordinary people's struggle to save the state's ecology. Rage of the River is a riveting commentary on the socio-environmental landscape of Uttarakhand and is filled with vivid imagery of the calamity.

Book Synopsis Biodiversity: An Overview by : Mukesh Kumar
Download or read book Biodiversity: An Overview written by Mukesh Kumar and published by I K International Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2011-07-15 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India’s phytodiversity is one of the most significant in the world. India is one of the twelve mega-biodiversity centers in the world and also an important center of origin of agrobiodiversity. It is therefore, very important to study, document and conserve the plant wealth of India and also of the world before its possible extinction. There are convincing scientific, economic and sociological reasons for giving priority to the conservation of the major centers of plant diversity throughout the world. The strategies to conserve the biodiversity include establishment of protected area network and corridors with emphasis on appropriate levels of management, reduction of anthropogenic pressure on natural populations by cultivating them elsewhere, programmes of augmentation, reintroduction and introduction of target taxa, restoration of degraded habitats, etc. The conservation strategies can be either, in-situ conservation of genetic resources within their ecosystem and natural habitat or ex-situ conservation of components of genetic material of biological diversity outside their natural habitat. The choice of conservation strategy depends upon the nature of the material to be conserved, i.e., the life cycle and mode of reproduction, size of individual population and ecological status. Ex-situ techniques include the establishment of botanical and zoological gardens, banks of pollen, seed tissue culture, DNA, etc. Establishment of forest reserves, national parks, protected areas and on farm conservation of valuable plant varieties is being promoted to facilitate their in-situ conservation.
Download or read book The Purple Lady... written by Jitesh and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Purple Lady is the story of the girl who is vividly narcissist, a struggler and of course someone who had promised life that she would not be enjoying it at a constant pace. The best part of her story is that random incidences are a part and parcel of her life. Unlike the Ravana of yore, who possessed the elixir of life in his belly, she possessed the figurative gem of eternal conflict in hers. Amid the tragedies of life and the sadness that kept her tripping almost everywhere, she meets a person who promises to take away all her worries and was ready to share her all her pains for rest of the life. The story started with trust, they become friends and finally in love. And they became victims of this infection. Problems, they kept coming in different intervals keeping pace with her journey of life. For example she gets diagnosed with a cancerous cyst in her ovaries and these would not allow her to conceive. This is just to name one, and the person who came into her life ignored along with other more ailments. The story holds a lot of incidents that burnish the trust the duo had in each other, and it also reveals the pain that broke apart the budding relationship and finally tore it asunder. So, a stereotypical Brahmin youth from Bihar named Kanisk falls for a beautiful Sikh girl. Or was it the otherwise, girl catching the wrong end of the callow Bihari youth, Kanisk. The discussions and decisions, challenges and the love trials, everything will just remind of love, sniffles and rejuvenation. Carry on! You are most open to God, when your heart is wide open, and your mind is settled and worry-free. For most of us, this happens in the presence of our beloved --- Anonymous
