Book Synopsis Police Culture by : Eugene A. Paoline
Download or read book Police Culture written by Eugene A. Paoline and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A highly identifiable topic of discussion among scholars and practitioners alike is police culture. Unfortunately, a large degree of vagueness and confusion also comes with this concept, as a variety of definitions, perspectives, and levels of aggregation are used to describe the ways in which officers cope with the problems and conditions faced out on the street and inside the police department. Police Culture: Adapting to the Strains of the Job provides clarity to such discussions by comprehensively organizing the disparate conceptualizations of police culture based on key assumptions, foundational research, primary cultural explanation, and common research methodologies. Based on in-person surveys of patrol officers from seven agencies of varying size, structure, and geographic locale, the book also provides one of the most comprehensive empirical examinations of police culture to date. The findings point to features of the occupation where there is widespread agreement among officers, as well as elements that produce cultural heterogeneity. The implications of these findings for the "homogeneity versus heterogeneity" police culture debate are discussed. The book also uniquely traces the historical context of police culture across five primary policing eras spanning the past several hundred years. The "lessons from the field" section offers several helpful hints for those interested in police research (in general) and survey methodologies specifically. The book is intended for police researchers, students, and practitioners with various interests and knowledge levels. "This is probably one of the most comprehensive studies of what police culture actually entails, delving into the aspects of what officers routinely deal with out in the field on a daily basis...what is so refreshing about this book is that not only is it well written and the subject matter so well researched, it is surprisingly easy to follow about the intentions of the study and the outcome of the findings themselves on police culture." -- Frank Fuller, Criminal Justice Review 39(4)

Download or read book Resonant Violence written by Kerry Whigham and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2022-02-11 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Holocaust in Europe to the military dictatorships of Latin America to the enduring violence of settler colonialism around the world, genocide has been a defining experience of far too many societies. In many cases, the damaging legacies of genocide lead to continued violence and social divisions for decades. In others, however, creative responses to this identity-based violence emerge from the grassroots, contributing to widespread social and political transformation. Resonant Violence explores both the enduring impacts of genocidal violence and the varied ways in which states and grassroots collectives respond to and transform this violence through memory practices and grassroots activism. By calling upon lessons from Germany, Poland, Argentina, and the Indigenous United States, Resonant Violence demonstrates how ordinary individuals come together to engage with a violent past to pave the way for a less violent future.
Book Synopsis Empathy versus Offending, Aggression and Bullying by : Darrick Jolliffe
Download or read book Empathy versus Offending, Aggression and Bullying written by Darrick Jolliffe and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-03-23 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book advances knowledge about the measurement of empathy, using the Basic Empathy Scale (BES), and how empathy is related to offending, aggression, and bullying in community and incarcerated groups. Empathy is widely accepted as one of the most important individual factors that is related to offending, aggression, and bullying, and it is common in many intervention projects to aim to improve empathy in order to reduce offending, aggression, and bullying. The BES was constructed by Jolliffe and Farrington (2006) and has been widely used in a number of countries. This book presents a collection of papers exploring the application of BES in 10 different countries (England, Portugal, Spain, Poland, Italy, the Netherlands, Croatia, Australia, Canada, and the USA). Each chapter reviews the use of the BES in that particular jurisdiction, its psychometric properties, and its importance in relation to offending, aggression, and bullying. The research includes samples from primary schools, secondary schools, and the community, as well as those who are justice-involved and on probation, in prisons and secure psychiatric hospitals. In bringing together this broad range of contributions, the book concludes with wider implications for intervention, policy, and practice. This book will be valuable for students, academics, and practitioners who are interested in developing their understanding of the complex link between empathy and a range of antisocial behaviours.

Book Synopsis Latinx Queer Psychology by : Reynel Alexander Chaparro
Download or read book Latinx Queer Psychology written by Reynel Alexander Chaparro and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together studies that contribute to the emergence of a latinx queer psychology. LGBTQ+ studies have gradually included the perspective of sexual and gender diversity, but they have been predominantly elaborated from North American and European perspectives. This book focuses on different understandings and practices developed by Latin American researchers that contribute to a broader application of psychological knowledge in LGBTQ+ studies, as well as sexual and gender diversity issues, but goes beyond the region by also incorporating chapters written by European and North American authors influenced by latinx perspectives. Latin American psychology has developed original approaches to LGBTQ+ studies based on a new theoretical critique to the mainstream psychological theories that has given rise to a new queer psychology. The chapters in this book showcase both theoretical contributions and empirical researches in this emerging field from six Latin American countries - Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica and Uruguay - as well as from Spain, the United States and Puerto Rico. Latinx Queer Psychology: Contributions to the Study of LGBTIQ+, Sexual and Gender Diversity Issues aims to contribute to the decolonization of psychological knowledge and practices addressing sexual and gender diversity issues, and to serve as a useful resource for social, community, clinical and educational psychologists working with research and practice involving LGBTIQ+ populations, as well as to social scientists in general interested in queer and gender studies. .
