Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws the reader into the latest debate on fungal diversity and the concept of lichen symbiosis. Chapters of this book cohere around four general themes: endolichenic fungi, isolation and culture, identification and bioactive potential. This is a highly informative book providing scientific insight for scholars interested in lichens and fungi. This research intrigues readers with this fascinating and less known fungal community residing inside lichens and arouses curiosity among lichenologists and mycologists about these fungi and their potential. This treatise provokes debate on the definition of lichen and its compositional organisms and invites further investigations on this topic by adding to the scholarly debate with various new perspectives on endolichenic fungi in the last chapter. Not only this, it also clarifies the differences between endolichenic fungi, mycorrhiza and lichenicolous fungi and the fungi found freely in air, water and soil and contributes to the development of the new field of endolichenic fungi. This book supports readers to build their knowledge through helpful case studies conducted throughout the globe and plentiful figures and illustrations and chemical structures of the novel compounds harvested from endolichenic fungi. This book covers both classical and cutting-edge technologies in the field of endolichenic fungi and offers step-by-step procedures for isolation and identification of endolichenic fungi and further contributes in how one can harvest the secondary metabolites from endolichenic fungi. This book shares the knowledge of some highly experienced authorities in the field of lichenology, mycology and endolichenic fungi and offers a first stop for specialists who need information about particular aspects in the field of endolichenic fungi. This research will equip researchers, professors, professionals working in this field to understand lichens and its intricate internal ecosystem with a fresh perspective and also enables readers to explore further through annotated references to other works.

Book excerpt: This 10th edition, of the acclaimed reference work, has more than 21,000 entries, and provides the most complete listing available of generic names of fungi, their families and orders, their attributes and descriptive terms. For each genus, the authority, the date of publication, status, systematic position, number of accepted species, distribution, and key references are given. Diagnoses of families and details of orders and higher categories are included for all groups of fungi. In addition, there are biographic notes, information on well-known metabolites and mycotoxins, and concise accounts of almost all pure and applied aspects of the subject (including citations of important literature). Greece has a rich lichen flora but it is not well known, in large part because previous publications are scattered through a wide, and often obscure, literature. This comprehensive and detailed checklist puts the study of Greek lichens onto a firm foundation, and will be indispensible for any botanist with an interest in Greece. Lichenologists throughout the Balkans and the eastern Mediterranean region will also find it of value.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ecology of Papua provides a comprehensive review of current scientific knowledge on all aspects of the natural history of western (Indonesian) New Guinea. Designed for students of conservation, environmental workers, and academic researchers, it is a richly detailed text, dense with biogeographical data, historical reference, and fresh insight on this complicated and marvelous region. We hope it will serve to raise awareness of Papua on a global as well as local scale, and to catalyze effective conservation of its most precious natural assets. New Guinea is the largest and highest tropical island, and one of the last great wilderness areas remaining on Earth. Papua, the western half of New Guinea, is noteworthy for its equatorial glaciers, its vast forested floodplains, its imposing central mountain range, its Raja Ampat Archipelago, and its several hundred traditional forest-dwelling societies. One of the wildest places left in the world, Papua possesses extraordinary biological and cultural diversity. Today, Papua’s environment is under threat from growing outside pressures to exploit its expansive forests and to develop large plantations of oil palm and biofuels. It is important that Papua’s leadership balance economic development with good resource management, to ensure the long-term well-being of its culturally diverse populace.

Book excerpt: This volume on lichen biodiversity and ecology is dedicated to Harrie Sipman. It contains 29 peer-reviewed contributions by 50 authors. The emphasis is on the biodiversity and ecology of lichens in the tropics, but some papers are devoted to related areas. This volume is indispensable for active lichenologists, especially because it contains keys to several lichen genera. Full monographs are presented for the reinstated genus Herpothallon (with 29 species), the new genera Diaphorographis (with 2 species), Sipmaniella (with 1 species) and Synarthothelium (with 2 species), and the genus Placopyrenium (with 14 species and 3 varieties). Keys are furthermore given to all cryptothalline species of Lecidea, the lichenicolous genus Sphaerellothecium and the species of Cryptothecia and Stirtonia in Thailand. The genus Trypetheliopsis is resurrected for Musaespora, and all relevant combinations are made. Most papers describe various new species from all over the world, in the genera Bacidia, Buellia, Caloplaca, Chapsa, Cladonia, Cryptothecia, Diaphorographis, Gassicurtia, Herpothallon, Micarea, Phaeographis, Placocarpus, Placopyrenium, Porina, Pyrenula, Pyxine, Stirtonia, Strigula, Synarthothelium, Thelocarpon, Thelopsis, Xanthoparmelia, and Zwackhiomyces. The newly described Thelopsis is intermediate between that genus and Topelia, leading to the supposition that these genera are one continuum and should be united. Floristic papers are presented on lichens from Montenegro, Korea, Japan, Thailand, Namibia (including the description of an association), South Africa and the Seychelles and bryophytes of the Galapagos, but specimens from a multitude of other countries ranging from Iceland to Australia are cited throughout the papers. The floristic papers contain also new synonymys and combinations, partly in additional genera like Mycomicrothelia. One paper is devoted to lichens and global warming. The volume also contains three phylogenetic studies, viz. on all lichen groups with cyanobacteria, on Schistophoron and on Tylophoron, in which a systematic placement for this enigmatic genus is postulated for the first time. The volume is completed by lists of published papers and species decribed by Harrie Sipman. The volume is richly illustrated and contains many colour photographs, e.g. from all Herpothallon species and from sections through the apothecia of many Lecidea species.

Book excerpt: Lichen assocIations include some of the oldest living organisms and represent a major nutritional method adopted by one in five fungi. Major advances in our knowledge of these biologically fascinating organisms have been made in recent years and they now have a great deal to offer to teaching in colleges and universities. In addition to being examples of biotrophic systems, they merit discussion in courses on fungal phylogeny, fungal nutrition, ecology, ecophysiology, biogeography, evolution, chemo taxonomy, environmental monitoring, and algology. As all aspects of lichenology cannot be treated adequately in a book of this length, we have emphasized topics which we have found to be of particular interest to a advanced undergraduate and postgraduate biologists (or biogeographers) or those contemplating more detailed studies in particular areas. Consequently we have endeavoured to place lichen associations in the broader context of biological and biogeographical teaching. Examples are drawn from many areas of the world, including North America, but it is inevitable that European ones predominate, as lichens there are better known than in other regions. Technical terms are defined when first used, and definitions can therefore be located with the aid of the index. Lichens are not a systematic group and so are not appropriately treated in a groups-orientated programme, but are a major biological phenomenon all too commonly accorded scant attention in university courses.
