Book excerpt: Tout commence par une ambiguïté historique et linguistique : les femmes publiques sont censées arpenter le trottoir. Comme le note Michelle Perrot : "dans l'espace public, celui de la cité, hommes et femmes se situent aux deux extrémités de l'échelle des valeurs." La thèse des auteurs est que cette spécificité française (non-reconnaissance des femmes dans la vie politique) trouve en partie son origine et perdure par l'enseignement de l'histoire à travers des manuels qui sont plus que de simples révélateurs, ils ont leur efficacité propre. Cette intuition s'appuie sur l'étude de 30 manuels portant sur des auteurs, des éditeurs et des périodes différents du XXe siècle : 10 pour l'entre deux guerres, 12 pour les années 50 - 60 et 8 manuels pour les années 80 - 90. Tous les manuels ne sont pas sexistes au même degré, mais la tendance fondamentale est indéniable. Une constatation s'impose d'urgence, il faut réduire cette différence entre des élections désormais paritaires et des représentations aux antipodes. Paradoxalement en France, alors que le niveau scolaire des filles est parmi les meilleurs de l'Union européenne de même que le taux d'insertion professionnelle des femmes, leur activité politique est des plus faibles. L'analyse des manuels d'histoire de l'enseignement primaire du XXe siècle montre que ces livres sont en partie responsables de cette anomalie. Quand on constate que le droit de vote des femmes enfin obtenu en 1944 n'est mentionné dans ces manuels qu'à partir de 1985 et que trop souvent ces mêmes livres n'ont donné que des commentaires négatifs de l'action politique de femmes ayant disposé d'un certain pouvoir : la cruelle Brunehaut, la traîtresse Isabeau de Bavière, la perfide Catherine de Médicis, l'intrigante et fatale Marie-Antoinette, on ne peut que déplorer cette étrange éducation civique à rebours. Il est plus que temps que disparaissent définitivement ces stéréotypes si l'on veut éviter aux prochaines élections paritaires des lendemains qui déchantent.

Although the question of prioritizing either the level of content or that of form has often provoked controversies, most contributions here treat them as internally connected. While theoretical considerations inform many of the readings, the main interest of most articles can be described as rhetorical (in the widest sense) – given that the ancient discipline of rhetoric did not only include the study of rhetorical figures and tropes such as metaphor, irony, or satire, but also that of topoi, which were originally viewed as the ‘places’ where certain arguments could be found, but later came to represent the arguments or intellectual themes themselves. Another feature shared by most of the articles is the tendency of ‘undeclared thematology’, which not only reflects the persistence of the charge of positivism, but also shows that most scholars prefer to locate themselves within more specific, often interdisciplinary fields of literary study. In this sense, this volume does not only prove the ongoing relevance of traditional fields such as rhetoric and thematology, but provides contributions to currently flourishing research areas, among them literary multilingualism, literature and emotions, and ecocriticism.
