Book excerpt: Popular American essayist, novelist, and journalist CHARLES DUDLEY WARNER (1829-1900) was renowned for the warmth and intimacy of his writing, which encompassed travelogue, biography and autobiography, fiction, and more, and influenced entire generations of his fellow writers. Here, the prolific writer turned editor for his final grand work, a splendid survey of global literature, classic and modern, and it's not too much to suggest that if his friend and colleague Mark Twain-who stole Warner's quip about how "everybody complains about the weather, but nobody does anything about it"-had assembled this set, it would still be hailed today as one of the great achievements of the book world. Volume 43 is Part Two of a dictionary of authors-from Hans Vilhelm Kaalund to Ulrich Zwingli-that serves as a handy, condensed reference to the authors quoted in the first 40 volumes, as well as a guide to thousands more authors whose works are notable but not featured in this set.

This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It would be enough to recommend this astonishing, 45-volume set, first published in 1896, if it were merely a wonderfully massive compilation of the world's best writings from the world's best authors up until the advent of the 20th century. But A Library of the World's Best Literature is so much more than that. For this marvelous collection represents the evolution of human thought-the evolution of human civilization, even-as seen through the mind of one of the most important, if sadly almost forgotten, literary figures of the 19th century.Popular American essayist, novelist, and journalist CHARLES DUDLEY WARNER (1829-1900) was renowned for the warmth and intimacy of his writing, which encompassed travelogue, biography and autobiography, fiction, and more, and influenced entire generations of his fellow writers. And so it still deserves to be. Arranged not chronologically but alphabetically, mostly under the names of authors but in some cases of literatures or special subjects-such as Icelandic literature or Arthurian legend-this set is no dry reference work. These eminently browsable volumes-available through Cosimo for the first time in decades in both paperback and hardcover editions-are meant to be read and enjoyed by anyone who loves the written word.Volume 45 features more synopses of notable works-from Adam Bede by George Eliot to Zury; The Meanest Man in Spring County by Joseph Kirkland-including many not previously referenced in the set but highlighted as well worth a serious reader's time and attention. This volume also includes a General Index to the 45-volume set.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Universal Anthology, Vol. 31: Collection of the Best Literature, Ancient, Medieval and Modern, With Biographical and Explanatory Notes The stage setting in this case is the wide porch with red tiled roof Of a poor villager's cottage. The front Of this cot tage, like most Of its kind, has in its center the main door, to the left the door Of the sitting-room, to the right the kitchen window. The two women are sewing, seated in the doorway. The second door stands partly open, as the good Uncle Nardo, the head Of the family, husband and father respectively of the characters in our dialogue, has just gone in to settle up his accounts. As for the window, although this is an unnecessary detail, I will state on the word Of a veracious historian, that it was closed; for its real use, more than to let light into the kitchen, is to let out the smoke when there is a fire in the fire place, which just now is as cold as the mush that has been cook ing there in the morning, - their food for the day. And we will add that it is now afternoon, stating also, and this is no idle detail as it may seem at a first glance, that we are in the month Of September. And now we have only to relate further that the little fellow who made such weighty charges against his mother and sister, came up to the porch, attired in a complete suit Of gray nan keen, his neck tightly swathed in the intricate and tumultuous folds Of an enormous cravat Of red and white checked cotton. His small and intelligent face was almost hidden under the wide brim Of his straw hat, adorned with a green band, and on his feet, to complete the picture, were clumsy, heavy shoes. The dust that covered them, the lad's ushed face, and the stout stick he carried, showed clearly that he had just come from a long walk. As for his grounds for complaint concern ing the maternal shears and his sister's needle, we cannot deny that they appear well founded, after close examination Of his clothing. At the same time it is evident that the poor women had never seen anything better in their way, and that the dis dainful little fellow had never before rejoiced in such fine feathers as those which now embarrassed him. We can also affirm that, in spite Of his Opening speech, there is a certain gleam of pleasure, a smile on his face, which would seem to denote an inner satisfaction; his journey must have had a satisfactory ending. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Universal Anthology, Vol. 25: A Collection of the Best Literature, Ancient, Mediaeval and Modern, With Biographical and Explanatory Notes That phase in the evolution of the French novel which has become known more particularly as the phase of the Naturalist School is now doubtless yielding to yet another phase, as is only natural, for there is no finality in literature. While, however, some schools perish entirely, others transmit certain essential principles to their successors, and whatever precise form may here after predominate in the novel, I think that absolute fidelity to nature, to life, to reality - the principle on which the Naturalist School has most insistedmmust remain a preponderating element, which no writer will be able to disregard, since no reader will be satisfied unless he finds it present. