Bis heute haben aber die Fragen, mit denen dieses katastrophale Ereignis alle Deutschen konfrontiert, nicht an Bedeutung und Aktualität verloren. Vielmehr fordert das öffentliche Gedächtnis mit jedem Generationswechsel neue Bilder von diesem Krieg. Im Rückblick auf den Zeitraum seit 1945 läßt sich ein Zyklus von Erinnern, Verstummen und erneutem Erinnern ausmachen, der bereits dreifach durchlaufen worden ist. Insofern ist der Umgang mit dem Thema in den deutschen Medien gleich nach Kriegsende auch für die Gegenwart aufschlußreich. Deutungen und Formen des Gedenkens, die heute praktiziert werden, haben selber inzwischen eine Geschichte. Mehrfach glaubte man bereits in beiden Teilen Deutschlands, daß die Schuldfrage gelöst sei und die Kriegserfahrung bewältigt. Jedesmal stellte sich heraus, daß die Deutschen noch immer in der Schuld sind, nicht nur aus der Perspektive ihrer europäischen Nachbarn. Die Beiträge in diesem Band gehen auf den Anfang eines unabgeschlossenen Prozesses zurück. Die Befragung gilt nicht den Menschen, sondern den Medien. Gefragt wird, wie in der Literatur, in der Presse, im Fernsehen und Film in den 40er und 50er Jahren mit dem Krieg umgegangen worden ist, welche Bilder davon die Literatur, die Presse, Fernsehen, Film und Hörspiel anzubieten hatten und welche Tendenzen sich dabei in den beiden deutschen Staaten, in Österreich, Polen und Frankreich nachweisen lassen. Eine Reflexion auf die neunziger Jahre macht das Thema spannend, denn dadurch wird den Bildern vom Krieg, die im wiedervereinigten Deutschland im Umlauf sind, ihr Ort im Zyklus zugewiesen: Ein Beitrag zur wieder nötig gewordenen Orientierung.

He gives an insight into the life conditions and circumstances in his home village, now under Russian occupation, shortly after the end of the war as he observed and experienced them. Expelled from his home by Polish authorities, he lives for a short time as refugee in communist East Germany and flees to West Germany. There he studies at the Technical University of Braunschweig and at the university of Bluffton USA. He describes interesting happenings on his trip hitch- hiking through the United States. After he finished his studies with a degree in Architecture, he emigrates to Canada. In Canada he worked as an architect and art instructor. He married Hildegard and they have three children. He described his life as an immigrant in his second book 'A Life Fully Lived (Loving Hildegard)' He lives now in Vancouver at the west coast of Canada. =========================== In German: Helmut Lemke wurde 1926 in Ostpreußen geboren. Er erzählt, oft humorvoll, über seine Zeit im Internat in Marienburg, in der HJ, im Arbeitsdienst und Militär. Er gibt einen Einblick in die Lebensbedingungen und Zustände, wie er sie kurz nach dem Krieg in seinem Heimatdorf vorfand und miterlebte. Er schildert schreckliche Erlebnisse unter russischer Militärbesatzung und polnischer Verwaltung. Von den Polen ausgewiesen, lebt er kurze Zeit als Flüchtling in Ostdeutschland, flieht nach Westdeutschland und studiert an der Technischen Universität Braunschweig und der Bluffton Universität in den USA. Er schildert interessante Erfahrungen von seiner Fahrt per Anhalter quer durch die Vereinigten Staaten. Nach abgeschlossenem Architekturstudium, wandert er 1955 nach Kanada aus. In Kanada arbeitete er als Architekt und Kunsterzieher. Er heiratet Hildegard und sie haben drei Kinder. Er beschreibt sein Leben als Immigrant in seinem zweiten Buch, A Life Fully Lived. Concentrating on the experience of young love in the novels, it alternates sociological and literary analyses. Issues like the presentation of men and women, the attitudes to love displayed by the National Socialist state, the characterisation of society and the socio-cultural debates around the ideals of masculinity and femininity of the 1920s and the 1930s are considered. In so doing this work gives substance to notions such as the 'crisis of manhood', the 'motherly woman' and the 'backlash against modernity'. This comparative approach establishes strikingly similar features in gender roles and the social place of love in quite disparate works revealing new insights into the Mentalitätsgeschichte of the 1930s.
