Book excerpt: The Survey of Library Furniture Acquisitions Practices gives highly detailed data for public and academic libraries on their furniture purchasing policies including use of consortium purchases, online purchases, use of auctions and buying and selling of used furniture. The study gives highly detailed data on product choices, views on favored vendors, sources of information on best deals, and the impact of design, price, safety, durability, environmental impact and other considerations in the purchase decision. Survey participants tell of their best furniture purchases, and what they look for in a vendor of particular types of furniture. The survey gives data on buying plans for a broad range of furniture types including children's furniture, carrels, wall hangings, flooring and carpeting, shelves, desks, computer-related furniture and many other types of library furniture. Data is broken out for public and academic libraries and by library overall budget and furniture budget. The study is designed to help librarians answer questions such as: where do I find the best possible furniture and the best possible price? What are our peers buying and what are they satisfied with?

Book excerpt: Seismic surveys are subject to many different design criteria, but often the parameters are established based on an outdated view of how data can be acquired and how it will be processed. This book highlights what is possible using modern acquisition methods, techniques, and equipment, and how these may impact seismic survey design and acquisition.

Book excerpt: The study looks closely at how 42 academic libraries, mostly from research universities or other research-oriented institutions, seek out and purchase data sets for the general library collection and for use by particular academic departments. The 80-page study helps its readers to answer questions such as: how much do libraries spend on data acquisitions? How much do they plan to spend in the future? How do they decide which data acquisition requests to fund and which not? Do they have a data librarian? Which academic fields use the most data and make the most requests of the library? What percentage of requests are funded? When libraries and academic departments share costs of data acquisitions what is the split in costs? To what extent can data requests be met by existing collections of open access data sources that academic researchers may not be initially aware of? How do negotiations to purchase or license data differ from negotiations for other forms of content? The data in the report is broken out by many variables including size and type of college, tuition levels, enrollment levels and other variables. Data is broken out separately for R1 and R2 universities, for graduate professional schools, as well as for other types of institutions. The study includes data for 14 RI and 7 R2 institutions, as well as for many graduate professional schools. Some participants include Auburn, MIT, Claremont Colleges, Princeton, the University of Toronto, Georgetown, USC and the University of Calgary, among others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written from the perspective of a librarian, this book offers a comprehensive overview of the impact of e-books on academic libraries. The author discusses advantages to both researchers and librarians and provides current examples of innovative uses of e-books in academic contexts. This book reviews the current situation in e-book publishing, and describes problems in managing e-books in libraries caused by the variety of purchase models and varying formats available, and the lack of standardisation. It discusses solutions for providing access and maintaining bibliographic control, looks at various initiatives to publicise and promote e-books, and compares e-book usage surveys to track changes in user preferences and behaviour over the last decade. E-books have already had a huge impact on academic libraries, and major advances in technology will bring further changes. There is a need for collaboration between libraries and publishers. The book concludes with reflections on the future of e-books in academic libraries. Describes how e-books have changed library services and how they have enabled academic libraries to align with the e-learning initiatives of their universities Discusses problems with e-book collection development and management and lists examples of solutions Examines trends in user behaviour and acceptance of e-books

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over a decade, some academic libraries have been purchasing, rather than borrowing, recently published books requested by their patrons through interlibrary loan. These books had one circulation guaranteed and so appealed to librarians who were concerned about the large percentage of books selected and purchased by librarians but never checked out by their patrons. Early assessments of the projects indicated that patrons selected quality books that in many cases were cross disciplinary and covered emerging areas of scholarly interest. However, now we have a significant database of the ILL purchase records to compare these titles with books selected through normal methods. The projects described in this book present a powerful argument for involving patrons in the book selection process. This book looks at patron-driven acquisitions for printed books at Purdue University, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Illinois, as well as exploring new programs that allow patrons to select e-books or participate in other innovative ways in building the library collections. This book was published as a special issue of Collection Management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Instead of using expensive off-the-shelf surveys or relying on a poorly worded survey, read Making Surveys Work for Your Library and design your own that collect actionable data. Library listservs and websites are littered with examples of surveys that are too long, freighted with complex language, and generally poorly designed. The survey, however, is a widely used tool that has great potential if designed well. Libraries can implement surveys for a variety of purposes, including planning, program evaluation, collection development, and space design. Making Surveys Work for Your Library: Guidance, Instructions, and Examples offers librarians a contemporary and practical approach to creating surveys that answer authentic questions about library users. Miller and Hinnant have experience designing, deploying, and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data from large-scale, web-based user surveys of library patrons as well as smaller survey instruments targeted to special populations. Here, they offer library professionals a guide to developing—and examples of—concise surveys that gather the data they need to make evidence-based decisions, define the scope of future research, and understand their patrons.

Book excerpt: The survey presents data from 50 public libraries, predominantly in the USA but also from Canada and Australia, about their library policies on sales to the public of excess and donated books, DVDSs, audiobooks and other forms of intellectual property. The study presents highly detailed data on revenues garnered, prices charged, venues sold through, sources of revenue, and many other factors in library materials sales. The study helps library planners to answer questions such as: how much do libraries earn by selling books online? What percentage of library book sales are accounted for by Friends of the Library and similar groups? What are total revenues through all sales of intellectual property by libraries and what is the trend in revenues? How many book donations do libraries receive each year? How many DVDs? How many of these do they keep for their own collection and how many do they manage to sell? What are the best-selling genres?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book publishing industry is going through a period of profound and turbulent change brought about in part by the digital revolution. What is the role of the book in an age preoccupied with computers and the internet? How has the book publishing industry been transformed by the economic and technological upheavals of recent years, and how is it likely to change in the future? This is the first major study of the book publishing industry in Britain and the United States for more than two decades. Thompson focuses on academic and higher education publishing and analyses the evolution of these sectors from 1980 to the present. He shows that each sector is characterized by its own distinctive ‘logic’ or dynamic of change, and that by reconstructing this logic we can understand the problems, challenges and opportunities faced by publishing firms today. He also shows that the digital revolution has had, and continues to have, a profound impact on the book publishing business, although the real impact of this revolution has little to do with the ebook scenarios imagined by many commentators. Books in the Digital Age will become a standard work on the publishing industry at the beginning of the 21st century. It will be of great interest to students taking courses in the sociology of culture, media and cultural studies, and publishing. It will also be of great value to professionals in the publishing industry, educators and policy makers, and to anyone interested in books and their future.

Book excerpt: This book explores ways in which libraries can reach new levels of service, quality, and efficiency while minimizing cost by collaborating in acquisitions. In consortial acquisitions, a number of libraries work together, usually in an existing library consortia, to leverage size to support acquisitions in each individual library. In cross-functional acquisitions, acquisitions collaborates to support other library functions. For the library acquisitions manager, technical services manager, or the library director, awareness of different options for effective consortial and cross-functional acquisitions allows for the optimization of staff and resources to reach goals. This work presents those options in the form of case studies as well as useful analysis of the benefits and challenges of each. By supporting each other’s acquisitions services in a consortium, libraries leverage size to get better prices, and share systems and expertise to maximize resources while minimizing costs. Within libraries, the acquisitions function can be combined with other library functions in a unit with more than one purpose, or acquisitions can develop a close working relationship with another unit to support their work. This book surveys practice at different libraries and at different library consortia, and presents a detailed description and analysis of a variety of practices for how acquisitions units support each other within a consortium, and how they work with other library units, specifically collection management, cataloging, interlibrary loan, and the digital repository, in the form of case studies. A final section of the book covers fundamentals of collaboration.
