Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacopo Caviceo’s Peregrino (1508) was a popular Renaissance prose romance in Italy, France, and Spain. Considered the first novel written for women, Peregrino relates the courtship of two young lovers from hostile households who succeed in doing what Romeo and Juliet, among others, could not: reconcile their families and marry without resorting to suicide. Peregrino features cameos of historical celebrities who interact with fictitious characters during their many adventures, which include a Mediterranean pilgrimage, courtly celebrations, funerals, legal trials, and a journey to the Other World. The book presents female agency in psychologically developed characters and contexts and includes allusions to previous literary masterpieces, such as Homer’s epics, Virgil’s Aeneid, and Dante’s Divine Comedy. This edition includes a detailed introduction and a biography of Jacopo Caviceo. Drawing on critical and comparative studies in a broad range of literary interests, the book sheds light on the emergence of the modern novel in the early modern period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first study to relate the Greek romances to Elizabethan drama. It focuses upon the Greek romance materials in Shakespeare's plays to clarify the background of his art and to illuminate the relationship between the two literatures. The Greek romance tradition is described historically and traced through the works of Boccaccio and Cervantes, as well as other continental and English writers. Then, full attention is given to those plays of Shakespeare which utilize the Greek materials. The notes are full and, with the aid of the extensive index, can serve as a manual of the Greek romance materials in Renaissance literature. A bibliographic appendix lists the known editions, translations, and adaptations of Greek romances from about 1470 to about 1642. The manuscript history is reviewed briefly. Thorough, careful, the book will be indispensable for concerned scholars and libraries.

Book excerpt: During the first half of the sixteenth century, three generations of the Cromberger family dominated printing in Seville, a city which at the time was Castile's population center and seat of book production. This volume, based on extensive research, is the first study of a major sixteenth-century Spanish printing house. Griffin's account of the Cromberger press--from which came many influential religious, literary, and historical works--and the family's wider commercial interests at home and abroad provides important insights into contemporary Spanish culture and reading habits, and the Crombergers' wider significance in Renaissance culture and the history of printing. The book also includes, in a microfiche appendix, 1,600 pages of detailed bibliographical description.

Book excerpt: Our Hellenist, unknown to many scholars, does not appear on Wikipedia's list of 18 Spanish Hellenists in the XVI century. It is clear that up to now historians and researchers believed what other scholars and historians had said about him and further research was therefore not necessary. Whatever might have been the reason for the silence in the literature about him, one thing is clear: our unknown Hellenist was an expert in languages, because he knew Valencian, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Greek, Latin, and Hebrew. He liked to speak in his literature about the university of Salamanca and Antonio de Nebrija, and maybe this was due to the fact that he started there working as a translator. He was in charge of translating Historia de duobus amantibus (1444) by Eneas Silvio Piccolomini (Pope Pius II) in order to publish the Estoria muy verdadera de dos amantes, Euríalo franco y Lucrecia senesa in Salamanca in 1495. He could do so since his father was in the service of this Pope between 1560 and 1564 in Rome. His father's protector in those years was the cardinal Próspero Colonna (1426-1463), who opened the door to our Hellenist during his future book activities (Tragicomedia, 1506) with Gentile Montefeltro, her sister Agnesina Montefeltro (Itinerario,1508), married to Fabricio Colonna (and Agnesina's daughter Vitoria Colonna (La Propalladia, 1517) who was married to the Marqies of Pescara, Fernando de Ávalos. Our Hellenist was not just any character, because he was a descendent of an important family of which the members had royal occupations as courtiers. Thanks to his study with Nebrija he considers himself an expert in the Spanish language. This is reflected in his books when he (under pseudonyms) fiercely discusses printers who made mistakes and changed his text.Already in his young years he had gained experience in France and Italy and probably due to the inquisitions he used pseudonyms, like Francisco de Enzina, in all his books and manuscripts. At the beginning of the XVI century he decided to leave Spain and find his future in Italy. Thanks to his knowledge and the influence of his family it was not difficult for him to alternate with the characters at a high level. He could therefore establish early contact with Pietro Bembo, Federico Fregoso and Baldassarre Castiglione. His influence as Spanish courtier was so strong that various members of the humanistic circles of the court of Guidobaldo de Montefeltro started writing books. These humanistic circles would be a good springboard for our Hellenist in Italy, because he had contacts with Baltasar Castiglione, son of Luigia Gonzaga, César Gonzaga, Octavino Fregoso, and Pietro Bembo, brother-in-law of Cesar Gonzaga; also Julio de Medici and Federico Fregoso, son of Gentile Feltría.Our Hellenist was the chess master of Lucrecia Borgia in Ferrara and dedicated verses to her which were found in a version of one of his editions of Arnalte y Lucenda. There he had friendship with Jacopo Caviceo who wrote Il Peregrino in 1508 which was dedicated to Lucrecia Borgia. The influence of the work of Calisto and Melibea is noted throughout the work Il Peregrino and there is no doubt that Caviceo had contact with our Hellenist in Ferrara. It is logical to understand that the historians could never determine the biography of Hernán Díaz, the so-called translator of the Spanish work in 1516, known as Libro de los honestos amores de Peregrino y Ginebra, because it was a pseudonym of our Hellenist. Also in Ferrara our Hellenist could dispose of one of the many copies of Filippo Beroaldo's Latin work about Asno de oro and could have translated this work there. The goal of this book is to serve as a toolbox from which researchers can draw conclusions about the possibility that the first translation of Asno de oro was not translated by Diego López de Cortegana, but presumably by our Hellenist.
