Book Synopsis Logic and How it Gets That Way by : Dale Jacquette
Download or read book Logic and How it Gets That Way written by Dale Jacquette and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this challenging and provocative analysis, Dale Jacquette argues that contemporary philosophy labours under a number of historically inherited delusions about the nature of logic and the philosophical significance of certain formal properties of specific types of logical constructions. Exposing some of the key misconceptions about formal symbolic logic and its relation to thought, language and the world, Jacquette clears the ground of some very well-entrenched philosophical doctrines about the nature of logic, including some of the most fundamental seldom-questioned parts of elementary propositional and predicate-quantificational logic. Having presented difficulties for conventional ways of thinking about truth functionality, the metaphysics of reference and predication, the role of a concept of truth in a theory of meaning, among others, Jacquette proceeds to reshape the network of ideas about traditional logic that philosophy has acquired along with modern logic itself. In so doing Jacquette is able to offer a new perspective on a number of existing problems in logic and philosophy of logic.

Download or read book Introduction to Languages, Machines and Logic written by Alan P. Parkes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A well-written and accessible introduction to the most important features of formal languages and automata theory. It focuses on the key concepts, illustrating potentially intimidating material through diagrams and pictorial representations, and this edition includes new and expanded coverage of topics such as: reduction and simplification of material on Turing machines; complexity and O notation; propositional logic and first order predicate logic. Aimed primarily at computer scientists rather than mathematicians, algorithms and proofs are presented informally through examples, and there are numerous exercises (many with solutions) and an extensive glossary.
Book Synopsis Logical Foundations of Artificial Intelligence by : Michael R. Genesereth
Download or read book Logical Foundations of Artificial Intelligence written by Michael R. Genesereth and published by Morgan Kaufmann. This book was released on 2012-07-05 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended both as a text for advanced undergraduates and graduate students, and as a key reference work for AI researchers and developers, Logical Foundations of Artificial Intelligence is a lucid, rigorous, and comprehensive account of the fundamentals of artificial intelligence from the standpoint of logic. The first section of the book introduces the logicist approach to AI--discussing the representation of declarative knowledge and featuring an introduction to the process of conceptualization, the syntax and semantics of predicate calculus, and the basics of other declarative representations such as frames and semantic nets. This section also provides a simple but powerful inference procedure, resolution, and shows how it can be used in a reasoning system. The next several chapters discuss nonmonotonic reasoning, induction, and reasoning under uncertainty, broadening the logical approach to deal with the inadequacies of strict logical deduction. The third section introduces modal operators that facilitate representing and reasoning about knowledge. This section also develops the process of writing predicate calculus sentences to the metalevel--to permit sentences about sentences and about reasoning processes. The final three chapters discuss the representation of knowledge about states and actions, planning, and intelligent system architecture. End-of-chapter bibliographic and historical comments provide background and point to other works of interest and research. Each chapter also contains numerous student exercises (with solutions provided in an appendix) to reinforce concepts and challenge the learner. A bibliography and index complete this comprehensive work.

Book Synopsis Universality and the Liar by : Keith Simmons
Download or read book Universality and the Liar written by Keith Simmons and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993-07-30 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about one of the most baffling of all paradoxes--the famous Liar paradox. Suppose we say: "We are lying now." Then if we are lying, we are telling the truth; and if we are telling the truth we are lying. This paradox is more than an intriguing puzzle, since it involves the concept of truth. Thus any coherent theory of truth must deal with the Liar. Keith Simmons discusses the solutions proposed by medieval philosophers and offers his own solutions and in the process assesses other contemporary attempts to solve the paradox. Unlike such attempts, Simmons' "singularity" solution does not abandon classical semantics and does not appeal to the kind of hierarchical view found in Barwise's and Etchemendy's The Liar. Moreover, Simmons' solution resolves the vexing problem of semantic universality--the problem of whether there are semantic concepts beyond the expressive reach of a natural language such as English.
