Book excerpt: Liberty is a look at this noble subject from a historical as well as Biblical standpoint. The author begins with a look at the life of his 10th great grandfather, who was a Puritan minister, and traces the history of the growth of liberty in this nation. As one moves through the book, liberty is observed from the view of the government, the home, the church, and the soul. The book is designed to be used as a quarterly study, complete with discussion questions. "Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof" (Leviticus 25:10). Ron Milliner and his wife have worked in public education for over 50 years. They both have a passion for history. His other passion is science, and his previous book, Fake Evidence, was a historical look at the major evolution-creation court cases from the Scopes Trial to Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District. They both grew up in the Louisville, Kentucky area but have broadened their horizons, having visited all 50 states and several foreign countries. They brought back many of these experiences into the classrooms where they shared them with their students. Now retired, he enjoys the opportunities to visit with churches and share what he has learned in history and science from a spiritual viewpoint.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Liberty Bell "Proclaim Liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof," is the legend moulded around the Liberty Bell. This inscription is from the twenty-fifth chapter of Leviticus, as part of the directions given by Jehovah for the celebration of the year of jubilee, and the very next words to it in the Bible are: "It shall be a jubilee unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession." For Liberty is the "possession" of every man, woman and child. The Story of the Liberty Dell is the story of Liberty. It is a history of thrills and throbs and tears. If the ancient Hebrew slaves had not made that immortal dash for liberty when the Egyptians pursuing them were drowned in the Red Sea, there never would have been that tumult in the city, In the quaint old Quaker town, when the Liberty Bell rang in the "year of jubilee," and rang out the glad tidings of freedom "throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof." When ancient people conquered their enemies they made captives and slaves of them. They had very little idea of personal rights and still less of religions liberty. They seemed to think that those who did not believe as they did ought to be put to death if they were strong enough to kill them-unless they cared to make slaves of them or hold them for ransom. The ancients understood the right of Might, but they knew nothing of the might of Right. Though the human race is counted to be six thousand years old, Liberty, as we know it, is but little more than one hundred years old. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Independence Hall is a place Americans think they know well. Within its walls the Continental Congress declared independence in 1776, and in 1787 the Founding Fathers drafted the U.S. Constitution there. Painstakingly restored to evoke these momentous events, the building appears to have passed through time unscathed, from the heady days of the American Revolution to today. But Independence Hall is more than a symbol of the young nation. Beyond this, according to Charlene Mires, it has a long and varied history of changing uses in an urban environment, almost all of which have been forgotten. In Independence Hall, Mires rediscovers and chronicles the lost history of Independence Hall, in the process exploring the shifting perceptions of this most important building in America's popular imagination. According to Mires, the significance of Independence Hall cannot be fully appreciated without assessing the full range of political, cultural, and social history that has swirled about it for nearly three centuries. During its existence, it has functioned as a civic and cultural center, a political arena and courtroom, and a magnet for public celebrations and demonstrations. Artists such as Thomas Sully frequented Independence Square when Philadelphia served as the nation's capital during the 1790s, and portraitist Charles Willson Peale merged the arts, sciences, and public interest when he transformed a portion of the hall into a center for natural science in 1802. In the 1850s, hearings for accused fugitive slaves who faced the loss of freedom were held, ironically, in this famous birthplace of American independence. Over the years Philadelphians have used the old state house and its public square in a multitude of ways that have transformed it into an arena of conflict: labor grievances have echoed regularly in Independence Square since the 1830s, while civil rights protesters exercised their right to free speech in the turbulent 1960s. As much as the Founding Fathers, these people and events illuminate the building's significance as a cultural symbol.
