Book excerpt: Presenting a new angle on angling: the captivating history of the daring, ingenious, and skillful women who have made a lasting impact on sportfishing -- from a trendsetting 15th-century nun to the champions of today's professional tournaments.Modern sportfishing began in 1496 with the definitive "Treatyse of Fysshynge wyth an Angle". Written by the English noblewoman and nun Juliana Berners, it marks the beginning of a long line of contributions that women have made to a sport often considered the province of males.Dozens of entertaining portraits present the distaff side of the rod and reel world. Lyla Foggia reveals innovations -- from fly-tying tricks to casting techniques -- developed by women, including Joan Wulff, whose teaching method Fly Rod & Reel declared, "(did) for casting what Stephen Hawking did for physics". Foggia visits the "big three" arenas of sportfishing -- fly-fishing, big-game angling, and bass tournaments -- to introduce such legendary figures as Mrs. Spalding, aless-than-100-pound wonder who landed a record-setting 426-pound swordfish. With insights into fishing as a reflective act, and featuring vint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russia's nuclear forces consist of both long-range, strategic systems-including intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs), and heavy bombers-and shorter- and medium-range delivery systems. Russia is modernizing its nuclear forces, replacing Soviet-era systems with new missiles, submarines and aircraft while developing new types of delivery systems. Although Russia's number of nuclear weapons has declined sharply since the end of Cold War, it retains a stockpile of thousands of warheads, with more than 1,500 warheads deployed on missiles and bombers capable of reaching U.S. territory. Doctrine and Deployment During the Cold War, the Soviet Union valued nuclear weapons for both their political and military attributes. While Moscow pledged that it would not be the first to use nuclear weapons in a conflict, many analysts and scholars believed the Soviet Union integrated nuclear weapons into its warfighting plans. After the Cold War, Russia did not retain the Soviet "no first use" policy, and it has revised its nuclear doctrine several times to respond to concerns about its security environment and the capabilities of its conventional forces. When combined with military exercises and Russian officials' public statements, this evolving doctrine seems to indicate that Russia has potentially placed a greater reliance on nuclear weapons and may threaten to use them during regional conflicts. This doctrine has led some U.S. analysts to conclude that Russia has adopted an "escalate to de-escalate" strategy, where it might threaten to use nuclear weapons if it were losing a conflict with a NATO member, in an effort to convince the United States and its NATO allies to withdraw from the conflict. Russian officials, along with some scholars and observers in the United States and Europe, dispute this interpretation; however, concerns about this doctrine have informed recommendations for changes in the U.S. nuclear posture. Russia's current modernization cycle for its nuclear forces began in the early 2000s and is likely to conclude in the 2020s. In addition, in March 2018, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia was developing new types of nuclear systems. While some see these weapons as a Russian attempt to achieve a measure of superiority over the United States, others note that they likely represent a Russian response to concerns about emerging U.S. missile defense capabilities. These new Russian systems include, among others, a heavy ICBM with the ability to carry multiple warheads, a hypersonic glide vehicle, an autonomous underwater vehicle, and a nuclear-powered cruise missile. The hypersonic glide vehicle, carried on an existing long-range ballistic missile, entered service in late 2019.

Matt Barlow and his team are back, this time using their research skills on behalf of presidential candidate, Senator Marie Kent. Matt's okay using his jury consulting firm in service of a good cause, and Senator Kent has a real shot at the nomination. No sooner has Matt sealed the contract than the political primary season erupts in threats and bombings on one campaign office after another, from Utah to South Carolina. Are these incidents related to recent mall shootings? Matt and his team are not convinced and will have to prove their case. With the primary race tightening, Matt and his researcher, Rick Seymour, keep their eyes on one Mike Toomey, the likely nominee for the other party. He's a guy whose past leads to a stealthy network of white supremacists and seemingly ordinary people willing to kill for a cause. Worse, some campaign operatives may or may not be who they claim. With the Democratic National Convention in Chicago a possible target, Matt and his team race to prevent an assassination attempt.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War and Peace in The Global Village is a collage of images and text that sharply illustrates the effects of electronic media and new technology on man. Marshall McLuhan wrote this book thirty years ago and following its publication predicted that the forthcoming information age would be "a transitional era of profound pain and tragic identity quest." Marshall McLuhan illustrates the fact that all social changes are caused by introduction of new technologies. He interprets these new technologies as extensions or "self-amputations of our own being," because technologies extend bodily reach. McLuhan's ideas and observations seem disturbingly accurate and clearly applicable to the world in which we live. War and Peace in the Global Village is a meditation on accelerating innovations leading to identity loss and war. Initially published in 1968, this text is regarded as a revolutionary work for its depiction of a planet made ever smaller by new technologies. A mosaic of pointed insights and probes, this text predicts a world without centres or boundaries. It illustrates how the electronic information travelling around the globe at the speed of light has eroded the rules of the linear, literate world. No longer can there be fixed positions or goals.
