Book excerpt: The Legendary All-Natural Recipes Of The Liberia Peoples OfWestAfrica. Welcome to Liberia's Culinary Landscape Liberia, a small West African nation nestled along the Atlantic coast, is a country of captivating beauty and rich cultural heritage. With its lush rainforests, pristine beaches, and bustling markets, Liberia offers a unique and vibrant culinary experience. This book will take you on a mouth-watering journey through the diverse and delicious world of Liberian cuisine, showcasing its top traditional dishes, each packed with flavour and history. A Brief History of Liberian Cuisine Liberian cuisine reflects the nation's diverse cultural history, influenced by the indigenous tribes, freed American slaves, and European settlers that have shaped the country over the years. The result is a unique fusion of flavours and techniques that tell the story of Liberia's rich past. The foundation of Liberian cuisine lies in the traditional ingredients and cooking techniques of the region's 16 ethnic groups. Each group has contributed its own distinct flavours and recipes, creating a harmonious blend of tastes that continue to evolve with time. Exploring Traditional Ingredients and Cooking Techniques The heart of Liberian cuisine lies in its use of fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Staples such as rice, cassava, plantains, and yams form the base of most meals, while an array of vegetables, legumes, and proteins provide nourishment and flavour. Palm oil, a quintessential West African ingredient, lends its rich, earthy taste to many Liberian dishes. Liberian cooking techniques are rooted in age-old traditions, passed down from generation to generation. Open-fire cooking, stewing, and frying are common methods used to prepare meals, with an emphasis on simplicity and preserving the natural flavours of the ingredients.

Book excerpt: Chronicles Of Muguland II - Brothers At War This book II in the Chronicles of Muguland factional series recounts in vivid detail the drama, the horrors and the cost of the fratricidal civil war between the tribes of Muguland when the military rulers, who had seized power by force of arms, finally fell out among themselves. The tribal generals declared war on each other with the lives of millions of citizens of Muguland in the balance This short historical novel is a work of FACTION that incorporated fiction and non-fiction narratives in a sprawling tale of betrayals, ego, ambition and dashed hopes in an fictional african nation blessed with so much natural and human resources, but which continuously failed to live up to its potential for greatness. This may be a work of faction but it is indeed the true story of most african countries in a continent blessed with so much but with so little to show for their blessings

Book excerpt: Tracing the movement of people to and from Liberia in the nineteenth century Established by the American Colonization Society in the early nineteenth century as a settlement for free people of color, the West African colony of Liberia is usually seen as an endpoint in the journeys of those who traveled there. In Atlantic Passages, Robert Murray reveals that many Liberian settlers did not remain in Africa but returned repeatedly to the United States, and he explores the ways this movement shaped the construction of race in the Atlantic world. Tracing the transatlantic crossings of Americo-Liberians between 1820 and 1857, in addition to delving into their experiences on both sides of the ocean, Murray discusses how the African neighbors and inhabitants of Liberia recognized significant cultural differences in the newly arrived African Americans and racially categorized them as “whites.” He examines the implications of being perceived as simultaneously white and Black, arguing that these settlers acquired an exotic, foreign identity that escaped associations with primitivism and enabled them to claim previously inaccessible privileges and honors in America. Highlighting examples of the ways in which blackness and whiteness have always been contested ideas, as well as how understandings of race can be shaped by geography and cartography, Murray offers many insights into what it meant to be Black and white in the space between Africa and America. Publication of the paperback edition made possible by a Sustaining the Humanities through the American Rescue Plan grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Book excerpt: The Danger of Celebrity in Power: The Case of Liberia takes you on an engaging journey that dissects the rise of celebrities to political power and unravels the implications of their imposing rule, sometimes to the detriment of democracy’s growth and development. In particular, the book delves into the small West African nation of Liberia as an embryonic and fragile democracy with many years of social, economic, and political decadence. There, to the shock of the world, a footballer, George Oppong Manneh Weah, was elected president in 2017. My intent is not to cast doom but to realistically unearth the dangerous effects that are rapidly emerging in Liberia since the footballer assumed power. The visible indicators of what is to come are extensively discussed in this book. It is absolutely prudent to underscore that mediocrity has taken over Liberia with the election of a football star, whose entire background is completely unrelated to the functions of the presidency. President Weah has no credible corporate or political leadership experience; thus he lacks the background and savoir-faire to lead Liberia out of its current fragility and degradation onto a trajectory of sustainable peace and stability. In less than twelve months into his leadership, the president has grossly and repeatedly violated the laws of Liberia, demonstrated intolerance toward the opposition, and continuously threatened advocates (i.e., critical voices), portending the emergence of tyranny. President Weah has called the opposition “enemies of the state”; said to the Liberian people, “I cannot fight corruption because everyone is related”; and said to the BBC stringer in Liberia, Jonathan Paye-Layleh, “You were one of those against me when I was advocating for peace.” Certainly, these statements are worrisome; coming from the heart of a rookie president, overwhelmingly elected with 61.5 percent of the total valid votes cast, in less than twelve months. The implications of such tyrannical moves are enormous and must not be discounted. Obviously, these are scary times, which reflect a looming danger. The trend cannot continue unabated.