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Universal Anthology, Vol. 28: A Collection of the Best Literature, Ancient, Mediaeval and Modern, With Biographical and Explanatory Notes Beginnings, as we all know, are usually small things, but continuations are not always strikingly great ones, and the place occupied in the world by the prolonged prose fable has become, in our time, among the incidents of literature, the most surprising example to be named of swift and extravagant growth, a development beyond the measure of every early appearance. It is a form that has had a fortune so little to have been foretold at its cradle. The germ of the comprehensive epic was more recognisable in the first barbaric chant than that of the novel as we know it to-day in the first anecdote retailed to amuse. It arrived, in truth, the novel, late at self-consciousness; but it has done its utmost ever since to make up for lost opportunities. The flood at present swells and swells, threatening the whole field of letters, as would often seem, with submersion. It plays, in what may be called the passive consciousness of many persons, a part that directly marches with the rapid increase of the multitude able to possess itself in one way and another of the look. The book, in the Anglo-Saxon world, is almost everywhere, and it is in the form of the voluminous prose fable that we see it penetrate easiest and farthest. Penetration appears really to be directly aided by mere mass and bulk. There is an immense public, if public be the name, inarticulate, but abysmally absorbent, for which, at its hours of ease, the printed volume has no other association. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Universal Anthology, Vol. 14: A Collection of the Best Literature, Ancient, Medieval and Modern, With Biographical and Explanatory Notes Why, Sister, said he unto her, you see me to be an hundred leagues from the Court, in a solitary Country, where one can hardly behold anything that so much as resembles a woman, and you will be so cruel as to deprive me Of a company, wherein I meet with four very amiable ones; so as if it be true that the loss Of one Mistress brings an unquietness that cannot be ended but by Iron or poison, what do you think will become Of me, when you shall have taken from me four at a time, which I love passionately; and in a place where I can find no others? If I were at Paris, I should comply with you herein, not only for four, but for thirty, being well assured that I should repair this loss in a little time; but in the midst Of a Desert to deprive me Of four sole maids whom I can love, is so great an inhuman ity, in the humor wherein I am, as if you consider it seriously you must needs repent you Of it. But, answered his sister laughing, you do not love them, for how can you share yourself amongst so many? Not love them (replied the Marquis), naughty Sister, come, you do not know me, if you believe as you say; for it is most cer tain that I love them with all my soul; and that in all my life I never found myself so constant nor so amorous. And whereas this Maid could not very easily comprehend how a man could love four at once, and term himself constant; for to make her understand it, he told her that by a very extraordinary adven ture he had no great affection for any of them in particular, but meeting in these four persons separately, with that which he would have in one alone, he was so desperately in love there with as he was never in such a passion before. He told her further, that ordinarily when he found any thing that was amiable ih a woman he excused the defects which were in her, and became in love with all her person but that in this encounter, through a capriciousness of love, he was wounded in another sort. For, said he seriously, it would be impossible for me, in the estate wherein my mind now is, to love any of those maids singly; and I am never more joyful than when I see them all four together. I behold the whiteness of the first, the look of the second; I hear the voice of the third; and admire the gentleness of the last. In conclusion, I am so satisfied with this manner of loving, that when I could, by an unheard-of miracle, take from those four maids all that doth please me in them, to make thereof a masterpiece and a marvel such as I may imagine, yet should I rather choose to love them as I do. For if I should love but one of them, I should be without consolation when she were in choler; whereas contrari wise I am never altogether unhappy: if I have angered the fair one, the brown one regards me favorably; and if I am out with the serious one, the merry one comforts me with her jocund humor; and when it falls out that I am upon good terms with all the four, I have such delight as cannot be expressed. One. Prepares a Bracelet for me, another ties a band about my hat, a third gives me powder and essences, whilst the fourth causes her picture to be drawn for the love of me. In pursuance hereof, I sing a song that is agreeable to all four, which each of them applies to their own particular for a mark of my affection, and which they all commend with address and joy; and that which is yet more worth than all these things is that this passion is so fair and so extraordinary as the end of it can never be unhappy. For when as myself would contribute to mine own ruin, it is impossible that ever I should arrive to that unfortunate term, which for the most.
