Book excerpt: This book studies the evolution and destruction of a part of the English landscape, following the history of three peasant communities - Landbeach, Waterbeach and Cottenham - on the margin of the Fens. Here, lord and peasant together developed a society that derived its strength from the balance between arable and lush grassland. The fenman in his struggle against the unpredictable floods learned a wiliness that enabled him to outwit the new acquisitive landlords of the Tudor period and to control his own destiny. Thus the peasant community increased its power and kept the old ways of field and fell almost inviolate until commerce and industry created irresistible market forces.

Book excerpt: Ideas of separation and divorce--the geographical divides of borders, the separation of the dead and the living, the movement from childhood to adulthood, and the end of relationships--drive this poetry collection from one of Great Britain's rising young talents. The collection revolves around the poems "Y Gaer" and "The Hillfort," the titles themselves suggesting the linguistic divide in Wales, from poems concerned with childhood, a Welsh landscape, and family to an outward-looking vision that is both geographic and historic.

Book Synopsis India's Waters by : Mahesh Chandra Chaturvedi
Download or read book India's Waters written by Mahesh Chandra Chaturvedi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-12-20 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regulation of India’s rivers and other water systems has been evolving for thousands of years in the face of varying socioeconomic and technological conditions. India's Waters: Environment, Economy, and Development is a study of the current state of development, and proposed future development policies of the government of India, which is the developmental agency. The author first addresses India’s physical and hydrological environment. He explains how the government, using his research, has estimated its usable resources and water requirements for life, environment, and economy for the next half-century. The book describes how, based on its own assessment, the government has made detailed suggestions about developing India’s water resources. After covering the overall national study and analysis, the author addresses the current development of the major river basins— the Indus and Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna (GBM) basins, as well as the Central, Peninsular and others. He follows with analysis of watershed, groundwater, and command area development. Inter-basin water transfer has been considered throughout India’s long history. This book briefly details suggestions for interlinking India’s rivers and concludes by presenting legal framework and institutional issues. This is the first of Dr. M.C. Chaturvedi’s three studies on the waters of India. The second, India’s Waters: Advances in Development and Management, presents his proposals for revolutionizing their development, and the third focuses on development of the GBM basin, which is now an international river system. These studies are a unique contribution to the science and art of water resource development from a highly respected expert. He has designed most of the major projects in the Ganga basin and continues to teach and conduct research at the international level.

Book Synopsis Who Owns Knowledge? by : Bernd Weiler
Download or read book Who Owns Knowledge? written by Bernd Weiler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who Owns Knowledge? explores the emerging linkages between the extension of knowledge and the law. It anticipates that the legal system will not only be called upon to adjudicate in matters of creative minds, but will be expected to do so to an ever increasing degree. Linkages between the legal system and knowledge are bound to multiply in modern societies. Ironically, while increasingly relying on knowledge, we are simultaneously investing significant resources into controlling this same knowledge. This includes developing a system of legal governance over how knowledge is extended or enlarged. Such modes of governance may take the form of regulatory legal codes, or legal challenges and judgments that shape the evolution of modern society and potentially transform knowledge itself, as a productive force. Who Owns Knowledge? asks such questions as: What is the appropriate balance of public and private interests involved in this process? How can creative powers, natural resources and indigenous knowledge be protected from either public or private exploitation? Does the law have the power to prevent this exploitation, or is adaptive technology needed? Also, in this identity theft conscious age, how can the rights of the individual be protected against policies allowing access to any kind of information, especially confidential information? The editors and contributors demonstrate that the relationship between knowledge and the law needs to be further researched and discussed. Who Owns Knowledge? is a must-read for those interested in the subjects of intellectual property, the history and development of modern legal and economic systems and their entanglements, and how judicial systems make choices between the legal and economic systems and, especially, between the public and private good and their often opposing interests.
Book Synopsis Floods and Drainage by : Edmund Penning-Rowsell
Download or read book Floods and Drainage written by Edmund Penning-Rowsell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1986, Floods and Drainage advanced hazard – response theory as developed mainly by the White/Burton/Kates school of researchers in North America. Based on fifteen years of research, the book rejects conventional theory’s emphasis on personal response to hazardous environments, suggesting that this seriously detracts from the institutional and political forces that are so important in the analysis of hazard responses and policies. The book also seeks to provide material of practical relevance to environmental managers and engineers, rather than to present just research results.

Book Synopsis Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management by : Edmund Penning-Rowsell
Download or read book Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management written by Edmund Penning-Rowsell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-03 with total page 701 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new ‘Multi-Coloured Manual' This book is a successor to and replacement for the highly respected manual and handbook on the benefits of flood and coastal risk management, produced by the Flood Hazard Research Centre at Middlesex University, UK, with support from Defra and the Environment Agency. It builds upon a previous book known as the "multi-coloured manual" (2005), which itself was a synthesis of the blue (1977), red (1987) and yellow manuals (1992). As such it expands and updates this work, to provide a manual of assessment techniques of flood risk management benefits, indirect benefits, and coastal erosion risk management benefits. It has three key aims. First it provides methods and data which can be used for the practical assessment of schemes and policies. Secondly it describes new research to update the data and improve techniques. Thirdly it explains the limitations and complications of Benefit-Cost Analysis, to guide decision-making on investment in river and coastal risk management schemes.
